Alcohol expectancies among adolescents with conduct disorder: prediction and mediation of drinking.

Among adolescents with conduct disorder, alcohol expectancies were examined for both predictive utility and mediation of other predictors of alcohol use (i.e., delinquency, family history, demographic and psychopathology variables). Data were collected from 260 adolescents with conduct disorder 11-18 years of age, who had been in either mental health residential facilities or community-based special education programs for adolescents with serious emotional disturbances. Zero-order correlations and structural path models assessed relationships between expectancies, alcohol use, and other predic

Tomato juice, chocolate drink, and other fluids suppress volitional drinking of alcohol in the female Syrian golden hamster.

Although the hamster generally prefers alcohol at a level similar to that of the rat or mouse selectively bred to consume alcohol, the drinking hamster demonstrates neither physical dependence on alcohol nor elevated blood levels of alcohol, which are two typical criteria characterizing an animal model of alcoholism. The present investigation was designed to determine whether a third criterion of an animal model (i.e., consumption of high levels of alcohol in the presence of a palatable fluid, fulfilled by the P rat) would be met by the female Syrian golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus). A st

Regulation of Alcohol-Free and Low-Alcohol Drinks: Learning From a Comparative Analysis of Eight Countries.

INTRODUCTION: Governance of alcohol-free and low-alcohol (No/Lo) drinks has the potential to influence their public health impact. However, regulation remains poorly understood. This study aimed to identify, summarise and compare formal legal frameworks, non-binding government guidance and recognised self-regulatory frameworks for the labelling, taxation, licensing and condition of sale and marketing of No/Lo drinks across a diverse set of countries. METHODS: We conducted a desk-based analysis, supplemented by expert input. Eight case study countries (Australia, Finland, Germany, the Netherla

Characteristics of consumers of alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks in Great Britain: A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of alcohol-free and low-alcohol (no/lo) drinks on public health and health inequalities depends on who consumes them and how they are consumed. This study aimed to estimate: (i) the proportions of adults in Great Britain who consume no/lo drinks at different frequencies and in different settings; and (ii) the associations between no/lo drink consumption and individual characteristics. METHOD: Pooled data (N = 7691) from four waves of a repeat cross-sectional survey on alcohol use completed in 2022-2023 by adults (16+) resident in Great Britain were analysed using desc

Alcohol drinking is reduced by a mu 1- but not by a delta-opioid receptor antagonist in alcohol-preferring rats.

To assess the roles of opioid receptor subtypes in voluntary alcohol drinking, alcohol-preferring AA (Alko, Alcohol) rats, non-deprived of food or water, were used in a paradigm where access to 10% alcohol solution was limited to 1-4-h sessions on every 2nd working day. The delta-opioid receptor antagonist naltrindole (1-5 mg/kg i.p. 15 min before the session) had no effect on alcohol drinking, while it attenuated the delta-opioid receptor agonist [D-Pen2, D-Pen5]enkephalin-induced locomotor stimulation. The mu1-opioid receptor antagonist naloxonazine (1-15 mg/kg i.p. 20 h before the session),

Changes in Drinking Motives Do Not Mediate Reductions in Alcohol Use and Consequences Following a Brief Alcohol Intervention.

OBJECTIVE: College students endorse risky alcohol use and experience a variety of consequences. When students violate campus policies, universities often mandate delivery of brief alcohol interventions. One approach to enhancing the efficacy of interventions is the inclusion of a self-affirmation task. Prior research suggests that a stronger sense of self may reduce reliance on maladaptive motives. The present study sought to understand the impact of an enhanced brief alcohol intervention on drinking motives and their role as a mechanism of behavior change. METHOD: Participants (N = 463; 58%

Strong concordance and correlation between direct alcohol biomarkers and alcohol self-report among youth with variable drinking patterns.

BACKGROUND: Heavy drinking among adolescents is associated with various consequences but is often undetected, limiting early intervention. Self-report of alcohol use has strengths but can be inaccurate due to recall biases and underreporting. Objective biomarkers may improve detection of drinking and related consequences, but few adolescent studies have assessed biomarker concordance with subjective self-report. METHODS: Youth aged 15-19 (54 % female) with minimal (n = 22) or heavy (n = 56) drinking patterns attended two research-related visits, approximately 13 days apart. Biospecimens were

Drinking Motives and Alcohol Consumption Among Asian American Young Adults: The Moderating Role of Alcohol-Related Facial Flushing.

BACKGROUND: Despite guidelines recommending lower alcohol limits for individuals who flush, some still drink at unhealthy levels. This study investigates whether drinking motives are differentially associated with alcohol consumption based on self-reported flushing status among U.S. Asian young adults. Asian American youth report alcohol use at rates comparable to other high-risk groups, identifying the need to understand factors shaping these behaviors. METHODS: The current analysis drew participants from a longitudinal multi-cohort study examining the emotional and behavioral health of coll

Cross-country comparison of proportion of alcohol consumed in harmful drinking occasions using the International Alcohol Control Study.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: This study examines the proportion of alcohol markets consumed in harmful drinking occasions in a range of high-, middle-income countries and assesses the implications of these findings for conflict of interest between alcohol producers and public health and the appropriate role of the alcohol industry in alcohol policy space. DESIGN AND METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys were conducted in 10 countries as part of the International Alcohol Control study. Alcohol consumption was measured using location- and beverage-specific measures. A level of consumption defined as harmf

