Case Report: Clinicopathological findings of a cutaneous mast cell tumor in a young domestic meerkat (Suricata suricatta).

A 10-month-old female domestic meerkat (Suricata suricatta) was presented with a cutaneous nodule in the left axillary region. The animal was clinically healthy and radiographs showed no evidence of involvement of visceral organs. Based on fine-needle aspirate that revealed numerous well-differentiated mast cells, a mast cell tumor was suspected. Surgical excision was performed and the mass submitted for histologic examination. Histopathological findings showed a round cell tumor, with marked cellular atypia and moderate mitotic activity; Giemsa special staining revealed a large number of fine

North American Arboviruses and White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus): Associated Diseases and Role in Transmission.

Background: Arboviral disease is of increasing concern to human and animal health professionals as emerging and re-emerging arboviruses are more frequently recognized. Wildlife species are known to play a role in the transmission and maintenance of arboviruses and infections can result in morbidity and mortality in wildlife hosts. Materials and Methods: In this review, we detail existing evidence of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) as an important host to a diverse collection of arboviruses and evaluate the utility of this species as a resource to better understand the epidemiology o

Detection of Carfentanil by LC-MS-MS and Reports of Associated Fatalities in the USA.

Carfentanil is a mu (μ) opioid receptor agonist and is estimated to be ~10,000 times more potent than morphine in animal (non-human) models. It is not approved for human use and is only used to immobilize large exotic animals in veterinary medicine. In mid-2016, carfentanil emerged as a contaminant in street heroin in the USA and was central to a large number of emergency department visits and deaths. We describe an analytical method for the detection and quantification of carfentanil in whole blood specimens via a protein precipitation extraction with acetonitrile and liquid chromatography wi

Identification of the sex pheromone of the invasive scale Acutaspis albopicta (Hemiptera: Diaspididae), arriving in California on shipments of avocados from Mexico.

As a result of relaxation of importation restrictions ordered by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, shipments of fresh avocados from Mexico began entering California year-round in 2007, despite the fact that these shipments were heavily infested with a number of exotic and potentially invasive armored scale species that are not thought to be present in California. Here, we report the identification of the sex pheromone of one of these species, Acutaspis albopicta (Cockerell), from a quarantine colony of these insects initiated from specimens c

One Health Approach to Tick and Tick-Borne Disease Surveillance in the United Kingdom.

Where ticks are found, tick-borne diseases can present a threat to human and animal health. The aetiology of many of these important diseases, including Lyme disease, bovine babesiosis, tick-borne fever and louping ill, have been known for decades whilst others have only recently been documented in the United Kingdom (UK). Further threats such as the importation of exotic ticks through human activity or bird migration, combined with changes to either the habitat or climate could increase the risk of tick-borne disease persistence and transmission. Prevention of tick-borne diseases for the huma

Perspectives and Outcomes of the Activity of a Reference Laboratory for Brucellosis.

One health is an emerging conceptual approach geared to harmonize the activities of the public health, veterinary services, and extension services within a single operative structure. Brucellosis is an important zoonosis worldwide, mostly involving nomadic populations but may often affect transboundary animal management and exotic domesticated animal farming such as camels and buffalo. Here, we provide contemporary knowledge on the disease and its causative agent, a Gram-negative bacteria belonging to the genus Brucella. Further, because of the zoonotic importance, we emphasize the need to ass

Equine cloning: applications and outcomes.

Cloning is one of several new assisted reproductive techniques being developed for clinical use in the equine industry. Potential uses of equine cloning include: (1) the preservation of genetics from individual animals that would otherwise not be able to reproduce, such as geldings; (2) the preservation of genetic material of endangered and/or exotic species, such as the Mongolian wild horse (Przewalski's horse); and (3) because of the companion animal role that horses fill for some individuals, it is likely that some horse owners will have individual animals cloned for emotional fulfillment.

The twenty most charismatic species.

Charisma is a term commonly used in conservation biology to describe species. However, as the term "charismatic species" has never been properly defined, it needs to be better characterized to fully meet its potential in conservation biology. To provide a more complete depiction, we collected information from four different sources to define the species currently considered to be the most charismatic and to understand what they represent to the Western public. First, we asked respondents of two separate surveys to identify the 10 animal species that they considered to be the most charismatic a

Administration of vaccinia virus to mice may cause contact or bedding sentinel mice to test positive for orthopoxvirus antibodies: case report and follow-up investigation.

Routine testing of bedding sentinels from a barrier room revealed one mouse seropositive to ectromelia virus (EV). Results of hemagglutination-inhibition testing and western blot analysis were confirmatory for orthopoxvirus antibodies. Additional seropositive animals were not identified. Interviews indicated that replication-competent vaccinia virus (VV), Western Reserve strain (VV-WR), recently had been given to mice. Although VV-WR was not expected to spread by contact or via fomites, the case evidence suggested transmission of vaccinia via soiled bedding. In a follow-up experiment, 15 index

Genomic Imprinting in Animals: Evolutionary Conservation with Adaptive Flexibility.

Imprinting is an epigenetic mechanism found in many diploid organisms that enables discrimination between genetic material inherited from one or the other parent. It has been predominantly studied in mammals, where, in the adult, it affects the expression of a limited set of genes (in most higher mammals) or leads to paternal X chromosome inactivation in marsupials. DNA CpG methylation and heterochromatic epigenetic marks play a crucial role in these processes. Imprinting also exists in other organisms, where it can cause unusual parent-of-origin-dependent effects. Two classical examples are w

Antimicrobial multiresistance in microorganisms of the Enterobacterales order isolated from exotic passerines from farms in the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza.

