Several studies have postulated that psychoacoustic measures of auditory perception are influenced by efferent-induced changes in cochlear responses, but these postulations have generally remained untested. This study measured the effect of stimulus phase curvature and temporal envelope modulation on the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) and on the middle-ear muscle reflex (MEMR). The role of the MOCR was tested by measuring changes in the ear-canal pressure at 6 kHz in the presence and absence of a band-limited harmonic complex tone with various phase curvatures, centered either at (on-frequ

An SCD is a pathologic hole (or dehiscence) in the bone separating the superior semicircular canal from the cranial cavity that has been associated with a conductive hearing loss in patients with SCD syndrome. The conductive loss is defined by an audiometrically determined air-bone gap that results from the combination of a decrease in sensitivity to air-conducted sound and an increase in sensitivity to bone-conducted sound. Our goal is to demonstrate, through physiological measurements in an animal model, that mechanically altering the superior semicircular canal (SC) by introducing a hole (d

Gentamicin-specific immunolabeling was examined in the regenerating chick basilar papilla following gentamicin treatment. Surviving hair cells were labeled in the infracuticular area, predominantly in the basal body region. Label intensity in short hair cells (SHCs) was greater than tall hair cells (THCs). Quantitative examination of stereociliary bundle orientation in regenerated hair cells revealed a considerable degree of variability from normal. The orientation of SHC stereocilia was more varied than that of THC. The results suggest an association between the accumulation of gentamicin in

Five computer-synthesized broadband noises, each having the same average spectrum and the same unweighted Leq of 100 dB SPL but very different temporal structures, were used to produce hearing loss in chinchillas. Despite the same exposure energies and spectra, each noise exposure produced a different magnitude and frequency distribution of hearing loss and sensory cell loss. The results indicate that the statistical properties of a signal are important in the determination of hearing loss. When the audiometric and histological results are compared to a metric based upon kurtosis measured in t

Fistulization at various parts of the membranous labyrinth has been currently in use as one of the treatments for the symptoms of Meniere's disease. The present report concerns our experience with membranous fistulae in experimental animal ears with and without manifestation of endolymphatic hydrops. The materials presented are mostly new; however, our previous data are also incorporated in order to bring this issue into better perspective. The first part describes the nonproduction aspect of endolymphatic hydrops in the rat, chinchilla, and squirrel monkey after obliteration of the endolympha

Distortion products ( DPs ) evoked by two-tone stimuli at frequencies F1 and F2 were measured in the ear-canal sound pressure of the alligator lizard. The largest sound pressures measured, other than those at F1 and F2, where at the cubic difference frequencies 2F1-F2 and 2F2-F1. All cubic DPs were greatly reduced by destruction of the basilar membrane, which suggests that its nonlinear properties are the source of the DPs . Measurements following acoustic overstimulation show a complex relationship between the magnitude of DPs and cochlear state, as assessed by measurements of cochlear potent…

Loudness recruitment is a common symptom of hearing loss induced by cochlear lesions, which is defined as an abnormally fast growth of loudness perception of sound intensity. This is different from hyperacusis, which is defined as "abnormal intolerance to regular noises" or "extreme amplification of sounds that are comfortable to the average individual". Although both are characterized by abnormally high sound amplification, the mechanisms of occurrence are distinct. Damage to the outer hair cells alters the nonlinear characteristics of the basilar membrane, resulting in aberrant auditory nerv…

Epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS) is an inherited skin disorder characterized by increased skin and mucous membrane fragility. Most cases are caused by mutations in keratin 5 (KRT5) and keratin 14 (KRT14). Mutations of these genes result in cytoskeletal disruption of the basal keratinocytes. Gross and histopathologic findings of 2 clinically affected homozygous rhesus macaques with an insertion variant mutation in KRT5 are described and compared with 6 deceased phenotypically normal animals that were heterozygous for the KRT5 insertion variant. Animals that were homozygous for the KRT5 inser

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We examined the expression of thrombomodulin, a recently isolated anticoagulant protein, in endothelial cells from patients with spontaneous occlusion of the circle of Willis (cerebrovascular moyamoya disease) to determine whether lack of the expression of thrombomodulin might lead to the thrombogenicity in patients with this disease.
METHODS: The intracranial internal carotid arteries, the external carotid arteries, and the vertebral or basilar arteries from 12 autopsied patients who had this disease and eight control autopsied patients were examined immunohistochemic

A number of methods are presented for evaluating the effect of high-pass noise on the whole-nerve action potential (AP). These methods inclu … that the presentation of high-pass noise did not alter the frequency response of that region of the basilar membrane responding to a 4000-Hz tone-burst probe. As a result, we conclude that high-pass noise may be used to mask the response from remote regions of the cochlea without altering response characteristics from lower frequency regions.

OBJECTIVE: To better understand the differences in auditory systems across species.
METHODS: Auditory brainstem response (ABR) click thresholds were obtained from normal 3- to 6-week-old animals including 15 guinea pigs, 62 mice, and 6 rats. Pure-tone ABR thresholds were obtained in 7 guinea pigs, 6 mice, and 13 rats. Threshold variability was then considered a function of basilar membrane length, mean body weight, basal metabolic rate, and longevity as identified in the literature.
RESULTS: Interspecies variability of auditory thresholds for normal-hearing animals is not explained by differ…

We show that we can accurately model the auditory-nerve discharge patterns in response to sounds as complex as speech and ask how we may exploit this knowledge to test new strategies for hearing-aid signal processing. We describe the auditory-nerve representations of vowels in normal and noise-damaged ears. The normal representations are predicted well by a cochlear signal processing model originally developed by Carney (Carney, L. H. J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 93:401-417, 1993). Basilar-membrane tuning is represented by a time-varying narrow-band filter. Outer hair cell control of tuning is exerted

The cochlea is organized tonotopically: each frequency between 20 Hz and 20 kHz has its own location on the basilar membrane. In addition the cochlea has a large dynamic range (sound intensity). Active movements of the outer hair cells of the sensory organ of Corti play a crucial part in determining hearing acuity and frequency selectivity. Long-known properties such as combination tones and more recent observations like spontaneous and evoked otoacoustic emissions (the cochlea as sound source) fit in the same concept of a cochlea acting as a non-linear fine-tuned amplifier. Most sensorineural…

The active vibration of the basilar membrane as well as evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAE) are probably based on the motile properties of cochlear outer hair cells (OHC). In the present study we examined the effects of contralateral acoustic stimulation on ipsilateral EOAE and thereby the active cochlear micromechanics. Contralateral white noise with intensities below 30 dB HL enhanced the EOAE amplitude, whereas higher sound levels reduced the evoked acoustic emissions. Similar effects of contralateral acoustic stimuli on ipsilateral EOAE were observed in patients with a conductive hearing l…

Several types of nonauditory cells recover from transitory mechanically induced microlesions in their cell membranes. We report evidence that hair cells in the auditory papilla of the alligator lizard suffered similar membrane wounding when exposed to noise loud enough to induce a temporary threshold shift. Lucifer yellow, a molecular marker that does not normally penetrate through the cell membrane into the cytoplasm, was introduced into the extracellular fluid bathing the basolateral membrane of the hair cells. We assessed the effect of loud noise on the function of the ear by measuring comp
