Spontaneous pregnancy outcome after prenatal diagnosis of anencephaly.

Parents are usually told that many anencephalic offspring die in utero or soon after delivery, and many obstetricians offer elective termination of the pregnancy. Following the personal experience of the first author, a personal website was created with the intention of providing information and exchanging views with other parents confronted with a prenatal diagnosis of anencephaly. Data were collected from 211 pregnancies where the parents opted not to terminate pregnancy. These data revealed that polyhydramnios was a feature in 56 (26%) pregnancies, death in utero in 15 (7%) pregnancies, 72 …

Prenatal ultrasound semiography of anencephaly: sonographic-pathological correlations.

A better understanding of the ultrasound findings in each of the different types of fetal anencephaly can help to reduce the number of false-negative diagnoses of this condition during the prenatal period. Errors in the estimation of the remaining cerebral tissue (angiomatous stroma, area cerebrovasculosa) can cause false-negative diagnoses or diagnostic confusion with cases of microcephaly or incomplete ossification of the cranial vault. In a retrospective study, 30 fetuses with anencephaly (diagnosed at 13-38 weeks of gestation) were grouped, in terms of their ultrasound results, according t…

A Devastating Diagnosis: Anencephaly With Unexpected Fetal Heartbeat.

This case report describes a severe birth defect called anencephaly in a fetus at 18 weeks of pregnancy. Anencephaly occurs when the upper part of the baby's brain and skull do not form correctly. This condition is usually detected earlier in pregnancy, often in the first three months. However, this case was discovered at 18 weeks, highlighting the need for careful monitoring throughout pregnancy. The unique aspect of this case is that most pregnancies with anencephaly do not progress this far. This later diagnosis provides important information about the different ways the condition can devel…

The impact of anencephaly on parents: A mixed-methods study.

This study used a convergent parallel mixed-method design to explore the impact of an anencephalic pregnancy on parents. Twenty women and four men between 18-59 years old participated. Interview transcripts were analyzed using interpretive phenomenology and synthesized with Perinatal Grief Intensity Scale scores using a Pearson's correlation. Overall, 75% of parents scored intense grief. Qualitative patterns included overwhelming trauma, patient-centeredness as critical, stigmatizing perinatal loss, embracing personhood, and reframing reality. Control over care was associated with decreased gr

Anencephaly and obstetric outcome beyond the age of viability.

Objective To review the obstetric impact and natural history of anencephalic pregnancies beyond the age of viability. Study design A retrospective chart review of all cases with a prenatal diagnosis of anencephaly who delivered after 24 weeks' gestation during the period 1990 until 2016. Obstetric outcomes including mode of delivery, live births, shoulder dystocia, antepartum haemorrhage (APH), postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) and uterine rupture were studied. Results A total of 42 cases were studied. The average gestational age at diagnosis was 22 weeks (range 10-41). The average gestational age …

Complete ectopia cordis with anencephaly: a case report.

We report a case of pentalogy of Cantrell with anencephaly diagnosed in utero on 2-dimensional sonography at 17 weeks of gestation. Due to associated anencephaly, termination of pregnancy was carried out. Histopathological examination confirmed the sonographic findings.

Anencephaly and the interruption of pregnancy: policy proposals for HECs.

This article is directed to hospital communities where absolute proscriptions exist against abortion. The assumption is that many will be Catholic institutions and therefore Catholic moral teachings are examined carefully. By addressing anti-abortion arguments in the context of anencephaly, I hope to show that within even the most conservative moral traditions, humane exceptions to absolute proscriptions against abortion can be justified. More specifically, the article is directed to HECs which either have unstated or ambiguous policies on abortion. It will attempt to show what a reasonable po…

Reproductive organs in anencephaly with special reference to the uterus.

A survey has been made of the reproductive organs of anencephalic fetuses with special reference to the uterus and the vagina. The uteri and the vaginae of 15 anencephalic fetuses were examined and compared with 29 controls. The uterus showed normal development and reacted normally to hormonal stimulation by showing vascular, stromal and glandular proliferation and glandular diastase-resistant mucin secretion in varying degrees. All these processes were fully developed during the last month of pregnancy, offering the same picture as the controls. Cervix and vagina showed good maturation of squ

Anencephaly and the nature of fetal response to vibroacoustic stimulation.

The fetal response to vibroacoustic stimulation has been used in recent years as a measure of well being. Vibroacoustic stimulation theoretically may evoke both tactile and auditory responses in the fetus. In clinical practice, it is important to distinguish which type of response is actually activated. An answer may be suggested through observation of two anencephalic fetuses who demonstrated no response to such stimulation. Neuroanatomic considerations are discussed that suggest which auditory mechanisms are involved in the fetal response to vibroacoustic stimulation.