The aim of this study was to assess the degree of antimicrobial resistance in strains of the Enterobacterales order isolated from exotic passerine birds originated from breeding facilities in the metropolitan region of Fortaleza. For this purpose, 104 strains of ten different bacterial species were used. To perform the antibiogram, ten antibiotics from eight pharmacological classes were employed. Among the main results, a high resistance rate was found for some antimicrobials, notably ampicillin (91.35%) and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (47.12%). Additionally, relevant rates of resistance wer

Anurans or Mice: What is the Best Food Item for Young and Adults of Bothrops jararacussu (Lacerda, 1884) in Captivity?

Good feed management in captivity is essential to animal survival and well-being. For snakes, most studies focus on the frequency of prey consumption and the types of prey that constitute their diets in the wild. Conversely, there is a notable scarcity of studies regarding their dietary habits in captivity. The prevailing trend involves feeding nearly all snake species exclusively with mice, barring the exceptions found in ophiophagic species. Considering that Bothrops species consume different diets in young and adults in the wild, we use B. jararacussu as a model to introduce other prey item

Disseminated Mycobacterium haemophilum infection in an ASSAM trinket snake (Elaphe frenata).

A sub-adult male Assam trinket snake (Elaphe frenata) that was confiscated from an exotic animal dealer was found dead in its enclosure after a 17-mo quarantine. The snake had grown well during that period and had no physical examination or bloodwork abnormalities during the quarantine. On gross necropsy, masses were found in the epaxial musculature and stomach, the lung was diffusely thickened, the ventricular wall was mottled, and there was intracoelomic and pericardial effusion. Histopathology revealed diffusely disseminated granulomatous infiltrates throughout the lung interstitium and mul

Yeast-associated skin disease in captive king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) caused by an undescribed Malassezia species in a Swiss zoological garden.

BACKGROUND: Malassezia spp. are lipophilic yeasts that form part of the normal skin flora in many warm-blooded vertebrates but can act as opportunistic pathogens under certain conditions. While commonly implicated in dermatoses in domestic animals, Malassezia-associated skin infections in birds, especially aquatic species, are rarely reported. In avian species, diagnostic criteria and treatment protocols are poorly defined, with most knowledge extrapolated from mammals or limited to isolated case reports. Further documentation is needed to better understand host susceptibility, clinical presen

Harnessing veterinary nanomedicine: A One Health perspective.

Nanomedicine exploits the unique physicochemical properties of nanomaterials to enable advanced diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. In veterinary medicine, nanotechnology is rapidly emerging as a transformative platform across companion animals, livestock, and exotic species, with direct implications for animal welfare, productivity, and the One Health framework. Although several reviews have addressed specific aspects of nanotechnology in animal health, the field is expanding rapidly, generating new technological developments and translational insights that remain dispersed across discipli

Non-tuberculous Mycobacterium species causing mycobacteriosis in farmed aquatic animals of South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Mycobacteriosis caused by non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), is among the most chronic diseases of aquatic animals. In addition, fish mycobacteriosis has substantial economic consequences especially in the aquaculture and fisheries industry as infections may significantly decrease production and trade. Some fish NTM pathogens are highly virulent and zoonotic; as such, infection of aquaria with these pathogens is a public health concern. In this study, we report isolation of nine different NTM species from sixteen aquatic animals including different fish species, frogs and a crocod

Genome-wide comparison of cowpox viruses reveals a new clade related to Variola virus.

Zoonotic infections caused by several orthopoxviruses (OPV) like monkeypox virus or vaccinia virus have a significant impact on human health. In Europe, the number of diagnosed infections with cowpox viruses (CPXV) is increasing in animals as well as in humans. CPXV used to be enzootic in cattle; however, such infections were not being diagnosed over the last decades. Instead, individual cases of cowpox are being found in cats or exotic zoo animals that transmit the infection to humans. Both animals and humans reveal local exanthema on arms and legs or on the face. Although cowpox is generally

Seroprevalence of rift valley fever virus and associated risk factors in small ruminants at human-livestock-wildlife interface within Uganda's conservation areas.

BACKGROUND: Following the first laboratory confirmed human Rift Valley Fever Virus (RVFV) outbreak in 48 years, Uganda has continued to detect sporadic outbreaks, particularly within the cattle corridor since 2016. Although wildlife potentially harbors RVFV strains, livestock exposure to RVFV at human-livestock-wildlife interfaces remains underexplored in major Ugandan conservation areas. METHODS: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted between August, 2022 and March, 2023, at Satellite Research Sites (SRS), located in Bwindi-Mgahinga, Lake Mburo, Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, a

Potentially Zoonotic Bacteria in Exotic Freshwater Turtles from the Canary Islands (Spain).

The pond slider (Trachemys scripta) is native to the southeastern United States but has been introduced all around the world, including to the Canary Islands (Spain), along with other less-common exotic freshwater turtles such as Graptemys pseudogeographica, Mauremys spp., and Pseudemys peninsularis. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of pathogenic bacteria in these animals and to evaluate the associated health risks for humans and local fauna. For this purpose, cloacal samples from 42 specimens collected on the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) were analyz

Monkeypox: A New Threat?

The global vaccination programme against smallpox led to its successful eradication and averted millions of deaths. Monkeypox virus (MPXV) is a close relative of the Variola (smallpox) virus. Due to antigenic similarity, smallpox vaccines cross-protect against MPXV. However, over 70% of people living today were never vaccinated against smallpox. Symptoms of monkeypox (MPX) include fever, head- and muscle ache, lymphadenopathy and a characteristic rash that develops into papules, vesicles and pustules which eventually scab over and heal. MPX is less often fatal (case fatality rates range from <
