Growth-related shape changes in the fetal craniofacial complex of humans (Homo sapiens) and pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina): a 3D-CT comparative analysis.

This study investigates whether macaques and humans possess a common pattern of relative growth during the fetal period. The fetal samples consist of 16 male pigtailed macaques (mean age, 20.5 gestational weeks) and 17 humans (9 males and 8 females; mean age, 29.5 gestational weeks). For each individual, three-dimensional coordinates of 18 landmarks on the skull were collected from three-dimensional computed tomographic (CT) reconstructed images and two-dimensional CT axial slices. Early and late groups were created from the human (early mean age, 24 weeks, N = 8; late mean age, 34 weeks, N =

Phylo- and -ontogenetically determined local changes in the structure of the arterial wall of vertebrates. Macroscopical findings.

It has been shown, by means of comparative anatomical, phylo- and -ontogenetic studies, that the focal structural changes occuring at seven points in the wall of the aortic arch and brachiocephalic arteries of reptiles, birds, and mammals, and in human-beinmnants of certain vessels which have regressed during embryonic development. They are considered to be loci minoris resistentiae and might therefore represent a site of predilection for pathological lesions, such as atherosclerosis. The existence of these "scars" in human-beings and birds has already been described. This paper presents defin

Vascular Research of Pig Knee from the Perspective of Comparative Medicine.

BACKGROUND: Pigs have long been employed as an animal model for knee-related diseases. However, vascular anatomy around the pig knee is rare. The objective of this study was to explore the vascular anatomy around the pig knee from the perspective of comparative medicine. METHODS: Fifteen fresh cadaveric hindlimbs of hybrid pigs were used in this study. The femoral artery was infused with red- or black-colored latex. The origination, course, and branches of the arteries around the pig knee were observed. RESULTS: The femoral artery around the pig knee has the following branches: the saphenous

Defining the Role of Single-Port Robotic Partial Nephrectomy: Current Evidence, Patient Selection, and Anatomy-Platform Matching.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To critically review the contemporary evidence on single-port robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (SP-RAPN), focusing on comparative outcomes, patient selection, anatomy-based surgical approaches, technical implementation, and its current role relative to multi-port RAPN (MP-RAPN). RECENT FINDINGS: Available comparative studies, multicenter registries, and recent meta-analyses indicate that SP-RAPN achieves perioperative, functional, and early oncological outcomes comparable to MP-RAPN in appropriately selected patients. Its principal added value appears to lie not in univer

Histological features of endplates of the mammalian spine: from mice to men.

STUDY DESIGN: Histological features of the intervertebral disc (IVD)-endplate interface were analyzed. OBJECTIVE: To define cartilaginous and bony vertebral endplate in commonly used laboratory animals and compare with that of the humans. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Endplates are crucial for the IVD nutrient supply: the IVDs have limited blood supply; most nutrients diffuse through endplates to nourish the discs. Various animal models of IVD and endplate degeneration have been used to study the etiology and treatments of spinal disorders. However, because humans are biped, the spine mechanic

Lateral line system and its innervation in Tetraodontiformes with outgroup comparisons: descriptions and phylogenetic implications.

The lateral line system and its innervation in ten tetraodontiform families and five outgroup taxa were examined. Although some homology issues remained unresolved, tetraodontiforms were characterized by having two types (at least) of superficial neuromasts (defined by the presence or absence of supporting structures) and accessory lateral lines and neuromasts (except Molidae in which "accessory" elements were absent). The preopercular line in Tetraodontiformes was not homologous with that of typical teleosts, because the line was innervated by the opercular ramule that was newly derived from

"Open book facial dissection" : an ideal pedagogical approach for learning safe and effective fillers and botulinum toxin injection techniques.

Knowledge of facial anatomy and ageing is essential for safe fillers and botulinum toxin injection procedures with effective aesthetic results. Open book dissection is a reliable and reproducible method of teaching anatomy. It is a visual pedagogical approach based on the layered anatomy of the face. It combines on one hemiface, a dissection of the skin, the superficial fat compartment, the superficial musculo-aponeurotic system and the deep fat compartment and on the contralateral hemiface, a comparative injection demonstration. The ageing processes and the targets of corrective injection are

The angiosomes of the mammals and other vertebrates.

