Anorectal malformations (ARMs) are congenital anomalies that include a variety of anomalies. An imperforate anus is the most typical presentation of all the ARMs. It can present with a fistula of the vestibule, vagina, fourchette, and perineum. Though in developed countries, it is diagnosed early and managed during the first few months of life, in low-resource settings, patients present with ARM later in life. Our case presented a 24-year-old with an imperforate anus and rectoperineal fistula. This is the oldest patient to be reported in the literature with an imperforate anus. Modified poster

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate clinically and manometrically the anorectal function of patients with imperforate anus after repair with laparoscopically assisted anorectoplasty (LAR), as compared with the function of patients after undergoing the conventional method, posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP).
METHODS: The defecation status and anorectal manometry of patients with high or intermediate type imperforate anus repaired with LAR ( n = 9) and age-matched patients repaired with PSARP ( n = 13) were assessed and compared during the first year of postoperative follow-up evalu

BACKGROUND: Scimitar syndrome is a rare form of partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage associated with pulmonary hypertension and congestive heart failure that may lead to death in the newborn infant. Although it is described with anomalies of the lung, heart and their vascular structure, extremely rare association with imperforate anus had been reported. The third case of Scimitar syndrome and imperforate anus will be reported in this case report.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 3 days old male neonate with imperforate anus presented with abdominal distention. Loop colostomy was done to relieve ab

According to multiple researchers and studies, congenital heart disease (CHD) occurs in approximately 4.8-12.0 of 1,000 live births in the general population, and 2.4 per 1,000 cases are serious enough to require surgery or cardiac catheterization in the first year of life.1 Historically, it has been assumed that the earlier the gestational age with CHD, the poorer the outcome; however, with continued improvements in neonatal care, this hypothesis should be looked at more closely. This case illustrates the challenges associated with prematurity, complex cardiac defects, intraventricular hemorr

We describe the clinical characterization, molecular analyses, and genetic mapping of a distinct genetic condition characterized by craniosynostosis, delayed closure of the fontanel, cranial defects, clavicular hypoplasia, anal and genitourinary malformations, and skin eruption. We have identified seven patients with this phenotype in four families from different geographic regions and ethnic backgrounds. This is an autosomal recessive condition that brings together apparently opposing pathophysiologic and developmental processes, including accelerated suture closure and delayed ossification.

We report on six infants with a neonatally lethal malformation syndrome of hypothalamic hamartoblastoma, postaxial polydactyly, and imperforate anus. Some, but not all, patients had laryngeal cleft, abnormal lung lobulation, renal agenesis and/or renal dysplasia, short 4th metacarpals, nail dysplasia, multiple buccal frenula, hypoadrenalism, microphallus, congenital heart defect, and intrauterine growth retardation. The infants also had hypopituitarism and hypoadrenalism. All were sporadic cases, parents were not consanguineous, chromosomes were apparently normal. Family histories were unremar

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes and postoperative anorectal function in the patients with high/intermediate imperforate anus (HIA/IIA) treated in our institution. In addition, we report our novel procedure, laparoscopically assisted anorectoplasty with anterior perineal incision (LAARP-API), which allows direct approach to the anterior edge of the puborectal sling and muscle complex, and is useful for the creation of a pulling-through route for the rectal pouch.
METHODS: From 1976 to 2016, 22 patients with HIA and 43 patients with IIA underwent sacroperine

A patient with multiple congenital malformations, including imperforate anus, bilateral cryptorchidism and microphallus, is described. At 4 months of age the infant had generalized convulsions and hypoglycaemia. Bilateral hydronephrosis was diagnosed at 8 months of age. At 10 months he was diagnosed as having panhypopituitarism secondary to anterior pituitary hypoplasia, shown on CT and MRI scans. This clinical picture partially resembles that of Hall-Pallister syndrome. However, the absence of some typical features such as craniofacial and limb abnormalities and, above all, hypothalamic hamar

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate changes in the distance between the distal rectal pouch and the perineum (pouch-perineum distance) from the birth day to the next day and to determine which day is better for diagnosis of a low-type imperforate anus in neonates.
METHODS: We reviewed medical records at our hospital from May 2003 to August 2015 and identified 9 neonates with a radiographically and surgically proven low-type imperforate anus and 9 with high/intermediate types of imperforate anus who had undergone sonography on both the birth day and the next day before the first surgical treatment. The so

Imperforate anus is a malformation of the child's anus. Parents' experiences of responsibility for care of the child may differ. The aim of this study was to evaluate a gender perspective on the extent to which mothers and fathers each take responsibility for the care of a child with high and intermediate imperforate anus. Parents of children with imperforate anus and two control groups of children and parents participated. Data collection with questionnaires focusing on responsibility was performed. In conclusion, our study revealed additional evidence of unevenly divided parental responsibil

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to explore the relationships between stigma, social support, and distress in caregivers of children with imperforate anus (IA) and determine whether social support mediates the relationship between stigma and distress.
DESIGN AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in three tertiary children's hospitals in Eastern China. Primary caregivers completed the Social Support Scale and the Chinese versions of the Parent Stigma Scale and Kessler Psychological Distress Scale, and provided their demographic information. The children's demographic and clini

Neonatal hypocalcemia and congenital heart defects has been known as the first clinical manifestation of the chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS). However, because of its wide clinical spectrum, diagnosis of 22q11DS can be delayed in children without classic symptoms. We report the case of a girl with the history of imperforate anus but without neonatal hypocalcemia or major cardiac anomaly, who was diagnosed for 22q11DS at the age of 11 after the onset of overt hypocalcemia. She was born uneventfully from phenotypically normal Korean parents. Imperforate anus and partial cleft palat

Anal sphincter replacement is a treatment option for severe anal incontinence that is not amenable to direct repair. We describe the unusual case of a 25-year-old male who has been successfully treated by implantable artificial sphincter for severe anal incontinence caused by imperforate anus and concomitant short-bowel syndrome. In early life, the patient underwent several surgical procedures, including a perineal colostomy for a high imperforate anus associated with a rectourethral fistula. At aged 21 years, he underwent a subtotal small-bowel resection and a restorative jejunotransverse ana

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic findings of levator muscle and the efficacy of laparoscopic muscle stimulator (LMS) in infants with high imperforate anus have not been reported.
METHODS: Twelve patients underwent laparoscopically assisted anorectoplasty for high imperforate anus. Following laparoscopic dissection of the distal rectum and division of the fistula, levator muscles in the pelvic floor were stimulated with a 5-mm-diameter LMS. Dilatation was done by inserting a guidewire and balloon catheter through the center of the levator muscle sling and muscle complex. Rectal pull-through and anasto

This paper describes an unusual association of aspermia and untreatable, chronic testicular pain in a young man who underwent 14 surgical interventions for an imperforate anus. Physical examination and ultrasonography revealed left epididymal and vas enlargement, normal-sized testes, tubular ectasia of the left rete testis and a small intraprostatic paramedian left cyst. Retrograde ejaculation and urogenital infections were excluded, and the FSH and karyotype results were normal. The patient gave his consent to an exploratory intervention with possible radical left orchiectomy. The patency of
