BACKGROUND: An increasing number of adults over 60 years old are presenting with requests for treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the prevalence of ADHD in older adults in geriatrics is unknown. Further, comorbid bipolar disorder and adult ADHD are likely underrecognized with many patients only receiving treatment for one of these conditions. The occurrence of bipolar disorder with geriatric onset ADHD is unknown.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 64-year-old Hispanic woman with a psychiatric history of bipolar I disorder (diagnosed in early adulthood) was diagnosed with

OBJECTIVES: To study the association between oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and parenting style in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
METHODS: A case-control study was performed on 482 children with ADHD, among whom 322 did not have ODD (simple ADHD group) and 160 had ODD (ADHD+ODD group). General demographic data and the Parenting Style Scale assessment scores were collected from the two groups. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify the association between parenting style and ODD in children with ADHD.
RESULTS: There was no signifi

BACKGROUND: Previous studies reported controversial results regarding the association between allergic disorders and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)/autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The aim of this article was to investigate whether allergic disorders are associated with ADHD/ASD in a large cohort of pediatric patients.
METHODS: A retrospective study using the pediatric (0-18 year) database (ICD-9-CM codes) of Clalit Health Services during the years (2000-2018). Diagnosis of all disorders was made by specialist physicians.
RESULTS: A total of 117 022 consecutive non-selective

The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the pharmacological options available to treat patients diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and anxiety disorder, for generating evidence on the safest, most-effective and tolerable pharmacotherapy. To this end, a systematic search was performed in three electronic databases (Medline, Scopus and Directory of Open Access Journals; December 2017). Randomized, double-blind, parallel-design clinical trials evaluating the efficacy, safety or tolerability of therapies for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and

Neuroimaging research about social anxiety disorder (SAD) points to hyperactivity in the fear circuit and altered connectivity between the fear circuit and the intrinsic connectivity networks that modulate it. We investigated intrinsic functional connectivity changes in SAD patients by taking into consideration the commonly overlooked comorbidity of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We compared intrinsic functional connectivity alterations in 16 patients with pure SAD, 18 patients with SAD and comorbid ADHD and 21 healthy controls using seed-to-voxel functional connectivity anal

Comorbidity of bipolar disorder (BD) with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is frequent. The management of comorbid ADHD and BD is complicated by the risk of induction of (hypo) mania by the medications used for ADHD treatment. Earlier reports in children and adolescents with ADHD-BD suggest that the possibility of (hypo) mania induction is low when atomoxetine is used along mood stabilizers or antipsychotics. Here, we report induction of hypomania by atomoxetine when used for the treatment of comorbid ADHD in a BD patient while on prophylactic treatment with mood stabilizers. Th

Chronic tic disorders (TD) are consistently found to have high rates of comorbidity with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The purpose of this study is to compare the severity of TD only to TD with comorbid OCD or ADHD based on severity of tics, measures of psychopathology and additional comorbid diagnoses. Baseline data from 158 youth with a chronic TD who participated in two longitudinal studies were examined. Fifty-three percent (N = 85) of the youth also met criteria for a diagnosis of OCD, 38.6 % (n = 61) met criteria for ADHD and 24.

We report the case of a young male with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, eating problems and overweight, and mild mental retardation. Karyotype analysis detected an apparently balanced translocation: t(1;2)(p34.1;q21.1) de novo. Array comparative genomic hybridization analysis defined a de-novo cryptic deletion of 2q21.1-q22.2 bands. The deletion, here first associated with this complex phenotype, encompasses several genes with a putative role in different domains of behavioral control and neurocognitive functions; their deregulated expression may influe

OBJECTIVES: There is growing interest in the role of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in neuropsychiatric disorders and there is some evidence that the HPA axis may be underfunctional in behaviorally disturbed children. However, co-morbidity is common in childhood neuropsychiatric disorders. Stimulant medication is widely used in the treatment of Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and can increase cortisol secretion when given acutely. We therefore set out to determine the whether salivary cortisol would be reduced in a group of children with ADHD/ODD (Oppositional-de

Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant drug released in the United States in 1993 for use as adjunctive therapy in refractory partial epilepsy. The mechanism of action of gabapentin is unknown, but the drug has very favorable pharmacokinetics and a good safety profile, which allows its use in high-risk patients. Several reports have described the successful use of gabapentin for bipolar disorders in adults, but there are no controlled studies in the use of gabapentin in children and adolescents. We describe a 12-year-old boy with a history of attention deficient hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), reading

Aggressive behaviors are frequently observed in patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, and pervasive developmental disorders. Several theories have been postulated to explain the etiology of aggression in these disorders, but no one theory can account for all the different types of aggressive behaviors observed. Numerous uncontrolled studies with small sample sizes have produced mixed results of pharmacologic agents now being used to treat aggression. This article discusses the phenomenology, etiology, assessment, and pharmacologic treatment of aggressive beh

Although as many as 50% of patients with Tourette's syndrome (TS) also meet diagnostic criteria for Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), until recently little attention has been paid to ADHD symptoms in the assessment of therapeutic outcome of TS or patients with chronic motor tics (CMT). Because antipsychotics are of limited value in controlling the symptoms of ADHD and stimulants can exacerbate tics, alternative treatments for patients with chronic tic disorder (CTD) (TS or CMT) plus ADHD (CTD+ADHD) patients are direly needed. We examined the efficacy of the tricyclic antidepress

This study examined auditory processing (AP) and selective attention in adolescents with cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and controls. Participants were 61 adolescents (CDS: n = 20; ADHD: n = 20; ages 12-18) recruited from a child psychiatry clinic, and 21 controls recruited from other hospital outpatient clinics. AP was assessed with the experimental Auditory Selective Attention Task, which included monaural and dichotic listening trials measuring accuracy and reaction time (RT). Executive and attentional symptoms were evaluated with th

Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were compared with non-ADHD psychiatric patients and normal controls on objective measures of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity to determine the specificity of these symptoms to ADHD. Inattention and impulsivity were assessed using a continuous performance test, and activity was measured using solid state actigraphs. Both patient groups were inattentive relative to normals, but were indistinguishable from each other. However, the ADHD group was more active than both non-ADHD patients and normals, who did not differ from ea

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with ADHD have difficulty providing precise estimates of time. Nevertheless, they may still be able to harness temporally predictable information to guide behavior and regulate action control. We therefore examined whether temporal cueing improves impulse control or, conversely, exacerbates impulsive tendencies, in adults with ADHD.
METHODS: Adults with ADHD and matched controls performed a temporally cued Simon task. Target onset time was either predictable or unpredictable, and lateralized responses were either compatible or incompatible with target location. Analysi

UNLABELLED: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent and highly impacting neurodevelopmental disorders worldwide. Beyond its complexity, it’s a childhood-onset condition influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Among these, nutrition has emerged as a relevant modifiable factor, yet most studies have focused on isolated nutrients, overlooking dietary complex interplay. This study addresses that gap using a data-driven nutrient pattern approach. To identify nutrient patterns in children with ADHD and explore their association with behavioural symp

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder modulated by genetic and environmental factors. Approximately 20-55% of individuals with ADHD experience concurrent sleep disturbances, yet the dynamic relationship between the two and their shared genetic mechanisms remain unclear. This study analyzed 11,288 participants (52.1% male) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study using the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children. We found a robust positive correlation between ADHD and sleep traits, though ADHD medication weakened this relationship. Lat
