Myopia-aphakia. II. Vitreous and peripheral retina.

Biomicroscopical examination of the vitreous and peripheral retina was performed on 103 aphakic eyes with myopia of at least -6-0 dioptres. Retinal breaks were found in 19 eyes (18-4 per cent). Posterior vitreous detachment was present in all but one of the eyes. The high prevalence of retinal breaks in aphakic eyes with high myopia is compatible with the high incidence of retinal detachment in such eyes.

Central corneal thickness: congenital cataracts and aphakia.

PURPOSE: To evaluate central corneal thickness (CCT) in normal children (controls) and in those with cataracts, pseudophakia, and aphakia. DESIGN: Prospective, observational case series. METHODS: CCT was measured in 369 eyes of 223 children. Subjects with glaucoma, anterior segment abnormalities, or intraocular pressure of more than 30 mm Hg were excluded. Group means were compared for controls and for eyes with pediatric cataracts, pseudophakia, and aphakia. RESULTS: The mean CCT of eyes with cataracts was more than that of controls (574 +/- 54 microm [n = 46] and 552 +/- 38 microm [n = 23…

Secondary intraocular lens implantation for pediatric aphakia.

PURPOSE: We sought to report the outcome of secondary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in children. METHODS: This was a retrospective case review. RESULTS: A total of 77 eyes were identified. An average age at secondary implantation was 7.8 +/- 5.0 years, whereas the average age at primary cataract surgery was 1.5 +/- 2.6 years. Average follow-up was 2.7 +/- 1.9 years. Thirty eyes received a hydrophobic acrylic IOL implantation whereas 47 eyes received a PMMA IOL. The sites of fixation for implanted IOLs were as follows: anterior-chamber (n = 6), sulcus (n = 42), in-the-bag (n = 14), opti

Extended wear contact lenses in pediatric aphakia.

A 100% silicone polymer contact lens can be used successfully for extended wear in pediatric aphakia. Compared to a hydrogel extended wear contact lens, the silicone lens has several advantages. These include easier handling, a less traumatic fitting procedure for the child, fluorescein use for evaluation of the lens-cornea relationship and a lower loss rate. Bacterial and preservative contamination are minimized due to the lower water content. The silicone lens appears to be safe, having no permanent adverse effects on the cornea. It would be more advantageous if the lens could be obtained in…

Reverse Galilean telescopic spectacles in unilateral aphakia.

Minimizing aniseikonia in unilateral aphakia is often a difficult task. A case is presented in which a patient preferred a reverse Galilean telescopic spectacle of his own design to a contact lens. The design of the spectacles and the patient's visual performance with them are described. A reverse Galilean telescopic spectacle should not be excluded from the therapeutic alternatives in unilateral aphakia.

[Uniocular aphakia--conventional contact lenses and aniseikonia].

Ehrich and Kolbegger show in their papers that aniseikonia should not prevent binocular functions in a uniocular aphakia. This is contrary to our own experiences. In this paper we suggest that the results of Ehrich and Kolbegger must be worse in spite of their final conclusions. Their hypotheses are discussed.

[Binocular confusion in unilateral aphakia (author's transl)].

The five symptoms of binocular confusion of the unilateral aphakic patient are described. In day vision, without strabismus and without correction, the image of the aphakic eye considerbly disturbs binocular vision, though the vision is less than 20/400 (first symptom). In night traffic the uncorrected unilateral aphakic patient sees very striking light circles and within those circles of glittering dots around bright light sources of cars or around blinking indicators and stoplights (fifth symptom). The five disturbing symptoms of binocular confusion can be positivity eliminated by an appropr

Reanalysis of refractive growth in pediatric pseudophakia and aphakia.

BACKGROUND: The current model of refractive growth in children (RRG2) is calculated as the slope of aphakic refraction at the spectacle plane versus the logarithm of adjusted age. However, this model fails in infants because of the optical effect of vertex distance of a spectacle lens on the effective power at the cornea. In this study, we developed a new model of refractive growth (RRG3) that eliminates the optical effect of vertex distance on the RRG2 model. METHODS: We calculated RRG3 values for pseudophakic and aphakic eyes previously analyzed for RRG2. Inclusion criteria were age ≤10 yea

Parenting stress in the infant aphakia treatment study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate parenting stress following infants' cataract extraction surgery, and to determine if levels of stress differ between 2 treatments for unilateral congenital cataract in a randomized clinical trial. METHODS: At surgery, an intraocular lens (IOL) was implanted or children were left aphakic, treated with contact lens (CL). Stress measures were administered 3 months after surgery and at the first visit after the visual acuity (VA) assessment done at 12 months of age. RESULTS: Caregivers in the IOL group reported higher levels of stress than those in the CL group 3 months af

Aniridia associated with congenital aphakia and secondary glaucoma.

We report a case of aniridia associated with congenital aphakia and secondary glaucoma. A 35-year-old male presented with aniridia, congenital aphakia and secondary glaucoma in both eyes. After an unsuccessful medical management, he underwent trabeculectomy with mitomycin C and anterior vitrectomy under local anesthesia in his left eye. Postoperatively, at the end of six months, intraocular pressure (IOP) in his left eye was controlled without medications. This case highlights the rare association of aniridia with congenital aphakia and secondary glaucoma.
