Development of a physiotherapy-led balance clinic: the Aintree model.

OBJECTIVE: To create a 'one-stop' clinic in which assessment, diagnosis, treatment and therapies for most patients presenting with balance and dizziness disorders are delivered simultaneously. METHODS: Patients triaged via referral letters were selected to attend the balance clinic, which is led by specialist balance physiotherapists. Patients were seen by an audiologist, and a 'balance' ENT consultant was available for joint consultations when required. Further details of the clinic set up are discussed. RESULTS: Over an 18-month period, 200 new 'dizzy' patients attended the clinic. Benign

Mitochondrial syndromic sensorineural hearing loss.

Mitochondrial diseases (MD) are a clinically heterogeneous group of disorders that arise as a result of dysfunction of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is often associated to mitochondrial dysfunctions both in syndromic, nonsyndromic forms. SNHL has been described in association to different mitochondrial multisystemic syndromes, often characterized by an important neuromuscular involvement. Because of the clinical relevance of the associated neurological symptoms, the occurrence of SNHL is often underestimated and undiagnosed. In this study we evaluated t

Educational management of children with cochlear implants.

During the last decade, the technology of assistive hearing devices for hearing-impaired children has improved significantly. Improvements in hearing aids and the introduction of cochlear implants and wearable tactile aids for children have made spoken language available to more deaf children and have changed the techniques for teaching listening and speaking skills. In June 1990, the Food and Drug Administration approved the Nucleus 22 channel cochlear implant for use with children. As a result, it is expected that more children will be implanted and, consequently, that the teachers and audio

Hearing Care Providers' Perspectives on the Utility of Datalogging Information.

Purpose The aim of the study was to learn (a) how datalogging information is being used in clinical practice by hearing care providers (HCPs) in the United States and (b) HCPs' opinions about how information collected through the hearing aids could be broadened in clinical application. Method A mixed-method approach was undertaken consisting of an online quantitative survey and qualitative structured telephone interviews. Survey data were analyzed using descriptives and chi-square analyses. The interview data were transcribed and analyzed using inductive content analysis. Results In total, 154

Otology: Hearing Loss.

Hearing loss is the cause of significant morbidity throughout the United States and the world. Because of numerous factors, such as ongoing noise exposure, poorly controlled chronic disease, and an aging population, the burden of hearing loss is expected to continue to increase. Hearing loss commonly is categorized as conductive, sensorineural, or mixed. The type of hearing loss can be determined through a combination of patient history and physical examination, and then confirmed with audiometry and tympanometry. Advanced imaging is not typically necessary, but it may be helpful in specific i

Persistent Tinnitus after Inhaled N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT).

This case report describes a 39-year-old male with remote history of polysubstance use disorder and depression who developed tinnitus after use of inhaled N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT). Although development of ear ringing was attributed to use on a single occasion, tinnitus occurred within the context of a larger self-experiment involving weekly microdoses of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). Distress and anxiety over the ear ringing prompted evaluation by an audiologist, primary care physician, and consultant psychopharmacologist. Tinnitus persisted for several months, although intensity and a

[Surgical treatment possibilities of middle ear hearing loss].

Otological surgery is performed under the operating microscope with special microinstruments. The introduction of new technical means such as the argon laser, equipped with a fiberoptic handpiece, and the sceeter microdrill have improved the results according to the statistic of Berne. An important aspect is the approach to the structures in the temporal bone. The classical retroauricular and endaural incisions are replaced whenever possible by the less traumatic transmeatal approach directly through the external ear canal without external skin lesion. Ear drum perforations and cholesteatomas

Management of the hearing impaired child with serous otitis media.

The majority of research and informative papers dealing with otitis media with effusion (OME) are concerned with normally hearing children who display a mild conductive hearing loss associated with the infection. In contrast, the target of our manuscript is the child who has a previously documented sensori-neural hearing loss that is complicated by the onset of a middle ear infection. It is our clinical experience that OME in the hearing impaired child must be treated aggressively in order to adequately override the additional loss that accompanies a middle ear infection. A number of our patie

Streamlining grommet pathways for otitis media with effusion and hearing loss in children: our experience.

BACKGROUND: Grommet insertion is a common surgical procedure in children. Long waiting times for grommet insertion are not unusual. This project aimed to streamline the process by introducing a pathway for audiologists to directly schedule children meeting National Institute for Health and Care Excellence Clinical Guideline 60 ('CG60') for grommet insertion.Method and resultsA period from June to November 2014 was retrospectively audited. Mean duration between the first audiology appointment and grommet insertion was 294.5 days (median = 310 days). Implementing the direct-listing pathway reduc…
