There has been very rapid progress in knowledge concerning Legionnaires' disease and the Legionella. Relatively simple and reliable diagnostic techniques are already available. A total of 252 rodents were trapped in the environs of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, over a two-year period, of which 221 were brown field rats (Arvicanthus niloticus). Only these were found positive (4.5%). Titers were detected against Leptospira interrogans, serovars australis, icterohaemorrhagiae, tarassovi and hardjo. In patients who undergo abdominal aortic operations, cultures have been recommended perioperatively to identify potential sources of graft infection. Bacteriologic monitoring was done in a group of patients receiving antibiotics prophylactically. Of 197 bowel bag cultures, 28 (14.2%) demonsrated small numbers of bacteria, usually Staphylococcus epidermidis, while of 31 aneurysm wall cultures, 7 (22.6%) grew bacteria. During a ten-year period, 61 infants with perforated necrotizing enterocolitis were managed by bowel resection, enterostomy, and intravenous antibiotics. Aerobic and anaerobic cultures were taken of venous blood, from the peritoneal cavity at operation, and of any subsequent wound and/or intraperitoneal infection.