This is a comparative study of the vasculature of the integument and underlying deep tissues of a range of mammals and other vertebrates. The investigation was conducted in the pig, monkey, dog, cat, possum, guinea pig, rat, rabbit, duck, and toad. The results from each are compared not only to each other, but also to previously performed human studies. The arterial network of the fresh animal cadaver was injected with a mixture of lead oxide and gelatin. The vascular anatomy of the skin, deep tissues, and individual muscles was defined by dissection, cutaneous perforator counts, photography,

Postcranial morphology and the locomotor habits of living and extinct carnivorans.

Members of the order Carnivora display a broad range of locomotor habits, including cursorial, scansorial, arboreal, semiaquatic, aquatic, and semifossorial species from multiple families. Ecomorphological analyses from osteological measurements have been used successfully in prior studies of carnivorans and rodents to accurately infer the locomotor habits of extinct species. This study uses 20 postcranial measurements that have been shown to be effective indicators of locomotor habits in rodents and incorporates an extensive sample of over 300 individuals from more than 100 living carnivoran

Crocodylian forelimb musculature and its relevance to Archosauria.

The musculoskeletal anatomy of the crocodylian forelimb is documented to facilitate functional morphological studies of extant and extinct archosaurs. Comparative descriptions of muscles of the forelimb of several crocodylian species are presented, including attachment sites, innervation, and anatomical functions. The muscular anatomy of the crocodylian forelimb is highly conservative among the different species; however, interspecific differences do occur. Interspecific anatomical variation is interpreted functionally, and discussed in the context of the terrestrial locomotion of crocodylians

Ligamentous anatomy of the medial carpal region.

The purpose of this study is to elucidate the ligamentous anatomy of the medial carpus in order to characterize the pathologic basis of pisiform subluxation secondary to traumatic ligament rupture. Medial carpal ligamentous anatomy has been studied in the past by anatomic dissection and analyzed in terms of comparative morphology. A review of this literature reveals that the anatomy of the region requires further definition. We have performed cadaveric dissections that reveal that the ulnar or medial carpal ligament complex is composed of three structures: (1) the triangular fibrocartilage, (2

Review on the thorax musculature in Odonata (Insecta), including the 3D-anatomy of adult Epiophlebiasuperstes.

Odonata comprises Anisoptera (dragonflies), Zygoptera (damselflies), and Epiophlebia, with Anisoptera and Epiophlebia forming the clade Epiprocta. Anisoptera exhibits robust bodies, dissimilar wing pairs, and eyes that may touch, while Zygoptera has slender bodies, uniform wings, and separated eyes; Epiophlebia, however, combines features of both, reflecting likely an ancestral condition. Detailed studies of odonatan thoracic musculature reveal differences between life stages and taxa, highlighting adaptations to larval aquatic and adult aerial lifestyles. This study revisited the thorax anato

Meckel's diverticulum and the eponymous legend.

Johann Friedrich Meckel (1781-1833) was a 19th century anatomist born into an eminent dynasty. He was a professor of anatomy, pathology, and zoology at the University of Halle, in Central Germany. The diverticulum, a congenital remnant of the vitellointestinal duct was named after him. Other eponyms include Meckel's cartilage, Meckel syndrome, and Meckel-Serres law of recapitulation. His concepts in comparative anatomy, embryology, and teratology anticipated Darwin. This review is a short tribute to this legend and his prolific contributions. LEVEL: Historic review, level V.

The importance of mentorship for early career neuroanatomists: A historical analysis from the University of Michigan.

Gotthelf "Carl" Huber, M.D. (1865-1934) was a professor of histology and embryology, and later professor of anatomy at the University of Michigan. His scientific contributions to the understanding of the peripheral nervous system, the blood supply of the kidney and the comparative anatomy of the central nervous system may be eclipsed in importance by his dedication to mentorship, education, and employment of underrepresented neuroanatomists. Under Huber's guidance, Lydia DeWitt, MD (1859-1928) published work on neuroanatomy and on the anatomy of the heart and the pancreas. In 1902, barred from

Animating Metoidioplasty Anatomy for Urology Nursing Practice.

Transgender patients that have undergone metoidioplasty with urethral lengthening may face challenges in healthcare settings that necessitate urinary catheterization. Currently, there are no readily accessible resources that aim to inform nurses about the appearance and treatment of this anatomy. Here, a 3D animation has been created, showing labelled comparative anatomy. Evaluation of this animation will result in valuable feedback of which video elements have facilitated successful learning. Implications for this project call attention to the need for gender-diverse representation within uri
