HLA in alopecia areata.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) characteristics of Turkish alopecia areata patients, and the correlation of the HLA profile with age of onset, severity and duration of the disease, presence of ophiasis, and family history. METHODS: A total of 88 patients with alopecia areata, alopecia totalis, or alopecia universalis were compared with 100 healthy controls. HLA typing was performed by the Terasaki microlymphocytotoxicity method. RESULTS: The frequency of HLA-A1, HLA-B62(15), HLA-DQ1, and HLA-DQ3 was significantly higher in patients than …

[Thymopentin in alopecia areata].

Alopecia areata is a common cause of hair loss which leads to localized bald areas predominantly on the scalp. Etiological factors are not clear yet, but it is generally considered as a consequence of an autoimmune process. Histological findings revealed perifollicular infiltration of T-cells and antigen-presenting cells. Autoreactive T-cells are reported to amplify this abnormality by interacting with follicular epithelium. There is no effective treatment available at the moment. We report on a 53-year old climacteric woman who developed a bald lesion on her scalp spontaneously in november 19…

Treatment of alopecia areata.

Some individuals question whether any treatment is effective in severe alopecia areata. Certainly many patients, especially those with mild disease, experience spontaneous hair regrowth; however, results of double-blind studies clearly indicate that some treatments do promote hair regrowth even in those with extensive disease. Some patients never show either spontaneous or treatment-related hair regrowth; others experience hair regrowth only while maintained on treatment, repeatedly losing hair within a few weeks of discontinuing treatment and regrowing it within several weeks after restarting…

[Postmenopausal frontal fibrosing alopecia].

We report on two patients with postmenopausal frontal fibrosing alopecia. This recently described disease affects postmenopausal women and is characterized by progressive recession of the frontotemporal and parietal hair margins. It leads to a symmetrical band-like scarring area of alopecia 3-6 cm wide. Histological examination shows perifollicular fibrosis and lymphocytic inflammation concentrated around the isthmus and infundibular areas of the follicles. One of our two patients also had vulvar lichen sclerosus et atrophicus. An effective treatment for this type of postmenopausal alopecia is…

Pseudopelade: an inherited alopecia.

BACKGROUND: Pseudopelade is a rare idiopathic progressive alopecia that has no initial inflammatory phase. Even so, pseudopelade has been classified as scarring alopecia with postinflammatory alopecias. Atrophy rather than true scarring is the cardinal feature of pseudopelade. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of reported cases of pseudopelade, especially those with a family history, was undertaken. The discovery of a young man and his mother, who had pseudopelade, plus two other familial cases prompted this study. RESULTS: Examination of the clinical and pathologic material shows pseudopelade…

Alopecia areata in childhood.

Aproximately 1% of the population will have had alopecia areata by the age of 50 and the peak incidence occurs in children and young adults. All body hair may be affected including lashes and brows. Alopecia areata is a systemic disease with frequent involvement of nails or eyes. Alopecia areata has been associated with atopic dermatitis, autoimmune disease, vitiligo, and endocrine disease. The pathogenesis is unclear. There is no excellent therapy for alopecia areata although many interventions are tried. Immunotherapy with diphenylcyprone is currently being optimistically evaluated. The harm…

Focal and generalized alopecia.

Focal or generalized alopecia is defined as hair loss affecting the ventral, lateral, perineal, and dorsal aspects of the trunk of the cat, usually in a symmetric pattern. This may be attributable to failure of hair coat production, excess loss of hair due to self trauma, or excess shedding of whole hairs. Self trauma is the most common cause of hair loss and is associated particularly with flea allergy dermatitis. Other causes of hair loss are reviewed.

Alopecia/mental retardation syndrome.

We report on an African-American patient with alopecia universalis, microcephaly, hypogonadism, and mental and growth retardation, and compare his phenotype to others with recessive alopecia/mental retardation syndromes in the literature. Our patient represents the first case reported from nonconsanguineous African-American parents.

Chemically induced cosmetic alopecia.

Cosmetic causes of scarring alopecia are poorly documented. They include traction alopecia and hot-combing. Recently, another group has presented in the South London area, related to misuse of chemical hair straightening agents. Affected patients are young, female, of Afro-Caribbean origin, and typically display hair loss on the vertex of the scalp. Histology shows a pattern of fibrosis and inflammation characteristic of the physical damage seen with other cosmetic procedures. This histological pattern is distinguishable from other non-cosmetic causes of scarring alopecia.

Investigating drug induced alopecia.

The propensity of cytotoxic drugs to cause alopecia is well known, but nurses are perhaps less aware of the capacity of other drug groups to cause this unwanted side-effect. Increasing nurses' awareness of the actions of these drugs will enable the association between alopecia and toxicity to be recognised at an early stage, before the distressing effects of drug-induced alopecia develop.

[Alopecia areata in children].

Alopecia areata is a hair disease of unknown origin characterized by the sudden appearance of one or more bald patches. This disorder may develop in adults as well as in children. In childhood there is often an association with atopy. Most investigators feel that alopecia areata is an auto-immune phenomenon with heterogeneous aetiology. This article deals with hypotheses for the development of alopecia areata stressing also the psychosomatic aspects. Different therapy modalities have been propagated in alopecia areata, though complete satisfactory effects have been achieved by none. In childho…
