Comparison of transvestism in Australia and America.

Information concerning gender identity, sexual orientation, cross-dressing behavior, fetishism, and bondage was obtained from a questionnaire which was posted to members of two transvestite clubs, one in the United States and one in Australia. This study reports the responses of 136 American and 86 Australian self-designated transvestites who reported a period of fetishism to women's clothes at some stage of development. Characteristics of transvestism of subjects in both countries were remarkably similar; all were male, almost half the subjects first cross-dressed in prepuberty, and in the la

Gastrointestinal pathology in South America.

Non-neoplastic gastrointestinal disease in South America is largely related to environmental conditions. Parasitic disorders, including Chagas' disease with megacolon, predominate in endemic regions. Common enteritides of various etiologie are frequent, whereas appendicits, diverticulosis of the colon, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are extremely rare. There was no appendicitis in native Indians of Paraguay.

Temporal trends in congenital syphilis incidence per 1000 live births in the Americas.

Congenital syphilis (CS) is a significant infectious condition associated with a high social and economic burden. In the Americas, the epidemiological situation remains concerning, with varying patterns across countries. Our study evaluated temporal trends in CS incidence per 1000 live births in countries across the Americas between 2009 and 2021. An ecological study was conducted using data from the Pan American Health Organization and analyzed via the Joinpoint Regression Program and Project R. Sixteen countries were included, showing an average annual increase of 6.42% in CS incidence. Cana…

Pandemic Preparedness: Analyzing National Plans for Respiratory Pathogen Pandemics in the Americas Region.

BACKGROUND: To identify gaps and define priority actions to strengthen national pandemic preparedness and response plans, we assessed the concordance between national plans for respiratory pathogens against the World Health Organization (WHO) pandemic checklist and the States Parties Annual Report (SPAR) in the Americas. METHODS: In this retrospective, semiquantitative study, we reviewed the most recent respiratory pandemic plans for 35 Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) member states and assessed their concordance with (1) actionable guidelines in WHO pandemic checklist and (2) Internat…

Substance Use During the COVID-19 Pandemic in the Americas: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, substance use in the Americas was influenced by various factors, including social isolation, increased stress, and disruption of healthcare services. While the impacts varied across populations, the health crisis exacerbated challenges related to substance use, particularly in more vulnerable groups. This article aims to describe the pandemic's impact on substance use and substance use disorders in the Americas region. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review across 4 databases (Pubmed, Scielo, Lilacs, and Google Scholar) using a search paradigm based o…

Distribution and Primate Hosts of the Bot Fly Cuterebra baeri Across the Americas.

Species distributions are influenced by evolutionary history and interactions with biotic and abiotic factors, thereby providing crucial insights into ecological interactions. However, despite their ecological significance, parasite distribution maps remain scarce. This study investigated the distribution of Cuterebra baeri, a primate-specific ectoparasite, through comprehensive systematic literature review and analysis of data from iNaturalist. Cuterebra baeri was documented in primates ranging from southern Mexico to southern Brazil, including the initial documentation from Guatemala. Four p

Health workers as hate crimes targets during COVID-19 outbreak in the Americas.

Many health workers in the Americas, especially women, have been victims of discrimination and different types of grievances during the COVID-19 pandemic. These brief reflections aim to make the problem visible, offer theoretical explanations and some recommendations. The pandemic constitutes a massive crisis that triggers fears and reassuring of diffuse anxieties, which often includes someone to blame. Progress towards a comprehensive approach to maternal and neonatal immunization in the Americas.

Maternal and neonatal immunization (MNI) is a core component of the new immunization model in the Americas, which transitioned from immunization of children to that of the entire family. Immunization during pregnancy protects the mother and the fetus by providing the neonate with maternal antibodies against disease. It has the potential to impact early childhood morbidity and mortality, and thus MNI has gained visibility and priority on the global health agenda. The Region of the Americas is a leader in MNI, as seen by its elimination of congenital rubella syndrome in 2015 and the progress mad…
