Dental specialists are frequently confronted with the task of attempting to determine whether a cause and effect relationship exists between a short or restricting lingual frenum (ankyloglossia or tongue-tie) and a specific oral motor dysfunction. Because there is no standardized definition of what constitutes a condition of tongue-tie, the dental practitioner is often unsure as to the appropriate course of action with a patient with suspected ankyloglossia. This paper describes clinical measures that permit quantifying several anatomic and functional aspects of the tongue. Such baseline analy

The phonemic substitution errors of ten apractic speakers were analyzed to investigate the effects of markedness on speech production patterns. Results revealed that: more errors were produced on phonemes high in markedness; more changes in markedness were from marked to unmarked than unmarked to marked; and errors and directional changes in markedness were positively correlated with ease of articulation. The findings were interpreted as a systematic effort by the apractic speakers to reduce the complexity of articulatory gestures required to produce phonemes.

Speech difficulties in children can impair communication, social development, and academic success, often contributing to anxiety. This case report highlights a novel approach combining therapy with hypnosis, patient-recorded videos, and formative physician feedback to improve a child's speech clarity and confidence. In this report, a nine-year-old girl with longstanding articulation difficulties participated in hypnosis sessions and created cooking demonstration videos. These videos served as tools for self-assessment and for receiving targeted physician feedback on speech pacing and clarity.

The Dutch cleft speech evaluation test (DCSET) has been implemented by the speech-language pathologists nationwide in the Netherlands since 2003, but the inter- and intrarater reliability was unknown. Two speech-language pathologists experienced in evaluating cleft speech assessed audio recordings of 20 children with cleft speech using the DCSET, and reassessed the recordings 2 weeks later. Intra- and interrater reliability was calculated, but found to be unacceptable after the first phase of this study using audio recordings. Following consensus training and some modifications in the scoring

To evaluate the orthographic and phonological processing skills of developmental dyslexics, we (a) examined their abilities to exploit properties of orthographic redundancy and (b) tested whether their phonological deficit extends to spelling-to-sound connections for large-grain size units such as syllables. To assess the processing skills in dyslexics, we utilized the illusory conjunction paradigm to investigate the nature of reading units in French dyslexic and control children matched in reading age. In control children, reading units were defined by both orthographic redundancy and phonolo

Across languages, children with developmental dyslexia have a specific difficulty with the neural representation of the sound structure (phonological structure) of speech. One likely cause of their difficulties with phonology is a perceptual difficulty in auditory temporal processing (Tallal, 1980). Tallal (1980) proposed that basic auditory processing of brief, rapidly successive acoustic changes is compromised in dyslexia, thereby affecting phonetic discrimination (e.g. discriminating /b/ from /d/) via impaired discrimination of formant transitions (rapid acoustic changes in frequency and in

Impairments of the lexical and the nonlexical reading route were examined for German-speaking dyslexic readers by measuring accuracy and speed of phonological and orthographic lexical decisions. Different from English-based findings, we found little difficulty with the phonological distinction between pseudohomophones and nonwords, but a major difficulty with the orthographic distinction between words and pseudohomophones. Subtyping identified pure surface dyslexia cases but no case of pure phonological dyslexia. Dyslexic speed impairments were traced to three loci in the dual-route model: an

The present study explored the double-deficit hypothesis (DDH) in a sample of 146 college students with and without reading disabilities (RD). The results indicated that although both phonological awareness (PA) and visual naming speed (VNS) contributed to performance on measures of decoding and comprehension, their relative contribution was influenced both by the nature of the stimulus (word vs. nonword vs. text) and by the conditions of the task (timed vs. untimed). Similar results were obtained using an individual differences approach, or when between-group comparisons were made of individu

This report addresses the efficacy of treatment for functional phonological disorders in children. The definition of phonological disorders and their incidence and prevalence are first presented. The impact of this disorder on the lives of children and the role that speech-language pathologists play in treating this disorder are then discussed. Evidence of the positive outcome of phonological treatment is reviewed, with particular emphasis on treatment procedures that have been deemed effective, the specific effects of these treatments on improving intelligibility, and comparisons between trea

The effect of treatment on errors in consonant clusters and in ambisyllabic consonants were investigated in two adults with histories of developmental phonological problems. Using a multiple baseline across behaviors, ambisyllabic consonant errors were treated in bisyllabic words and consonant cluster errors were treated in two different cluster classes. Results indicated that treatment, consisting of a sound-referenced rebus approach, affected change in production of trained words as well as generalization to untrained words for targeted behaviors.

