[Arachnoid cyst associated with pyloric stenosis in a young boy].

An unusual association between an arachnoid cyst and a decompensated pyloric stenosis in a three years-old boy is presented. The little patient was admitted into hospital with haematemesis, melena, influenced generally condition and acute posthemorrhagic anaemia following aspirin intake for hypertermia. Specific intensive care was successful and the little patient was discharged but without an upper digestive endoscopy(parents refusal, technical reasons). After one week he returned with progressive worsening vomitings and an intracranial hypertension was suspected. CT documented an arachnoid c

An unusual case of retrobulbar arachnoid cyst and its management.

Arachnoid cysts are collection of cerebrospinal fluid contained inside a cavity lined by leptomeninges. It constitutes 1% of all intracranial tumours mostly present in the middle cranial fossa. Retrobulbar arachnoid cyst in elderly persons are a rare occurrence. We report a rare case of retrobulbar arachnoid cyst with ophthalmic manifestations and its effective management. CT-guided aspiration of the cyst and subsequent cytological and biochemical test revealed an arachnoid cyst. Patient is on a 5-year follow up without recurrence and improvement of the vision in the affected eye.

Arachnoid cyst resulting in sixth nerve palsy in a child.

A 2 year old presented with incomitant esotropia and abduction deficit consistent with sixth nerve palsy. Neuroimaging revealed an arachnoid cyst on the left. Neurosurgical shunting followed by strabismus surgery relieved the abduction deficit and esotropia. An arachnoid cyst may be a rare cause of acquired sixth nerve palsy and strabismus in children.

Posttraumatic intraventricular arachnoid cyst accompanied by pseudomeningoencephalocele in a child.

Growing skull fracture (GSF) is a rare complication of head trauma. A posttraumatic intraventricular arachnoid cyst (AC), neither isolated nor accompanied by a GSF has not been reported previously. A seven-year-old girl was admitted after a severe head injury with a separated right parieto-occipital fracture and contusion. She responded well to conservative therapy. Seven weeks after discharge, she was re-admitted with a large parieto-occipital pseudomeningoencephalocele due to herniation of cerebrospinal fluid and neural tissue to the subgaleal space through the widened fracture defect, an ex

Spontaneous acute subdural hematoma contralateral to an arachnoid cyst.

Arachnoid cysts (AC) are extra-cerebral cerebrospinal fluid collections of unknown origin. They correspond to 1% of all intracranial nontraumatic space-occupying lesions and appear more frequently in the middle fossa (50%). More than 25% of these cysts are incidental findings and the majority of patients are asymptomatic. Seizures, intracranial hypertension signs, neurological deficits, macrocrania, developmental delay and bulging of the skull are the main signs and symptoms of the lesion. AC rupture and bleeding are rare, usually occurring in young adults and associated with trauma. The risk …

[A case of symptomatic arachnoid cyst of the occipital convexity in an adult].

Symptomatic arachnoid cyst in an adult patient is rare. We present a case of a 51-year-old female with an arachnoid cyst of the right occipital convexity who developed homonymous hemianopsia. She had complained of numbness in the limbs at the age of 47 and based on MRI was diagnosed with a cystic space-occupying lesion in the right occipital convexity. After being under observation for four and a half years, she complained of headache and visual disturbance, at which time we diagnosed growth of the cyst. On ophthalmologic examination, homonymous hemianopsia was demonstrated. She underwent memb

Supratentorial arachnoid cyst mimicking a Ménière's disease attack.

Arachnoid cysts (AC) often present with symptoms depending on their anatomical location within the skull; while supratentorial cysts grow causing relatively few symptoms, infratentorial ones may impair liquor circulation at the level of the fourth ventricle, giving rise to intracranial hypertension, or may stretch the complex nerve network in the cerebello-pontine angle. We report the singular clinical history of a 54-year-old male, who suddenly began to feel dizzy while sitting at his workplace, complaining of left tinnitus and aural fullness, in a classic clinical picture of Ménière's diseas…

[Arachnoid cyst and tension headache: symptom or accidental finding?].

We report a 34 year old male patient presenting with occipital headache and bilateral shoulder and neck pain. Cranial MRT discloses a large arachnoid cyst ventral to the medulla oblongata. The cyst displaces the caudal medulla oblongata dorsally to an angle of almost 90 degrees without causing myelopathy. Physical examination reveals normal neurological findings without any sign of brainstem lesions or lesions of the medulla oblongata. Orthopedic evaluation shows mild functional abnormalities as expected in tension headache. Multiple electrophysiologic investigations such as motor-, somatosens

[Suprasellar arachnoid cyst associated with syringomyelia. Case report].

