One of the major routes of transmission of rickettsial and ehrlichial diseases is via ticks that infest numerous host species, including humans. Besides mammals, reptiles and amphibians also carry ticks that may harbor Rickettsia and Ehrlichia strains that are pathogenic to humans. Furthermore, reptiles and amphibians are exempt from quarantine in Japan, thus facilitating the entry of parasites and pathogens to the country through import. Accordingly, in the current study, we examined the presence of Rickettsia and Ehrlichia spp. genes in ticks associated with reptiles and amphibians originati…

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is a pervasive environmental stressor, yet its effects are often assessed without considering ontogeny, cross-group variation, or interactions between spectral composition and illuminance. The transition to LED lighting makes this issue increasingly relevant. Amphibians may be vulnerable because many species rely on natural light cycles and undergo habitat transitions during development. We tested direct and carryover effects of ecologically realistic LED light in crested newts (Triturus macedonicus, T. ivanbureschi) and reciprocal hybrids. Larvae were exposed …

A key outcome of the Global Biodiversity Crisis is the contraction and range shift of species distribution into refugial habitats that afford protection against threatening processes. Range contractions driven by spatially overlapping threats may fragment populations to the point where functional habitat is lost. This study identifies a range contraction of the Vulnerable green and golden bell frog (Ranoidea aurea) in south-east Australia using a multi-method approach. We fitted alpha hulls, species distribution models (MaxEnt, Random Forest, Boosted Regression Trees and an AUC-weighted ensemb

Mast cells are tissue-resident granulocytes that are often viewed through a negative lens due to their roles in allergies and hypersensitivity. While central to these conditions, mast cells have broader roles in vertebrate immune systems that are often overlooked. Whereas most mast cell research to date has been conducted in mammalian models, mast-like cells are found across vertebrates, presumably with conserved and divergent functions in disparate immune systems. Our past studies defined a role of amphibian (Xenopus laevis) mast cells in skin antifungal defenses but stopped short of function

Why parasites occur in certain hosts in certain locations has been a long-standing question among ecological and evolutionary parasitologist … nuran species within the local community. Parasites included complex-life cycle trematodes that use amphibians as definitive hosts (Haematoloechus spp., Glypthelmins quieta) or as intermediate hosts (Alaria sp., Neodiplostomum sp., echinostomatids, and Lechriorchis) and nematodes with direct or indirect life cycles (Cosmocercoides and Oswaldocruzia). Trematode infection of the second intermediate hosts can lead to changes in their fitness and, as a result, a change in the invasion rate of … osts for many trematode species. Herein, we focused on trematodes spectra from planorbid snails and amphibians from the anomaly P hosts with the aim to undetected interactions between the pathways of parasites. Emerging cercariae of 6802 planorbid snails of dominant species (Planorbarius corneus, Planorbis planorbis, and Anisus spp.) were detected by both mo …

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, amphibian populations are declining drastically. One reason might be the use of pesticides including herbicides. The herbicide glyphosate is an inhibitor of the 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate (EPSP) synthase of the plant shikimate pathway, preventing the formation of aromatic amino acids and thus inducing plant death. Due to this specific action, GBH are considered nontoxic to non-target organisms. However, GBH impairs embryonic development of chickens, amphibians and fishes. So far, no detailed tissue- and organ-specific analysis of the effects of GBH during develop…

Although the application potential of amphibian skin-derived active peptides in alleviating ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced damage has attracted increasing attention, research remains in its infancy. In this study, a new peptide (OM-GL15, GLLSGHYGRASPVAC) was identified from the skin of the green odorous frog (Odorrana margaretae). Results showed that OM-GL15 scavenged free radicals (2,2'-diazo-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid and 1,1-diphenyl-2-trinitrophenylhydrazine) and reduced Fe3+ to Fe2+. Moreover, topical administration of OM-GL15 significantly alleviated UVB-induced skin photoda

