BACKGROUND: In response to the all-time high of female sports participation, there has been increasing scientific discourse and media interest in women's sporting injuries in recent years. In gender comparable sports the rate of foot and ankle injury for women is higher than for men. There are intrinsic and extrinsic factors which may explain this difference.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed according to the PRISMA guidelines of PubMed, Ovid EMBASE and OVID MEDLINE. Relevant key terms were used to narrow the scope of the search prior to screening. Case reports, review art

Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world. It has undergone many changes in recent years, mainly because of increased physical demands, and this has led to an increased injury risk. Direct contact accounts for half of all injuries in both indoor and outdoor soccer and ankle sprains are the most common foot and ankle injury. There is a spectrum of foot and ankle injuries and their treatment should be individualized in these high-demand patients. An injury prevention program is also important and should the players, the trainer, responsible physician, and physical therapists.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency has been identified as one of the most common causes of fragility fractures and poor fracture healing. Although rates of vitamin D deficiency have been delineated in various orthopaedic populations, little is known about the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with foot and ankle disorders. The goal of this study was to identify the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with a low energy fracture of the foot or ankle.
METHODS: Over a 6-month period, a serum 25-OH vitamin D level was obtained from consecutive patients with a low energy ankle

Studies regarding ankle and foot overuse injuries are quite diverse in research methodology, data reporting, and outcomes. The aims of this systematic review were to analyze the methodology of published studies regarding ankle and foot overuse injuries in different sports disciplines and to summarize epidemiological data of ankle and foot overuse injuries. Four electronic databases, PubMed (MEDLINE), EMBASE, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus(®) were systematically searched up to June 2011. A total of 89 articles on 23 sports disciplines were included in this review. Soccer, running, and gymnastics were

BACKGROUND: Prolonged lateral instability of the ankle after ligament injury has been believed to be a major cause of osteoarthritis of the ankle, yet the rate of development of osteoarthritis of the ankle is relatively low. Clarifying the relationship between patient factors and chondral damage of the ankle with prolonged instability is essential to identify the important risk factors underlying osteoarthritis of the ankle.
METHODS: Arthroscopic examination was performed to assess the condition of the articular cartilage in a series of patients with prolonged lateral instability of the ankle

BACKGROUND: In some pediatric ankle and wrist injuries, the clinical picture is suggestive of a fracture despite negative standard radiographs.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this prospective study was to determine the effectiveness of high-resolution ultrasound (US) in differentiating radiographically occult fractures from sprains.
METHODS: During a period of 3 years children aged 2 to 16 years, who sustained an acute ankle and wrist injury suggestive of being a fracture on clinical examination, but with negative radiograph, were referred for high-resolution US. Follow-up radiographs were obtained

Nerve injuries of the foot and ankle can result in pain, numbness, or loss of motor function. A thorough history and physical examination are required to diagnose the injury correctly and guide treatment. Treatment may involve conservative measures, primary nerve repair or nerve grafting, or resection and relocation of painful neuroma. Potential complications include the development of chronic pain syndromes.

Foot and ankle pain is common in ballet dancers. Although clinical examination often points to the underlying cause, imaging is often necessary to confirm the diagnosis and thus ensure appropriate future management. Factors predisposing to the increased incidence of injuries in this population include the classical position in which ballet dancers stand, which is on the tips of the toes in the en pointe position or on the balls of the feet in the demi-pointe position. Furthermore, the repetitious nature of ballet and the long hours spent rehearsing cause over-use injuries. The causes of foot a

The ankle is one of the most frequently injured joints in the course of sports activities. MR imaging has become the modality of choice in the evaluation of most of these lesions, especially in competitive athletes. The purpose of this article is: (1) To illustrate the MR imaging features of a great number of sports-related injuries of the ankle, correlating it with lesional mechanisms and clinical findings, and (2) To review the role of MR imaging in clinical management and surgical planning of these injuries, especially in competitive athletes. In order to a better understanding of these les

BACKGROUND: Acute lateral ankle ligament ruptures are common problems in present health care. Early mobilisation and functional treatment are advocated as a preferable treatment strategy. However, functional treatment comprises a broad spectrum of treatment strategies and as of yet no optimal strategy has been identified.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review is to assess different functional treatment strategies for acute lateral ankle ligament ruptures in adults.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Musculoskeletal Injuries Group specialised register (December 2001), the Cochrane C

BACKGROUND: Acute lateral ankle ligament injuries (ankle sprains) are common problems in acute medical care. The treatment variation observed for the acutely injured lateral ankle ligament complex suggests a lack of evidence-based management strategies for this problem.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to assess the effectiveness of methods of immobilisation for acute lateral ankle ligament injuries and to compare immobilisation with functional treatment methods.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Musculoskeletal Injuries Group specialised register (December 2001); the Coc

The study has assessed the usefulness of ankle joint injuries for deducing about the presumable location of a pedestrian in relation to a motor vehicle at the moment of collision. A statistically significant correlation was found between the direction of impact and the mechanism of ankle joint injuries. Such injuries were found in 113 of 317 pedestrian, fatal victims of road traffic accidents (36%). In the cases of impacts on the medial surface of the lower limb, the injuries associated with the supination mechanism were six times more frequent than the injuries associated with the pronation m

This paper discusses MR imaging in injuries to the lateral collateral ankle ligaments. Based on recent publications and our own results MR imaging may be useful for demonstration of ankle ligament tears. However, clinical outcome can probably not be predicted by such diagnosis. MR imaging may still be useful in certain settings, such as suspected additional trauma to medial ligaments, bone, or articular cartilage. In chronic pain MR imaging may be indicated for demonstration of articular bodies, occult fractures, significant cartilage damage, tendon injuries and dislocations, and soft tissue s

Diagnostical and therapeutical problems associated with supination-adduction injuries are presented. 457 ankle fractures were collected from a retrospective material of 919 children aged 0-18 years with fractures of the tibio-fibular shaft or the ankle. The ankle fractures were classified anatomically according to Salter and Harris and traumatologically according to Gerner-Smidt. 147 fractures were classified as due to supination-adduction, of which 128 had open growth plates. The first stage, a Salter-Harris type I, II, or III fracture through the lateral malleolus or only epiphyseal fracture

BACKGROUND: Acute lateral ankle ligament injuries are very common problems in present health care. Still there is no hard evidence about which treatment strategy is superior. Current evidence supports the view that a functional treatment strategy is preferable, but insufficient data are present to prove the benefit of external support devices in these types of treatment. The hypothesis of our study is that external ankle support devices will not result in better outcome in the treatment of acute ankle sprains, compared to a purely functional treatment strategy. Overall objective is to compare

Introduction Ankle trauma is a frequent presentation to the emergency department (ED) and poses a significant demand on radiology services. Efficient triage is essential to identify patients requiring urgent imaging, optimising resources, reducing waiting times, and minimising unnecessary radiation exposure. Injuries range from soft tissue damage to fractures of the distal tibia, fibula, or malleoli. Not all ankle injuries require immediate imaging, and clinical decision-making tools can guide the use of radiographs. The Ottawa Ankle Rules (OAR) are a validated tool, endorsed by the Royal Coll
