A novel strategy for the difunctionalization of electron-deficient alkenes with aryl sulfonium salts to access remote sulfur-containing oxindole derivatives by using in situ-formed copper(I)-based complexes as a photoredox catalyst is presented. This method enables the generation of the C(sp3)-centered radicals through site selective cleavage of the C-S bond of aryl sulfonium salts under mild conditions. Moreover, the oxidation reactions of desired products provide a new strategy for the preparation of sulfoxide or sulfone-containing compounds. Importantly, this approach can be easily applied …

Metal radicals have shown versatile reactivity in modern synthetic chemistry. However, the use of zinc radicals for molecular synthesis has been barely explored. Here, we show that a transient zinc radical can be formed through photoactivation of a zinc-zinc bonded compound, which is able to mediate the selective dimerization of alkenes and allenes. Treatment of dizinc compounds [L2Zn2] [L = CH3C(2,6-iPr2C6H3N)CHC(CH3)(NCH2CH2PR2); R = Ph (LPh) or iPr (LiPr)] with a diverse array of aromatic alkenes under UV irradiation (365 nm) facilely afforded the head-to-head coupling products, i.e., 1,4-d…

A novel catalytic system for radical cross-coupling reactions based on copper and chiral Pyridyl-bis(imidazole) (PyBim) ligands is described. It overcomes the challenges of chemoselectivity and enantioselectivity, achieving a highly enantioselective vicinal sulfonyl-esterification reaction of alkenes involving sulfur dioxide. This strategy involves the use of earth-abundant metal catalyst, mild reaction conditions, a broad range of substrates (84 examples), high yields (up to 97% yield), and exceptional control over enantioselectivity. The reaction system is compatible with different types of …

Direct and site-selective C-H functionalization of alkenes under environmentally benign conditions represents a useful and attractive yet challenging transformation to access value-added molecules. Herein, a unified protocol for a variety of intermolecular Heck-type functionalizations of Csp2-H bond of alkenes has been developed by thianthrenation. The reaction features metal-free and operationally simple conditions for exclusive cine-selective C-H functionalization of aliphatic and aryl alkenes to forge C-C, C-N, C-P, and C-S bonds at room temperature, providing a general protocol for intermo…

Despite the current progress achieved in asymmetric hydroacylations, highly enantioselective catalytic addition of unfunctionalized aldehydes to internal alkenes remains an unsolved challenge. Here, using a coordination-assisted strategy, we developed a rhodium-catalyzed regio- and enantioselective addition of unfunctionalized aldehydes to internal alkenes such as enamides and β,γ-unsaturated amides. Valuable α-amino ketones and 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds were directly obtained with high enantioselectivity from readily available materials.

A photoinduced, copper-catalyzed three-component radical cross-coupling of cycloketone oxime esters, alkenes, and terminal alkynes is described for the first time. Key to the success of this process was the integration of photoinduced iminyl radical-mediated C-C bond cleavage with the conceptual simplicity of copper-catalyzed radical cross-coupling. This protocol provides access to cyanoalkyl-containing propargylic compounds in good yields.

A novel copper-catalyzed intermolecular trifluoromethylarylation of alkenes is developed using less active ether-type Togni's reagent under mild reaction conditions. Various alkenes and diverse arylboronic acids are compatible with these conditions. Preliminary mechanistic studies reveal that a mutual activation process between arylboronic acid and CF3(+) reagent is essential. In addition, the reaction might involve a rate-determining transmetalation, and the final aryl C-C bond is derived from reductive elimination of the aryl(alkyl)Cu(III) intermediate.

The C-H bonds of carboranes display acidity and can be functionalized under stoichiometric amounts of strong bases. However, the harsh reaction conditions lead to poor functional-group compatibility and cumbersome reaction handling. Herein, we achieved intramolecular C-H bond addition of o-carboranes to nitriles, unactivated alkynes, and alkenes using a catalytic alkoxide-mediated protocol for nitriles and a silylamide-promoted protocol for alkynes and alkenes at room temperature. Through this method, we synthesized a series of carborane-fused five- and six-membered compounds. Further deborona…

The regioselective 1,n-difunctionalization of unactivated alkenes at remote positions is challenging due to the lack of a driving force to arrest chain walking at specific positions. Herein, we describe an alternative mechanistic approach that harnesses irreversible termination of chain walking to control regioselectivity. Mechanistic studies provide insight into key chain walking and deamination steps. The transformation broadly tolerates nitrogenous leaving groups, aryl coupling partners, and linear and cyclic alkenes to generate 1,n-difunctionalized products.