Rift Valley fever phlebovirus (RVFV) is a zoonotic arthropod-borne virus, which has led to devastating epidemics in African countries and on the Arabian Peninsula. Results of in-vivo, in-vitro and field studies suggested that amphibians and reptiles may play a role as reservoir hosts of RVFV, promoting its maintenance during inter-epidemic periods. To elucidate this hypothesis, we examined two newly established reptile-derived cell lines (Egyptian cobra and Chinese pond turtle) and five previously generated reptile- and amphibian-derived cell lines for their replicative capacity for three low-…

Lambert et al question our retrospective and holistic epidemiological assessment of the role of chytridiomycosis in amphibian declines. Their alternative assessment is narrow and provides an incomplete evaluation of evidence. Adopting this approach limits understanding of infectious disease impacts and hampers conservation efforts. We reaffirm that our study provides unambiguous evidence that chytridiomycosis has affected at least 501 amphibian species.

Global declines in amphibian populations are a significant conservation concern, and environmental contamination is likely a contributing driver. Although direct toxicity may be partly responsible, contaminants are often present at sub-lethal concentrations in the wild. Behavioural end-points are becoming an increasingly useful method to estimate the impact of contaminants, particularly if the behavioural responses manifest to affect individual fitness (i.e. survival, growth, or reproduction). In the wild, most animals are affected by multiple stressors, and determining how these interact to a

Changes in the early-life microbiota of hosts might affect infectious disease risk throughout life, if such disruptions during formative times alter immune system development. Here, we test whether an early-life disruption of host-associated microbiota affects later-life resistance to infections by manipulating the microbiota of tadpoles and challenging them with parasitic gut worms as adults. We find that tadpole bacterial diversity is negatively correlated with parasite establishment in adult frogs: adult frogs that had reduced bacterial diversity as tadpoles have three times more worms than

Cutaneous bacteria may play an important role in the resistance of amphibians to the pathogenic fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). Microbial communities resident on hosts' skin show topographical diversity mapping to skin features, as demonstrated by studies of the human microbiome. We examined skin microbiomes of wild and captive fire-bellied toads (Bombina orientalis) for differences across their body surface. We found that bacterial communities differed between ventral and dorsal skin. Wild toads showed slightly higher bacterial richness and diversity in the dorsal compared to the …

We analyzed submission data from a wildlife care group during amphibian disease surveillance in Queensland, Australia. Between January 1999 and December 2004, 877 white-lipped tree frogs Litoria infrafrenata were classified according to origin, season and presenting category. At least 69% originated from urban Cairns, significantly more than from rural and remote areas. Total submissions increased during the early and late dry seasons compared with the early wet season. Frogs most commonly presented each year with injury, followed by 'other', sparganosis and irreversible emaciation of unknown

Seasonally-breeding amphibians have served as excellent animal models to investigate the biosynthesis and biological actions of neurosteroids. Previous studies have demonstrated that the brain of amphibians possesses key steroidogenic enzymes and produces pregnenolone, a precursor of steroid hormones, and other various neurosteroids. We recently found that the brain of seasonally-breeding newts actively produces 7α-hydroxypregnenolone, a previously undescribed amphibian neurosteroid. This novel amphibian neurosteroid acts as a neuronal modulator to stimulate locomotor activity in newts. Subseq…

In addition to the endogenous production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) as a result of normal development, amphibian external development often forces embryos to deal with oxidative stress-producing agents present in the environment. Embryos should therefore develop protective systems to reduce ROS toxicity and achieve successful development. The present work was aimed to characterize the effects produced by the widespread-used ROS-generator pesticide Paraquat during early embryonic development in the toad Chaunus arenarum, as well as to get insights into the defense response elicited by amp

Levels of ultraviolet B radiation (UVBR) reaching the Earth's surface have increased since the 1970s as a result of stratospheric ozone depl … ssolved organic carbon levels in aquatic systems, thereby increasing the penetration of UVBR. Since amphibians inhabit both aquatic and terrestrial habitats and have unshelled eggs and permeable skin, they are vulnerable to changes in environmental conditions and habitat quality.
