BACKGROUND: Due to the colonization of tobacco plants by European settlers and the subsequent intensive marketing of commercial tobacco products to American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities in the United States, commercial cigarette smoking accounts for half of all deaths among AI/AN people. Limited awareness, access to treatment, and the absence of culturally relevant, effective smoking cessation interventions contribute to these high death rates.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to culturally adapt iCanQuit, a smartphone smoking cessation app proven efficacious for the general populat

American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) peoples experienced some of the highest rates of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) disease in the United States. However, there are limited data on COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness in this population. We performed a test-negative case‒control study using electronic health record data to evaluate the effectiveness of the original three FDA-authorised vaccines to prevent COVID-19-associated hospitalisations among AI/AN adults during 2021-2022. COVID-19 vaccines were effective in preventing COVID-19-associated hospitalisation, intensive care unit admission, m

OBJECTIVE: Alaska Native children may be at increased risk for dental caries because of added sugar intake from sugar-sweetened fruit drinks. This study describes development of a questionnaire to (a) assess Alaska Native caregivers' beliefs, knowledge, and behaviors regarding sugar-sweetened fruit drinks, and (b) describe behavior changes within a community-based intervention.
METHODS: Questionnaire development was conducted in three phases with Yup'ik Alaska Native caregivers in Southwest Alaska: (1) initial selection and adaptation of questionnaire items; (2) cognitive testing; and (3) dat

BACKGROUND: In the United States, racial and ethnic disparities in substance use treatment outcomes are persistent, especially among underrepresented minority (URM) populations. Technology-based interventions (TBIs) for substance use treatment show promise in reducing barriers to evidence-based treatment, yet no studies have described how TBIs may impact racial or ethnic health equity.
OBJECTIVE: This study explored whether TBIs in substance use treatment research promote health equity among people who identify as African American or Black, Hispanic or Latino, and American Indian or Alaska Na

OBJECTIVES: Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are the leading contributor of added sugars in the diets of children, adolescents, and young adults aged 2 to 19 years and are associated with chronic diseases, including oral health conditions such as dental caries. We assessed the possible association between the consumption of soda or sports drinks (SSDs), 2 types of SSBs, and past-year dentist visits among American Indian or Alaska Native (AI/AN) high school students because this population has unique challenges related to oral health (eg, barriers to access to care) that might increase SSD cons

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Annual lung cancer screening (LCS) with low-dose chest CT (LDCT) can prevent lung cancer deaths in individuals at high risk, and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) adults are among the highest risk populations; however, evidence suggests lower uptake of screening in this population compared to other groups.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of a culturally adapted patient navigation intervention delivered in Tribal healthcare clinics on LCS uptake in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) with assessment o

INTRODUCTION: American Indians and Alaska Natives (AIANs) are rich in culture, heritage, language, and resilience. Chronic underfunding, limited healthcare infrastructure, and barriers to quality health services contribute to some of the most severe health disparities in mental health and substance use disorders among AIAN populations.
METHODS: This formative evaluation aims to document the process and early implementation feedback on an Indigenous Peer Support Specialist Train-the-Trainer Manual (IPSSTTM) designed for use across Indigenous, community, clinical, and university settings. The c…

OBJECTIVE: Racial discrimination and racial identity may compete to influence incarceration risk. We estimated the predicted days incarcerated in a national US sample of Black, Latino/Latina, and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) individuals.
METHODS: We used the 2012-2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (n = 14,728) to identify individual incarceration history. We used zero-inflated Poisson regression to predict the number of days incarcerated across racial discrimination and racial identity scores.
RESULTS: Racial discrimination and identity varied b

Invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) disease is a serious bacterial infection that disproportionally affects American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations. Hib vaccination with a monovalent Hib conjugate vaccine consisting of Hib capsular polysaccharide (polyribosylribitol phosphate [PRP]) conjugated to outer membrane protein complex of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B, PRP-OMP (PedvaxHIB, Merck and Co., Inc.) has historically been preferred for AI/AN infants, who are at increased risk for invasive Hib disease, because it provides substantial protection after the first dose.

OBJECTIVES: The rate of drug overdose deaths in the USA has more than tripled since the turn of the century, and rates are disproportionately high among the American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) population. Little is known about the overall historical trends in AI/AN opioid-only and opioid/polysubstance-related mortality. This study will address this gap.
DESIGN: This is a retrospective longitudinal ecological study.
SETTING: US death records from 1999 to 2019 using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research.
PARTICIPANTS: US non-Hispa

BACKGROUND: Suicide among young people in Alaska Native (AN) communities was nearly unheard of through the establishment of statehood in 1959, but from 1960-1995, the suicide rate increased by approximately 500% during this period of rapid, imposed social transition. These disruptions increased conditions associated with suicide risk (e.g., substance use disorders, cultural disconnection), and challenged the community-level social safety net of youth protective factors. The purpose of this paper is to outline development and evaluation methodology for a comparative effectiveness trial of two v

Direct-acting antiviral (DAA) hepatitis C treatment can reduce fibrosis and prevent cirrhosis and its sequelae. This study aims to evaluate changes in fibrosis and lab measurements from pre-treatment to post-treatment and over time following the end-of-treatment among Alaska Native and American Indian (AN/AI) peoples treated with sofosbuvir-based DAAs between 2014 and 2023. Study participants were predominantly male (53.9%) with a mean age of 54.4 years at start of treatment. Among the 290 (61.3%) participants with at least one pre- and one post-treatment Liver Stiffness Measurement (LSM), pos

BACKGROUND: Although tobacco use has significantly declined in the general population, traditional tobacco use treatment uptake and success rates remain disproportionately low among people who identify as African American/Black, Hispanic/Latina/o, and American Indian/Alaska Native. Technology-based interventions (TBIs) for tobacco use are promising alternatives to traditional tobacco use treatments.
OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to investigate the extent to which the use of digital TBIs in tobacco use treatment research promotes health equity among people who identify as African America

BACKGROUND: Individuals identifying as Black, American Indian or Alaska Native, or Hispanic or Latino lack access to culturally appropriate accurate information and are the target of disinformation campaigns, which create doubt in science and health care providers and might play a role in sustaining health disparities related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to create and disseminate culturally and medically appropriate social media messages for Black, Latino, and American Indian or Alaska Native communities in Wisconsin and evaluate their reach and effectiveness in addres