Catalytic C─H alkylation of pyrazoles with internal alkenes represents an ideal strategy for constructing functionalized pyrazoles. However, such a transformation has remained underexplored to date, likely due to the inherently low reactivity of internal alkenes and the lack of suitable catalysts. In this study, we describe a lanthanum-catalyzed highly regioselective C─H alkylation of N-aryl pyrazoles with internal alkenes. The key to success of this unprecedented transformation is the use of a cationic imidazolin-2-iminato lanthanum catalyst, whose large ionic radius and less steric hindrance…

Xantphos-type ligands enabled the highly linear-selective hydroformylation of allyl alcohol and related alkenes under mild conditions with RhH(CO)(PPh3)3. The product, 4-hydroxybutanal, is widely used as an industrial solvent and polymer precursor, and serves as an industrial intermediate in the production of 1,4-butanediol, γ-butyrolactone, and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. Six ligands with different combinations of the Xantphos backbone and substituents on the benzene ring were compared. A 3,5-xylyl-substituted ligand displayed particularly high regioselectivity toward linear products. Density fun…

The present study details a metal-free catalytic Minisci carbonylation reaction, founded upon a radical polarity reversal strategy. The reaction under scrutiny involves the reaction of an electrophilic trifluoromethyl radical with an electron-rich alkene to generate a nucleophilic alkyl radical, which then undergoes a Minisci carbonylation transformation with various electron-deficient N-heteroarenes under a carbon monoxide atmosphere. This method has been demonstrated to be both universal and efficient in the synthesis of trifluoromethyl-substituted N-heteroaryl ketones. The experimental resu

The CF2H group constitutes a valuable structural motif in medicinal chemistry. Herein, we report an efficient light-induced palladium-catalyzed cross-dimerization of electron-deficient gem-difluoroalkenes with styrene derivatives, enabling hydroalkenylation and hydroalkylation reactions to access diverse α-difluoromethyl products. The photoenhanced hydricity of PdH species facilitates efficient insertion into gem-difluoroalkenes for the generation of α-difluoromethyl palladium species. This palladium intermediate subsequently undergoes alkyl Heck reaction with readily available alkenes without…

Our developed C2-symmetric SPINOL-derived phosphine (NUSIOC-Phos) was first applied in transition metal catalysis as one novel chiral monodentate ligand, enabling the palladium-catalyzed enantioselective arylvinylation of N-allyl-o-iodobenzamides with N-tosylhydrazones. This protocol employed readily accessible starting materials and exhibited broad substrate scope, affording chiral 3,4-dihydroisoquinolinones bearing all-carbon quaternary stereogenic centers in good yields with excellent enantioselectivities. Visible-light photoredox catalyzed 1,2-arylalkylation of alkenes with quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones and malonic esters has been developed through direct C(sp2)-H/C(sp3)-H functionalization under mild conditions. A number of quinoxalin-2(1H)-one containing esters could be obtained in moderate to good yields in a step and atom-economic manner. This transformation proceeded through a radical process, which features the advantages of mild conditions, a clean energy source, a wide substrate scope, and favorable functional group compatibility.

An efficient Brønsted acid-assisted Lewis acid-mediated synthesis of indolines and pyrrolidines has been achieved from α-hydroxydimethylacetals and suitable electrophile-tethered amines. The reaction proceeds via an interrupted Amadori/Heyns rearrangement, where the key aminoenol intermediate was successfully trapped with Michael acceptors and ketones in an intramolecular fashion to afford corresponding derivatives in good yield and diastereoselectivity. The reaction is operationally simple, general, and tolerates various functional groups.

A Pd-catalyzed asymmetric isomerization-hydroamidocarbonylation of amide-containing alkenes was developed, affording a variety of chiral α-alkyl succinimides in moderate to good yields with high enantioselectivities. The key to success was introducing bulky 1-adamentyl P-substitution and 2,3,5,6-tetramethoxyphenyl group into the rigid P-chirogenic bisphosphine ligand to create stronger steric hinderance and deeper catalytic pocket. By this approach, regio- or stereo-convergent synthesis of enantiomeric succinimides from the mixture of olefin isomers was achieved.

Catalytic methods to couple alcohol and alkene feedstocks are highly valuable in synthetic chemistry. The direct oxidative coupling of primary alcohols and alkenes offers a streamlined approach to ketone synthesis. Currently, available methods are based on transition metal-catalyzed alkene hydroacylation, which involves the generation of an electrophilic aldehyde intermediate from primary alcohol dehydrogenation. These methods generally require high reaction temperatures and a high loading of precious metal catalysts and are predominantly effective for branch-selective reactions with electron-…

The employment of dinuclear Au(I) catalysts in photomediated modern organic transformations has attracted significant attention over the past decade, which commonly demonstrates unique catalytic performance compared with the corresponding mononuclear gold complexes. Nevertheless, detailed mechanisms of dinuclear gold catalysis remain ambiguous, and further mechanistic understanding is highly desirable. Herein, computational studies were carried out to gain mechanistic insights into the photoinduced dinuclear gold-catalyzed divergent dechloroalkylation of gem-dichloroalkanes. Computational resu
