A variety of hemoparasites occurs in ruminants of South America (12 degrees 00'N-56 degrees 00'S), but there is consensus on the significant economic impact of babesiosis (Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina) and anaplasmosis (Anaplasma marginale). The tick vector for the Babesia spp. for the whole region is Boophilus microplus which has been the most important target in control/eradication programs. Boophilus microplus and many different hematophagous diptera species are considered vectors of A. marginale. In areas where babesiosis and anaplasmosis are present, the wide range of climates (trop…

OBJECTIVES: To report the presence of tick-borne diseases in dogs living in the United Kingdom.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dogs with a final diagnosis of tick-borne diseases made between January 2005 and August 2019 at seven referral institutions in the United Kingdom were included in the study.
RESULTS: Seventy-six dogs were included: 25 were diagnosed with ehrlichiosis, 23 with babesiosis, eight with Lyme borreliosis and six with anaplasmosis. Fourteen dogs had co-infections with two or three pathogens. Except for those dogs with anaplasmosis and Lyme borreliosis, most dogs with tick-borne dis…

The factors that drive the emergence of vector-borne diseases are difficult to identify due to the complexity of the pathogen-vector-host triad. We used a novel comparative approach to analyse four long-term datasets (1995-2015) on the incidence of tick-borne diseases in humans and livestock (Lyme disease, anaplasmosis and babesiosis) over a geographic area that covered the whole of Norway. This approach allowed us to separate general (shared vector) and specific (pathogen reservoir host) limiting factors of tick-borne diseases, as well as the role of exposure (shared and non-shared pathogens …

The Ixodes tick is an important arthropod vector in the transmission of human disease. Although Lyme disease is the most prevalent zoonosis transmitted by Ixodes ticks, other less common diseases may be encountered, including human granulocytic anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Powassan virus infection, tick-borne encephalitis, Borrelia miyamotoi disease, and tick paralysis. In part 2 of this review, disease presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of these less commonly encountered tick-borne diseases are discussed.

Current and potential applications of biotechnology to detect and control anaplasmosis, bovine babesiosis, cowdriosis, and theileriosis are examined in the light of dramatic advances in molecular biology. Vaccines and the diagnostic use of nucleic acid probes, restriction fragment length polymorphisms, and monoclonal antibodies are discussed in detail, as are novel genetic methods for increasing the resistance of livestock to disease. Strategies are suggested for using molecular and non-molecular approaches in integrated programmes for controlling haemoparasitic diseases of livestock.

Illinois is known to have established populations of four vector tick species of human health concern: Ixodes scapularis, Dermacentor variabilis, Amblyomma americanum, and Amblyomma maculatum. These ticks can transmit pathogens causing eight reportable tick-borne diseases (TBDs): anaplasmosis, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease, spotted fever group rickettsioses (SFG rickettsioses), Powassan virus disease, Heartland virus disease, and Bourbon virus disease. The incidence of these diseases is spatially varied and has been changing over time. The purpose of this research is to describe facto…

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of Babesia coinfecting tick-borne zoonoses and mortality outcomes are not fully elucidated. The objective of the present study was to determine babesiosis coinfection prevalence rates and estimate the association with severe disease and mortality.
METHODS: We queried the TriNetX database between 2015 and 2022 for patients with babesiosis. The prevalence of Babesia coinfecting tick-borne zoonoses was estimated. The analysis focused on babesiosis coinfection with Borrelia burgdorferi, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis. The exposure was coinfection, and the control group …

Rickettsioses are infectious diseases transmitted to human by arthropodes, characterized by different clinical manifestation, from subclinical symptoms, through the mild virus-like infection to severe disease with multiorgan complications. Rickettsiosis include typhus, spotted fevers, anaplasmosis, bartonellosis and Q fever. In some of these diseases respiratory symptoms predominate (i.e. acute Q fever), where as one do not occure in the others at all. Rickettsiosis treatment is based usually on the use of tetracycline antibiotics.

