Postmigratory Perceptions of Female Genital Mutilation: Qualitative Life History Research.

INTRODUCTION: Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is a practice, in breach of human rights, which currently extends to European countries. Given that migration to a Western country can involve cultural change, the aim of the present study is to explore the experiences and perceptions of sub-Saharan women regarding FGM/C following migration to Spain. METHOD: A qualitative exploratory research design utilizing life history methodology was applied. Participants (n = 24) were recruited until data saturation was reached. RESULTS: Sub-Saharan women describe their experience of FGM/C. Once in

Quantifying the dynamics of emotional expressions in family therapy of patients with anorexia nervosa.

Emotional interactions have been considered dynamical processes involved in the affective life of humans and their disturbances may induce mental disorders. Most studies of emotional interactions have focused on dyadic behaviors or self-reports of emotional states but neglected the dynamical processes involved in family therapy. The main objective of this study is to quantify the dynamics of emotional expressions and their changes using the family therapy of patients with anorexia nervosa as an example. Nonlinear methods characterize the variability of the dynamics at the level of the whole th

Evaluation of Possible Consequences of Zika Virus Infection in the Developing Nervous System.

The Zika virus (ZIKV) outbreak that occurred in the northeast of Brazil in 2015 led to alarming numbers of babies born with microcephaly in this region. Since then, several studies have evaluated the relationship between ZIKV infection and development of the malformation although the specific mechanistic interaction between ZIKV and human physiological processes that ultimately manifest as microcephaly remains debated. Importantly, most current studies did not consider the specificities of the biology and life cycle of ZIKV. As a consequence, specificities of the infection on the developing ce

Allostatic Load and Preterm Birth.

Preterm birth is a universal health problem that is one of the largest unmet medical needs contributing to the global burden of disease. Adding to its complexity is that there are no means to predict who is at risk when pregnancy begins or when women will actually deliver. Until these problems are addressed, there will be no interventions to reduce the risk because those who should be treated will not be known. Considerable evidence now exists that chronic life, generational or accumulated stress is a risk factor for preterm delivery in animal models and in women. This wear and tear on the bod

Human B cell defects in perspective.

While primary immune defects are generally considered to lead to severe and easily recognized disease in infants and children, a number of genetic defects impairing B cell function may not be clinically apparent or diagnosed until adult life. The commonest of these is common variable immune deficiency, the genetic origins of which are beginning to be at least partially understood. CVID affects ≈ 1/25,000 Caucasians and is characterized by a marked reduction in serum IgG, almost always in serum IgA, and reduced serum IgM in about half of all cases; these defects continue to provide an opportuni

Re-conceptualizing Parkinson's disease as a lifelong neurobiological trajectory: A framework for prevention.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disorder. No disease-modifying therapies exist. This review proposes that PD susceptibility begins with epigenetic changes and neuroimmune activity-factors that alter gene expression and immune responses-during the vulnerable PD lifespan. Human evidence is mostly indirect or contradictory. We present this as a testable trajectory, drawing on diverse epidemiologic, experimental, and mechanistic evidence to identify intervention opportunities. We adopt a life-course perspective focused on the brain's plasticity. We focus on cri

Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of gravitational therapy in a cohort of patients with systemic sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: The exposure to artificial gravity (AG) through human centrifugation is the basis of the treatment called gravity therapy (GT), in which the mechanical stimulation over the vessel wall, induces the synthesis and release of prostacyclin. It has been used for more than four decades in Uruguay in the treatment of different vascular-based pathologies. In patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) it has shown good benefits and excellent safety profile over the years. However, there is a lack of knowledge in the scientific community about GT and its results. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effe

Effects of erythropoietin on erythrocyte deformability in non-transfused preterm infants.

AIM: Suppression of erythropoiesis due to low plasma erythropoietin levels is an important factor in the development of anaemia of prematurity. Premature infants may therefore be treated with recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO). This prospective, randomised and controlled study was designed to find out whether rhEPO treatment improves erythrocyte deformability in preterm infants. METHODS: Sixteen infants were treated with rhEPO (250 IU/kg three times weekly) a total of 15 times beginning on day of life 5 whereas fifteen infants served as controls. Haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit,

Adult height and health-related quality of life in patients born small for gestational age treated with recombinant growth hormone.