Higher pretreatment blood pressure is associated with greater alcohol drinking reduction in alcohol-dependent individuals treated with doxazosin.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical and clinical research suggest that the α1 receptor antagonist prazosin reduces alcohol consumption. Furthermore, clinical studies indicate a role for prazosin in treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms and a recent trial suggested that pre-treatment blood pressure (BP) predicts therapeutic response for prazosin in PTSD patients. Whether pre-treatment BP may predict response to α1 blockers in alcohol-dependent (AD) patients is unknown. We previously reported a randomized controlled trial (RCT) where doxazosin, an α1 receptor antagonist with a more favorab

Subjective intoxication in response to alcohol challenge: heritability and covariation with personality, breath alcohol level, and drinking history.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have identified differences in subjective response to alcohol in subjects differentiated by family history of alcoholism. Results suggest that genetic influences on individual variation in subjective response to alcohol may be a mechanism for genetic effects on alcohol problems. However, direct evidence for genetic effects on subjective response to alcohol is very limited. METHODS: In a sample of 99 adult twin pairs, we studied genetic influences on subjective intoxication after alcohol challenge. The twins ingested a standard dose of ethanol (0.70 g/kg for men/0.

A national assessment of on-premise drinking establishments near public universities: Drink prices, drink specials, indoor tobacco use, and state-level alcohol laws.

BACKGROUND: Inexpensive drinks and price promotions increase alcohol consumption and have been observed at on-premise drinking establishments near large colleges. Some bars may sell tobacco products and allow indoor tobacco use to encourage patrons to stay and drink more. This study examined drink prices/specials and associated practices of on-premise drinking establishments including tobacco sales and policies regarding tobacco use. METHODS: In 2018, telephone calls about prices/practices were made to 403 randomly selected bars/nightclubs within 2 miles of large residential universities in e

Alcohol motivations associated with frequency of alcohol use, binge drinking, and alcohol problems among active duty junior enlisted soldiers and non-commissioned officers.

Problematic alcohol use is a serious threat to the behavioral health of active-duty Service Members (ADSM), resulting in numerous calls from governmental agencies to better understand mechanistic factors contributing to alcohol misuse within the military. Alcohol use motives are reliable predictors of alcohol-related behaviors and are considered malleable targets for prevention and intervention efforts. However, empirical research indicates that drinking motives vary across contextually distinct populations. Although some research has been conducted among veteran and reservist populations, lim

Blood glucose level, alcohol heavy drinking, and alcohol craving during treatment for alcohol dependence: results from the Combined Pharmacotherapies and Behavioral Interventions for Alcohol Dependence (COMBINE) Study.

BACKGROUND: Heavy drinking may increase blood glucose levels. Moreover, in alcohol-dependent subjects, glucose may play a putative role in alcohol preference. METHODS: This study investigated the relationship between blood glucose levels and both alcohol heavy drinking and craving in alcohol-dependent subjects participating in the COMBINE Study. The primary objective was to evaluate the relationship between baseline (pretreatment) glucose levels and percentage of heavy drinking day (PHDD) during treatment. The secondary objective was to evaluate the relationship between glucose levels, baseli

A Cognitive Model of Alcohol Use Among Taiwanese Adolescents: The Influence of Alcohol Expectancies and Drinking Refusal Self-Efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Drinking alcohol of adolescents is an important issue in Taiwan. The purpose of the research is to determine how drinking expectancy and drinking refusal self-efficacy influence drinking behavior among Taiwanese adolescents based on a cognitive model of alcohol consumption. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 908 students, selected from 10th to 12th grade of six high schools in Taiwan, were stratified randomly. Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationships among drinking expectancy, refusal self-efficacy, and alcoh

Targeting G9a decreases escalated alcohol drinking in male mice in a model of combined stress and chronic alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a pervasive problem in society afflicting millions of people worldwide. One reason for the prevalence of AUD is that heavy alcohol drinking can produce alcohol dependence. In addition, alcohol dependence dysregulates the body's stress systems to increase alcohol drinking. Therefore, targeting dependence- and/or stress-related alcohol drinking clinically could reduce heavy drinking in patients with AUD. One key mechanism thought to contribute to behaviors associated with AUD is long-lasting epigenetic alterations of gene expression. We recently showed t

Neural Correlates of Stress and Alcohol Cue-Induced Alcohol Craving and of Future Heavy Drinking: Evidence of Sex Differences.

OBJECTIVE: Stress and alcohol cue reactivity are associated with poor treatment outcomes in alcohol use disorder (AUD), but sex-specific neural correlates of stress and alcohol cue-induced craving compared with neutral cue-induced craving and of heavy drinking outcomes in AUD have not been examined. Thus, this study prospectively examined these associations and assessed sex differences. METHODS: Treatment-seeking adults with AUD (N=77; 46 men and 31 women) completed a functional MRI task involving stress, alcohol, and neutral cue exposure with repeated assessments of alcohol craving. Association between alcohol-cue modulated startle reactions and drinking behaviour in alcohol dependent patients - results of the PREDICT study.

Previous research on alcohol dependent patients has shown that variations in eyeblink startle response can be used as an indicator of their emotional responses to alcohol-related stimuli. Postulating that reactions on substance associated stimuli are controlled by either a negative or a positive affective processing system, we expect that abstinent alcoholics react differently (within-group) in the emotional evaluation of alcohol cues. Furthermore, we assumed the startle response to covary with medication response to acamprosate and naltrexone. We measured 74 detoxified inpatients' acoustic st