We present a case of suprasellar arachnoid cyst which was revealed by visual impairement and hypopituitarism. Neuroradiological imaging showed the peculiar association of the suprasellar cyst with cerebellar tonsillar herniation and a large asymptomatic cervical syringomyelic cavity. Surgical treatment of the suprasellar cyst allowed the reduction of both the cyst and the syrinx. A common pathophysiological mechanism of these lesions is discussed. We suggest the possibility that an initial obstruction of the basal cisterns caused the suprasellar cyst formation which led to medullar cavity form

[A retrosellar arachnoid cyst as a rare cause of homonymous hemianopsia].

BACKGROUND: Arachnoidal cysts are cystic lesions filled with a cerebrospinal-fluid-like content within the leptomeninges. Usually arachnoidal cysts represent a congenital malformation. Clinical signs (increased intracranial pressure and/or neurological defects) may become apparent in children or young adults. PATIENT: A sixteen year old boy was referred to our outpatient clinic because of blurred vision in both eyes since five days. The patient complained of cephalgia and of an increased sleep requirement in the last two weeks. Morphological findings were within the normal range. The visual a

[Giant intraventricular arachnoid cyst: report of 2 cases].

INTRODUCTION: It is very unusual to find cysts situated intraventricularly. Only 24 cases have been described to date in the literature. CLINICAL CASES: In this paper we present two new cases considering that because of their exceptional size they deserve to be called 'giant'. The two patients had been diagnosed as having epilepsy during childhood or youth. No neuroradiological studies had ever been done. The cause of hospital admission in the first case was headache and vomiting and in the second case a convulsive crisis. We did cerebral CT scans in both cases and a MR control scan in the se

Asymptomatic sacral arachnoid cyst in a patient with ankylosing spondylitis.

A sacral arachnoid cyst was found incidentally in a patient with ankylosing spondylitis. The clinical manifestations were perithecal bony erosions and thecal sac displacement while no associated neurological deficit was detected. This peculiar situation is of special interest as cauda equina syndrome invariably presented in such clinical complex. The pathogenesis of the arachnoid cyst remains unclear. And surgical intervention is only indicated in patients with evidence of nerve root compression.

[Diagnosis and treatment of central nervous system arachnoid cyst].

Arachnoid cysts of the CNS are uncommon lesions of considerable interest and importance, the origins and exact nature of which remain uncertain (congenital, posttraumatic, infectious or other). They form a well defined pathological entity and account for less than 1% of all CNS space-occupying lesions. Their membranous walls resemble slightly thickened arachnoid with CSF-like fluid. They are loosely attached to the dura mater and cerebral cortex, and are often adherent along the base of the skull or falx or located next to midline of the posterior fossa. A variety of clinical problems may be p…

A case of intraventricular arachnoid cyst. How should it be treated?

A rare case of arachnoid cyst in the trigone of a lateral ventricle is reported. The patient was an 8-year-old boy who had had four episodes of convulsions prior to admission. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a cystic lesion containing fluid resembling cerebrospinal fluid. Although he received a cyst-peritoneal shunt, the lesion did not decrease in size. Direct removal of the cyst was then scheduled. The entire cyst was finally removed, although it was firmly attached to the choroid plexus. The enlarged trigone gradually decreased in postoperative CT.

[A case of quadrigeminal cistern arachnoid cyst associated with hydrocephalus].

A case of quadrigeminal cistern arachnoid cyst associated with hydrocephalus is reported. A 1-year-old girl was admitted to our service on July 31, 1984, because of mental retardation and an enlarged head. She was born of a full-term pregnancy and normal vaginal delivery without prenatal complications. Progressive increase in her head circumference was noticed at the age of 6 months by her family physician. On admission she was found to be a well-nourished infant with a head circumference of 56 cm, bulging anterior fontanelle and mental retardation. Marked dilatation of the lateral ventricles

An arachnoid cyst in an 8-year-old boy with neurofibromatosis.

Although associations of a variety of developmental abnormalities of the brain and the spinal cord with neurofibromatosis have been reported, association of a cerebral arachnoid cyst with neurofibromatosis is extremely rare. We report the second case of this association in an 8-year-old Japanese boy.

[Suprasellar arachnoid cyst--report of a case (author's transl)].

A 4-year-old boy with suprasellar arachnoid cyst was reported. At the age of 30-month-old his aunt was aware of his squint. During the observation by ophthalmologists from the age of 1y. to 3y., enlargement of the head and impairment of the visual acuity were manifested. Cranial CT scan revealed the enlargement of the ventricular system and a round low density area located superior to the sella. Absorption coefficient of the lesion was similar to that of the cerebrospinal fluid. No abnormal contrast enhancement was seen. Examination revealed the head circumference of 53.3 cm larger than double
