Factors influencing intimate partner controlling behaviour against rural women in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The widespread issue of gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa profoundly affects various aspects of life, necessitating government intervention for prevention. While numerous studies have found intimate partner controlling behaviour (IPCB) to be more prevalent in rural areas, the factors contributing to its high prevalence have not been unmasked. This study, therefore, investigates the factors influencing IPCB against rural women in South Africa. METHODS: The study was based on the 2016 South Africa Demographic and Health Survey (SADHS). Data was extracted for married rural

Methamphetamine and traumatic brain injury outcomes: an analysis of 29,416 patients from the national trauma data bank.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine (Meth) use is rising in the US. Most research focuses on severe TBI, neglecting milder cases. We evaluated Meth's impact on patient outcomes and hospital resource use across all TBI severities. METHODS: This study included National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) patients from 2017-2019, aged 18-54, with near-isolated TBI, a drug screen, and negative blood alcohol. Meth+ patients were compared to Meth- patients on demographics, injury severity, and outcomes using χ² and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests. RESULTS: Of 29,416 patients with TBI patients, 337 (1%) were Meth+. Meth+ pati

Protein targets & therapeutics in psoriasis: toward personalization.

Over 125 million individuals worldwide suffer from psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin condition that is immune-mediated. It is often linked to systemic comorbidities such psoriatic arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and mental health conditions. It is characterised by erythematous plaques, itching, and scaling. Psoriasis is caused by a complex interaction of environmental factors, genetic predisposition, and dysregulated immune responses, which leads to chronic inflammation and keratinocyte hyperproliferation. This review examines the treatment potential of important protein targets linked

Comparing Childhood Characteristics of Adopted and Non-adopted Individuals Deceased by Suicide.

OBJECTIVE: Across the globe more than 35,000 children a year are adopted by non-relatives, and some studies suggest that adopted individuals may be more vulnerable to developing mental disorders. To map the differences in suicide risk factors in adopted and non-adopted individuals, this study will compare the development of mental disorders as well as life events occurring before the age of 18 for both adopted and non-adopted individuals deceased by suicide. METHODS: This study included 13 adopted and 26 non-adopted individuals deceased by suicide as well as 26 non-adopted living control indi

Structural Prediction of Peptide-MHC Binding Modes.

The immune system is constantly protecting its host from the invasion of pathogens and the development of cancer cells. The specific CD8+ T-cell immune response against virus-infected cells and tumor cells is based on the T-cell receptor recognition of antigenic peptides bound to class I major histocompatibility complexes (MHC) at the surface of antigen presenting cells. Consequently, the peptide binding specificities of the highly polymorphic MHC have important implications for the design of vaccines, for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, and for personalized cancer immunotherapy. Australian consensus statements for the regulation, production and use of faecal microbiota transplantation in clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE: Faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has proved to be an extremely effective treatment for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection, and there is interest in its potential application in other gastrointestinal and systemic diseases. However, the recent death and episode of septicaemia following FMT highlights the need for further appraisal and guidelines on donor evaluation, production standards, treatment facilities and acceptable clinical indications. DESIGN: For these consensus statements, a 24-member multidisciplinary working group voted online and then convened in-perso

Current status and perspective of EBUS-TBNA.

In 2002, a new bronchoscope equipped with a convex type ultrasound probe on the tip was introduced into clinical practice. This convex probe endobronchial ultrasound (CP-EBUS) provides a long axis image of surrounding structures of the major airway. The CP-EBUS combined with a dedicated biopsy needle allows real-time endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) of mediastinal and hilar lymph nodes. Samples obtained from EBUS-TBNA can be used for pathological diagnosis including immunohistochemistry. EBUS-TBNA is now being performed worldwide for several indicati

Association between personality, lifestyle behaviors, and cardiovascular diseases in type 2 diabetes mellitus: a population-based cohort study of UK Biobank data.

INTRODUCTION: Various strategies aim to better assess risks and refine prevention for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), who vary in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. However, the prognostic value of personality and its association with lifestyle factors remain elusive. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We identified 8794 patients with T2DM from the UK Biobank database between 2006 and 2010 and followed them up until the end of 2021. We assessed personality traits using the Big Five proxies derived from UK Biobank data: sociability, warmth, diligence, curiosity, and nervousness. Healt

A pattern to rule them all: tracing a human brain map of molecular aspects shared by Alzheimer's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (LBD) are the most widespread forms of degenerative dementia. However, little is known about the molecular aspects that link these conditions with each other and with aging itself. Whole transcriptome analysis and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) have been carried out on brain samples from hippocampus (HI), temporal and parietal cortex (TC, PC), cingulate cortex (CG), and substantia nigra (SN) of subjects with a neuropathological diagnosis of AD or LBD. According to the Abbiategrasso Brain Bank (ABB) protocol, the neuropathological diag

Critical Considerations for Mesenchymal Stem Cell-based Therapies in Osteoarthritis and Spinal Cord Injury: A Narrative Review.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been proposed as treatments for degenerative diseases, but clinical outcomes have been inconsistent. Here, we reviewed the ClinicalTrials.gov database and identified ~1,600 trials associated with MSC-based therapies; osteoarthritis (OA) and spinal cord injury (SCI) were most frequently investigated, but the reporting of results was consistently low (<7%). We next searched the PubMed database and identified 26 OA and 16 SCI published trials, which included studies from one or both databases. Our analysis identified a common set of factors that influenced thera
