Three ponies continuously grazed a pasture containing an estimated 24% Indigofera spicata (wet weight basis) for 4-6 weeks in April and May 2004. They developed ataxia, paresis, depression, muscle fasciculations, dysphagia, ptyalism and halitosis. Two also developed corneal opacity. One pony recovered with supportive treatment, but the other two were euthanased and necropsied. Neuropathology was not present in either case, but both livers had periacinar and periportal lymphocytic infiltrations and hydropic degeneration of mid-zonal hepatocytes, with mild to moderate periacinar necrosis also ev

INTRODUCTION: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is found in petroleum, natural gas, and decaying organic matter. Terrorist groups have attempted to use it in enclosed spaces as a chemical weapon. Mass casualty scenarios have occurred from industrial accidents and release from oil field sites. There is no FDA approved antidote for sulfide poisoning. We have previously reported that intravenous cobinamide is effective for sulfide poisoning. A rapid-acting antidote that is easy to administer intramuscularly (IM) would be ideal for use in a prehospital setting. In this study, we assessed survival in sulfide-

A 17 year old male developed adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), seizures, intravascular hemolysis and peripheral neuropathy following self-poisoning with a pesticide containing 14.5% indoxacarb. He was managed conservatively with fluid management, antibiotics, mechanical ventilation and physiotherapy. There is limited data concerning the human toxicity of indoxacarb. This case demonstrates that findings from animal studies, such as seizures, respiratory distress, and intravascular hemolysis are possible following self-poisoning in humans. In this patient, partial recovery was achieved

A description of the clinical signs and pathological changes is given of 2 outbreaks of suspected hybrid vetch poisoning in the Humansdorp district, Republic of South Africa. These were characterised by a severe dermatitis, high morbidity and mortality in older cows. Microscopically granulomatous lesions occurred in the kidneys, liver, myocardium, spleen and skin. Variable numbers of multinucleated giant cells and eosinophils were seen in these lesions. Acute multifocal hepatic necrosis was observed in 2 animals. Brief comparisons are made with outbreaks of vetch poisoning in other parts of th

Datura stramonium is a well-known cosmopolitan weed known by several common names: thorn apple (due to the appearance of its fruits), Angel's trumpet (linked to its flowers), loco seed (referring to the hallucinogenic properties of its seeds), jimson weed (originating from the first recorded poisoning involving this plant), and apple of Peru (indicating the plant's origin). All parts of the plant contain the tropane alkaloids hyoscyamine, scopolamine, and atropine together with several minor alkaloids, which cause poisoning such as typical anticholinergic syndrome with neuropsychiatric effects

Despite established exposure limits and safety standards, and the availability of carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, each year 50,000 people in the United States visit emergency departments for CO poisoning. Carbon monoxide poisoning can occur from brief exposures to high levels of CO, or from longer exposures to lower levels. Common symptoms include headaches, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, general malaise, and altered mental status. Some patients may have chest pain, shortness of breath and myocardial ischemia, and may require mechanical ventilation and treatment of shock. Individuals poisoned by

Arsenic (As) is a poisonous metalloid that is toxic to both humans and animals. Drinking water contamination has been linked to the development of cancer (skin, lung, urinary bladder, and liver), as well as other disorders such as diabetes and cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, neurological, and developmental damage. According to epidemiological studies, As contributes to male infertility, sexual dysfunction, poor sperm quality, and developmental consequences such as low birth weight, spontaneous abortion, and small for gestational age (SGA). Arsenic exposure negatively affected male reproducti

Loxosceles spiders are found in almost all countries of South America. In Peru, Loxosceles laeta species is the main responsible for the accidents caused by poisonous animals, being known as "killer spiders", due to the large number of fatal accidents observed. Astacin-like metalloproteases, named LALPs (Loxosceles astacin-like metalloproteases) are highly expressed in Loxosceles spiders venom gland. These proteases may be involved in hemorrhage and venom spreading, being relevant to the envenoming proccess. Thus, the aim of this work was to analyze Peruvian L. laeta venom gland transcripts us

Toxic weaponry in the form of venom and poison has evolved in most groups of animals, including all four major lineages of tetrapods. Moreover, the evolution of such traits has been linked to several key aspects of the biology of toxic animals including life-history and diversification. Despite this, attempts to investigate the macroevolutionary patterns underlying such weaponry are lacking. In this study we analyse patterns of venom and poison evolution across reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and birds using a suite of phylogenetic comparative methods. We find that each major lineage has a char