Twenty second-grade lisping children were taught to articulate /s/ and /z/ correctly during three training sessions. Two weeks later, each child was asked to invite three classmates to a fourth session in which the classmates could earn tokens contingent upon the target child's correct articulation of /s/ and /z/ sounds. A response cost procedure was initiated with one group of 10 target children and the invited peers. In addition to tokens given for correct responses, tokens were removed following each of the target child's incorrect /s/ or /z/ responses. This condition resulted in the presen

Although a history of cleft palate is the most common cause of velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD), there are other disorders that can also cause hypernasality and/or nasal emission. These include other structural anomalies of the velopharyngeal valve (velopharyngeal insufficiency), neurophysiological disorders that result in inadequate velopharyngeal movement (velopharyngeal incompetence), and even faulty articulation placement in the pharynx (velopharyngeal mislearning). Unfortunately, individuals with non-cleft causes of hypernasality and/or nasal emission do not typically present at a cleft p

CRPS 1 is a chronic pain disorder with an as yet not fully understood pathophysiology. The diagnosis is clinical, and the disorder is characterised primarily by pain and skin changes. We present a patient with an aggressively spreading CRPS 1 due to a minor trauma to the right foot, which led to bilateral knee ex-articulation 11 years later. This case report demonstrates the potentially devastating effects of this disorder and the difficulties in treating it.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of tongue-tie division (frenuloplasty/ frenulotomy) for speech articulation disorder in children with ankyloglossia (tongue-tie).
METHODS: Articulation test was done in five children (3-8 years old) with speech problems who underwent tongue-tie division. The test consisted of 50 pictures of common Japanese words with 2-3 syllables. The patients were interviewed by a speech therapist and asked to pronounce what the picture card showed. Misarticulations of substitution, omission, and distortion were assessed. The preoperative

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The purpose of the study is a retrospective comparison of results of the two-stage revision total hip arthroplasty using a non-articulating and an articulating spacer to treat periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). Two basic hypotheses are evaluated: (1) the clinical outcomes of the patients treated with "hand made" articulating cement spacer are better than in non-articulating patient's group in two-stage revision for PJI of the total hip arthroplasty and (2) PJI recurrence is higher in the group of patients treated with an articulating spacer group. Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is often characterized by an ability to produce phonemes in isolation, but not in more complex phonetic sequences. This has led to the hypothesis that articulator coordination is impaired in CAS, This study explored whether coordination between the lips and jaw during speech production is impaired in this group. We used two methods to investigate interarticulatory relationships. Cross-correlation analysis directly measures spatial-temporal coupling of articulator movements. The spatiotemporal index (STI; Smith, Goffman, Zelaznik, Ying, & MeGillem, 1995) measur

This research note presents an acoustic field distribution analyser with sample visualisations, applied to the study of typical and disordered laterality and nasality in speech - an area lacking fully non-invasive diagnostic tools. A portable system was developed by combining a custom circular microphone array with software for temporal, spectral and spatial speech analysis in both horizontal and vertical planes. The array comprises 16 micro-electro-mechanical microphones equipped with pulse-density modulators, along with a laser distance sensor that focuses the acoustic beam on the facial con

Knee motion involves intricate coordination among various anatomical structures. Effective treatment of knee pathologies requires precise identification of deformities and accurate surgical interventions, which often involve rapid tissue modification based on established knowledge. However, motion disorders are typically detected long after surgery. To address this, a simulation environment is proposed to plan and analyze surgical impacts on knee motion. Comprehensive knee joint modeling is crucial for a successful simulation. Clinically accepted movement procedures based on passive knee motio