This study reports for the first time molecular detection of Anaplasma platys infection in 4 (13.3%) of 30 Malaysian dogs investigated. A low occurrence (3.3%) of Babesia gibsoni was also noted, being detected in one of the 30 dogs. Rickettsia, Bartonella, Orientia tsutsugamushi, and Ehrlichia DNA were not detected in the dog blood samples. The role of A. platys as an agent of canine anaplasmosis and its transmission through Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks merits further investigation.

We report the case of a 5-year-old male with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia in remission, receiving maintenance chemotherapy, who presented with fever, emesis, diarrhea, headache, and lethargy. He developed rapidly progressive cytopenias and was found to have acute human granulocytic anaplasmosis as well as evidence of past infection with Babesia microti. The case highlights the need to maintain a broad differential for infection in children undergoing chemotherapy or other immunosuppressive therapies with possible or known tick exposure.

Although many infections may potentially cause a false positive Borrelia burgdorferi antibody test, particularly for IgM antibody, babesiosis is not regarded as an infection that does this. A patient with untreated babesiosis is described here who developed transient IgM seropositivity for antibodies to B. burgdorferi. Thus, the diagnosis of Lyme disease coinfection in patients with active babesiosis, as in patients with human granulocytic anaplasmosis, is more convincingly accomplished if an objective clinical manifestation of Lyme disease is present, such as an erythema migrans skin lesion.

A 10-month-old ram with fever, inappetence and haemorrhagic diathesis had petechiae and ecchymoses at various body sites and was infested by ticks. Haematological examination revealed pancytopenia, while serum biochemistry indicated hepatic dysfunction. Blood smears were negative for Ehrlichia spp. and other haemoparasites. Paired sera revealed infection by Anaplasma phagocytophilum, but testing by polymerase chain reaction was negative. Treatment with oxytetracycline was effective. This is the first reported clinical case of ovine anaplasmosis in Greece caused by A. phagocytophilum.

Tick-borne diseases of sheep and goats have not been thoroughly investigated in the Sudan. Heartwater, the most important of the group, was reported only in the early '60s and malignant theileriosis of sheep in the mid '80s. Other tick-borne diseases of sheep and goats like anaplasmosis, Q fever, Nairobi sheep disease and babesiosis are expected to be present although the vector which transmit Nairobi sheep disease, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus is confined to a very narrow stretch on the Southern border with Zaire, Uganda and Kenya.

Anaplasma marginale is a blood-borne rickettsia-like organism that infects cattle erythrocytes and causes anaplasmosis. This study reviews diagnostic data of all A. marginale diagnostics performed from 2003 to August 2021 in the Iowa State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Typically, the referring veterinarian's initial tentative diagnosis was based on presenting clinical signs or necropsy findings. Confirmatory testing at the ISU-VDL consisted of light microscopy evaluation of stained blood smears or molecular diagnostic procedures. A total of 94 cases were submitted with tissue samples from …

BACKGROUND: The density of Ixodes ricinus nymphs infected with Anaplasma phagocytophilum is one of the parameters that determines the risk for humans and domesticated animals to contract anaplasmosis. For this, I. ricinus larvae need to take a bloodmeal from free-ranging ungulates, which are competent hosts for A. phagocytophilum.
METHODS: Here, we compared the contribution of four free-ranging ungulate species, red deer (Cervus elaphus), fallow deer (Dama dama), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), and wild boar (Sus scrofa), to A. phagocytophilum infections in nymphs. We used a combination of ca…

We present a 49-year-old man with subacute onset of fever, weakness, shortness of breath, unilateral lower extremity oedema and pancytopenia who was found to have positive serology for Lyme disease. The patient presented with an intravascular haemolytic pattern on laboratory findings where an extensive infectious disease and haematological workup ruled out ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, HIV, hepatitis B and other parasitic infections. This left a very atypical presentation of Lyme disease.

Anaplasmosis is a tick-borne disease caused by species of the genus Anaplasma. In dogs anaplasmosis is caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Anaplasma platys. These bacteria are in the family Anaplasmataceae in the order Rickettsiales. Anaplasma platys is a Gram-negative bacterium that is of public health and veterinary importance. This pathogen exclusively infects platelets and causes infectious cyclic thrombocytopenia in dogs. Infection occurs through the bite of an infected ixodid tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, which is the principal vector and is also known to transmit Ehrlichia canis, …
