Efficacy of calcium sulfate particles combined with allogeneic bone grafting on bone defects after surgery for benign bone tumors of the extremities.

BACKGROUND: Benign extremity bone tumors significantly impact patients' quality of life. While autologous bone grafting increases surgical trauma and donor-site complications, allogeneic bone grafting carries risks of infection and rejection. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of calcium sulfate (CS) particles combined with allogeneic bone grafting for bone defects following benign extremity bone tumor surgery. METHODS: This retrospective analysis included 121 patients treated at Honghui Hospital (Jan 2018-Dec 2020). The control group (CG, n=60) received CS artificial bone grafts, while the

Effects of a novel medial meniscus implant on the knee compartments: imaging and biomechanical aspects.

The altered biomechanical function of the knee following partial meniscectomy results in ongoing articular cartilage overload, which may lead to progressive osteoarthritis (OA). An artificial medial meniscus implant (NUsurface® Meniscus Implant, Active Implants LLC., Memphis, TN, USA) was developed to mimic the native meniscus and may provide an effective long-term solution for OA patients, alleviate pain, and restore joint function. The goal of the current study was to investigate the potential effect of an artificial medial meniscus implant on the function of the lateral compartment of the k

Effect of radiation on age at menopause among atomic bomb survivors.

Exposure to ionizing radiation has been thought to induce ovarian failure and premature menopause. Proximally exposed female atomic bomb survivors were reported to experience menopause immediately after the exposure more often than those who were distally exposed. However, it remains unclear whether such effects were caused by physical injury and psychological trauma or by direct effects of radiation on the ovaries. The objective of this study was to see if there are any late health effects associated with the exposure to atomic bomb radiation in terms of age at menopause in a cohort of 21,259

Artificial Feeding of Hard Ticks Using Silicone Membranes.

Artificial tick feeding systems (ATFS) provide an ethical alternative to using experimental animals for feeding ticks. Silicone membrane-based systems enable controlled feeding of diverse Ixodid tick species and life stages while supporting the 3R principles to replace, reduce, and refine animal use. Here, we present a protocol for silicone membrane-based ATFS, outlining practical steps, essential components, and key troubleshooting considerations.

Beyond Diffusion: Clinical Perspectives on Online Hemodiafiltration and Medium Cut-Off Dialyzers.

Online hemodiafiltration (OL-HDF) and medium cut-off (MCO) dialyzers augment diffusion-based hemodialysis (HD) with convective clearance to enhance removal of middle molecules. In large-scale randomized trials, OL-HDF appears to reduce all-cause, cardiovascular, and infection-related mortality compared with high-flux HD, particularly when convection volumes exceed 23 L per session. Data suggest a graded effect; higher achieved convection volumes are associated with greater benefit, and advantages have been observed across the analyzed subgroups. Evidence also indicates better preservation of p

Do Not Lose Your Nerve, Be Callus: Insights Into Neural Regulation of Fracture Healing.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Fractures are a prominent form of traumatic injury and shall continue to be for the foreseeable future. While the inflammatory response and the cells of the bone marrow microenvironment play significant roles in fracture healing, the nervous system is also an important player in regulating bone healing. RECENT FINDINGS: Considerable evidence demonstrates a role for nervous system regulation of fracture healing in a setting of traumatic injury to the brain. Although many of the impacts of the nervous system on fracture healing are positive, pain mediated by the nervous syste

Residual and sound limb hip strength distinguish between sedentary and nonsedentary adults with transtibial amputation.

Following a transtibial amputation (TTA), physical activity has known benefits for health and quality of life. Adults post-TTA, however, demonstrate reduced physical activity, predisposing them to adverse health outcomes. Identifying adults at the risk of sedentarism post-TTA via commonly used, objective clinical measures may enhance clinical decisions, including prosthesis prescription. The study's purpose was to determine whether residual and sound limb hip strength distinguishes between sedentary and nonsedentary adults post-TTA. A secondary analysis of a cross-sectional dataset (n = 44) wa

Artificial Intelligence Methodologies Applied to Technologies for Screening, Diagnosis and Care of the Diabetic Foot: A Narrative Review.

Diabetic foot syndrome is a multifactorial pathology with at least three main etiological factors, i.e., peripheral neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease, and infection. In addition to complexity, another distinctive trait of diabetic foot syndrome is its insidiousness, due to a frequent lack of early symptoms. In recent years, it has become clear that the prevalence of diabetic foot syndrome is increasing, and it is among the diabetes complications with a stronger impact on patient's quality of life. Considering the complex nature of this syndrome, artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies

The ongoing quest for the first total artificial heart as destination therapy.

Many patients with end-stage heart disease die because of the scarcity of donor hearts. A total artificial heart (TAH), an implantable machine that replaces the heart, has so far been successfully used in over 1,700 patients as a temporary life-saving technology for bridging to heart transplantation. However, after more than six decades of research on TAHs, a TAH that is suitable for destination therapy is not yet available. High complication rates, bulky devices, poor durability, poor biocompatibility and low patient quality of life are some of the major drawbacks of current TAH devices that

Artificial intelligence in the diagnosis and management of colorectal cancer liver metastases.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common malignancy worldwide, with approximately 50% of patients developing colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM) during the follow-up period. Management of CRLM is best achieved via a multidisciplinary approach and the diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making process is complex. In order to optimize patients' survival and quality of life, there are several unsolved challenges which must be overcome. These primarily include a timely diagnosis and the identification of reliable prognostic factors. Furthermore, to allow optimal treatment options, a

Toward improving residual limb climate within prostheses for persons with lower limb loss: a technical note.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with lower limb loss often wear a gel liner and enclosed socket for connecting to a terminal prosthetic device. Historically, a significant limitation to traditional liners and sockets is that they are thermal insulators, thereby trapping heat and moisture within, which can lead to numerous deleterious issues, including loss of suspension and residual limb skin problems, and, in turn, reductions in mobility, function, and overall quality of life. To mitigate these issues, new approaches are therefore needed to enhance the residual limb climate (e.g. breathability and ai