Fluoroacetamide (Mw = 77.06) is a lethal rodenticide to humans and animals which is still frequently abused in food storage somewhere in China. The production of antibodies for fluoroacetamide is difficult due to its high toxicity to animals, which limits the application of immunoassay method in poison detection. In this work, aptamers targeting N-fluoroacetyl glycine as an analog of fluoroacetamide were selected by a specific systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX) strategy. The binding ability of the selected aptamers to fluoroacetamide was identified using surface

Human antibodies against botulinum toxins A, B, and E have been raised by repeated injections of pentavalent toxoid in a healthy volunteer. The final titer was 3.2 U anti-A, 0.4 U anti-B, and 2.5 U anti-E/ml. In mice, the efficacy of the antitoxin decreases with the time between poisoning and application of the antiserum. The dose recommended for prophylactic purposes in man is 1 ml/kg. In overt poisoning, therapy should be started with higher titer animal serum since in animal experiments high titer sera can stop (although not reverse) the symptoms of overt botulism within an-admittedly not t

We reviewed the history, epidemiology, clinical signs, pathology, pathogenesis, treatment, control, and prophylaxis of Sorghum poisoning in livestock. Economic losses in the livestock industry associated with sorghum have been reported since the 19th century. Hyperacute/acute poisoning associated with cyanide (HCN) or nitrate/nitrite frequently occurs in ruminants that consume high quantities of growth and regrowth sorghum after drought, followed by rainfall, respectively. Chronic cystitis-ataxia syndrome primarily affects horses after weeks of grazing on sorghum pastures, while congenital art

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular drug poisoning remains a leading cause of fatality. Within this class, calcium channel blockers (CCBs) account for the majority of deaths. CCBs are typically categorized as dihydropyridines (i.e. amlodipine or nifedipine) versus the non-dihydropyridine (i.e. verapamil and diltiazem) which are the most potent and once considered the CCB type responsible for all CCB-related deaths. Most recently, dihydropyridine deaths have increased. While there are established models of nondihydropyridine poisoning there currently are no established experimental models of dihydropyri

Strychnine toxicosis is characterized by inducible tetanic seizures and metaldehyde poisoning by fine fasciculations progressing to generalized tremors and seizures. Intoxication with 1080 causes seizures, random running movements, vomiting, defecation, urination, acidosis and hyperglycemia. Intoxication with rodenticides causing coagulopathy is characterized by hemorrhage into body cavities but not necessarily external hemorrhage. Anticholinesterase insecticides cause salivation, urination and defecation, while chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides cause CNS disturbances. Ethylene glycol intox

It is estimated that every year about 500 000 people around the world are bitten by poisonous snakes. Between 30 000 to 50 000 persons die due to snake-bites; the highest frequency is reported from Southern Asia. Clinically three types of snake-bites can be distinguished: 1. Bites with local damage (extreme pain, edema, necrosis), 2. Bites followed by generalized hemorrhagic symptoms and 3. bites with neurotoxic effects of the poison (no local pain, paralysis of cerebral nerves, coma). For tropical snake-bites snake-venom is live-saving. As in many cases the biting animal cannot be identified

INTRODUCTION: Paediatric poisoning is a major cause of childhood injury, and most poisonings are preventable. We aimed to describe hospitalisations resulting from poisoning and envenomation in Australian children, including demographics, cause of the exposure, hospital length of stay, rates of intensive care unit admission and in-hospital deaths. We also aimed to describe risk factors for increased length of stay and intensive care unit admission.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of hospitalised poisoning and envenomation cases of children (<15 years) in Australia from 1 July 2

BACKGROUND: Anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) poisoning was diagnosed in 3 Patagonian maras (Dolichotis patagonum) raised in the mara farm in Thailand. To date, there have been no reports of maras with diagnosed AR poisoning.
CASE PRESENTATION: The first clinical sign of the sickening maras was anorexia. Fifteen from 50 maras were dead over a 3-5 day period after the clinical signs had occurred. Positive results to AR were detected in all of the maras' liver specimens by screening test using thin layer chromatography and spectrophotometry methods. Supportive therapy was selected for the treatmen
