Transient global amnesia triggered by mild head injury.

An episode of transient global memory loss was observed in a 27-year-old woman following a mild head injury in a car accident. Her clinical and neuropsychological profiles were indistinguishable from those of transient global amnesia (TGA). This paper argues that a cause-effect relationship may be postulated between head trauma and transient memory loss, perhaps as the result of a very stressful situation such as a car crash.

Emotional arousal and phobia in transient global amnesia.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of emotionally stressful or phobogenic events and phobic personality traits in transient global amnesia (TGA). DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: Tertiary care center. PATIENTS: Fifty-one case patients with TGA (mean +/- SD age, 62.7 +/- 6.7 years) compared with 51 control patients with transient ischemic attacks (mean +/- SD age, 63.8 +/- 6.7 years). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Precipitant factors, life events, and phobic attitudes. RESULTS: Of the 25 TGA attacks that were triggered by a precipitant, 11 were possibly related to emotionally stressful or phobog

Long-term perceptual priming in transient global amnesia.

This paper addresses the question as to whether long-term perceptual priming can occur during transient global amnesia. A patient who displayed the classical features of transient global amnesia was assessed during the episode and again 7 days later. During the episode, she was administered a task that required the perceptual identification of fragmented pictures over a number of learning trials. Seven days later, after recovery from the episode, she was required to identify the same fragmented pictures together with a new set of pictures that she had never seen before. She was significantly b

Hemorrhagic pituitary adenoma manifesting as transient global amnesia.

A 68-year-old female presented with recurrent transient global amnesia due to hemorrhagic prolactin-producing pituitary adenoma. Magnetic resonance imaging clearly revealed the anatomical relationship between the hematoma, within the parasellar tumor, and the compressed medial temporal lobe of the right (non-dominant) hemisphere. Within 4 weeks after the start of bromocriptin administration, the adenoma had markedly regressed and the affected temporal lobe was decompressed. She has experienced no further episode of transient global amnesia. Magnetic resonance imaging is recommended to detect l

Acute confusional migraine: variant of transient global amnesia.

Acute confusional migraine in children and transient global amnesia in adults share a number of similar clinical manifestations. Acute confusional migraine in 6 children (mean age: 11.7 years; range: 7.5-17 years) was characterized by transient episodes of amnesia and acute confusion lasting 1-12 hours. Episodes were preceded by headache and vomiting in 4 patients. In 2 patients acute confusional migraine was the initial symptom. A history of preceding trivial head injury was reported in 3 patients and migraine in 4. Urine and serum drug screens were negative. Cerebral imaging studies and inte

Reduction of visual P300 during transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a syndrome of selective loss of recent memory without other neurological deficits. Auditory and visual P300s were recorded during and after TGA to investigate the contribution of the short-term memory system to P300 generation. The auditory P300 during TGA was comparable to that recorded 1 week and 9 months after TGA. In contrast to the auditory modality, the visual target P300 was reduced in amplitude during TGA and at 1 week after the attack. The P300 to novel visual stimuli was also reduced during TGA. Both target and novelty visual P300 recovered by 9 mont

Transient global amnesia after cerebral angiography with iohexol.

Transient global amnesia is an unusual neurologic phenomenon that occasionally occurs after angiography, usually of the cerebral vessels. It represents a benign event, and normal function is ultimately restored, but the amnesia may be frightening for both the patient and the physician until its nature is recognized. The authors describe two cases of transient global amnesia occurring after cerebral angiography with iohexol, outline the criteria for the diagnosis and discuss the proposed mechanism of the phenomenon.

[Basilar artery migraine associated with transient global amnesia].

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is an unusual form of the amnestic syndrome, clinically characterized by profound disturbance of short-term memory with preservation of immediate recall and long-term memory. Spontaneous recovery is the rule and is usually complete within several hours. The etiology of TGA is not clear. It is considered to be caused by transient ischemia confined to the medial temporal lobe, an area supplied by branches of the vertebrobasilar system. Basilar artery migraine is a well-known syndrome, first described by Bickerstaff. Besides pulsating headache, the dominant symptoms

The P3 evoked potential and transient global amnesia.

The P3 evoked potential has been linked to memory mechanisms, but its neuronal generators are uncertain. Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a disorder of recent memory that has been postulated to result from ischemia or focal seizures in the medial temporal lobes and/or thalamus. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a recording of P3 evoked potential and sphenoidal electroencephalogram during TGA. The tonal P3 was not decremented in comparison to P3 recordings one month and two years after recovery. Sphenoidal electroencephalogram was normal. The results suggest that the neuronal netwo

42 consecutive cases of transient global amnesia are briefly analysed. The relationship with migraine seems more impressive than the importance of cerebrovascular risk factors.

A neuropsychological follow-up was made in a group of patients affected by transient global amnesia (TGA). The results suggest that TGA could leave some attentional and mnesic "fragility".

The transient global amnesia-migraine connection. Case report.

Transient global amnesia is described in two patients suffering from classical and common migraine, respectively. These cases are peculiar in that the amnesic attack was part of the aura in one patient, while it behaved like an accompanying symptom in the other. The close temporal relation between the attacks of transient global amnesia and migraine strengthens the hypothesis of an etiologic role of migraine. The nature of this mechanism could be the cerebral blood flow changes or the neural perturbation which characterize migraine attacks.

Transient global amnesia. Precipitating activities and other observations.

Impressed with the number of patients whose spells of transient global amnesia were triggered by special circumstances, I have reviewed 78 such cases. Precipitating events were reported in 26 of 85 spells: eight occurred during highly emotional experiences; seven, during sexual intercourse; six, while the patient was in pain; two, while a trigeminal ganglion was being stimulated; and three, during a dip in the cold Atlantic Ocean. These observations suggest an electrophysiologic disturbance. The characteristics of the amnesia, the organization of memory, and behavior during spells were also co

Transient memory impairment and transient global amnesia induced by photodynamic therapy.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a commonly used and effective treatment option for nonmelanoma skin cancer. Apart from local side-effects such as pain, oedema and erythema, no major adverse events occur in the majority of cases. Here we report on five patients who developed memory deficits such as transient global amnesia immediately after PDT for actinic keratosis. All PDT treatments were performed according to standard therapy protocols. The reported patients had a memory gap for the entire procedure, as well as for the consecutive emergency medical care. Other common neurological causes such