Health related quality of life (HRQoL) is a relevant result when assessing the course of different pathologies and the efficacy of their treatments. HRQoL has been studied previously on adults born small for gestational age (SGA), both in the general population and in patients who had received recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) treatment, with disparate results. Our study included 50 adults who had received rhGH treatment for the SGA indication in 4 Spanish hospitals. Data have been gathered retrospectively from their clinical records, current weight and height were measured, and patients

In utero transplantation of fetal liver cells in the mucopolysaccharidosis type VII mouse results in low-level chimerism, but overexpression of beta-glucuronidase can delay onset of clinical signs.

Mice with the lysosomal storage disease mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) VII, caused by a deficiency of beta-glucuronidase (GUSB), have signs of disease present at birth. Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) or retroviral vector-mediated gene transfer into hematopoietic stem cells can partially correct the disease in adult mice, and BMT performed at birth results in a better clinical outcome. Thus, treatment in utero may result in further improvement. However, this must be done without cyto-ablation, and the donor cells do not have a competitive repopulating advantage over host cells. Transplantation

Cyclic neutropenia: a clinical review.

Cyclic neutropenia is a benign, hematologic disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of severe neutropenia at 21 day intervals. There are associated cyclical variations in other blood cells. Patients with this disease have malaise, stomatitis, cervical lymphadenopathy and fever during the recurrent neutropenic periods. The exact cause of cyclic neutropenia is unknown. About one third of human cases appear to be inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. In the other cases, the disease appears to arise spontaneously with symptoms usually beginning in infancy or early childhood. In adult pa

A Jewish response to the Vatican's new bioethical guidelines.

The Vatican recently published directives (Dignitas Personae) regarding "beginning of life" issues that explain the Catholic Church's position regarding new technologies in this area. We think that it is important to develop a response that presents the traditional Orthodox Jewish position on these same issues in order to present an alternative, parallel system. There are many points of commonality between the Vatican document and traditional Jewish thought as well as several important issues where there is a divergence of opinion. The latter include the status of the zygote as produced during

A Review of Modulation of Gut Microbiota to Mitigate Gestational Diabetes: Implications for Maternal and Child Health.

The increasing prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a pressing global public health concern. Despite extensive identification of GDM risk factors and the implementation of screening programs, there has been a notable lack of significant reduction in maternal, fetal, and neonatal complications. It is vital to recognize that the health trajectory of future generations begins before birth, during intrauterine life and even before conception. The development of 'diabetogenic' and 'obesogenic' changes in the DNA of offspring can be triggered not only by adverse intrauterine conditio

Varieties of Castration Experience: Relevance to Contemporary Psychoanalysis and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.

Although Freud considered castration to be one of the two major anxieties of human life, the castration complex has been relatively neglected in contemporary psychoanalytic writing and is insufficiently discussed in presentations of clinical cases. This article discusses the relevance of the concept to contemporary psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy, in particular the important contributing role of castration conflicts in the pathogenesis of a wide range of clinical symptoms. The author begins by briefly reviewing some classical and contemporary psychoanalytic ideas about castratio

Blood-brain barrier dysfunction in aging induces hyperactivation of TGFβ signaling and chronic yet reversible neural dysfunction.

Aging involves a decline in neural function that contributes to cognitive impairment and disease. However, the mechanisms underlying the transition from a young-and-healthy to aged-and-dysfunctional brain are not well understood. Here, we report breakdown of the vascular blood-brain barrier (BBB) in aging humans and rodents, which begins as early as middle age and progresses to the end of the life span. Gain-of-function and loss-of-function manipulations show that this BBB dysfunction triggers hyperactivation of transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ) signaling in astrocytes, which is necessary an

Oxidative stress in the retina: implications for Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Oxygen supplementation has been used as a part of respiratory care for preterm and term newborns since the beginning of 19th century. Although oxygen administration can be life-saving, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) due to hyperoxia can have detrimental effects in the developing organs of the preterm infants, with both short and long term consequences. Oxygen toxicity on the immature tissues of preterm infants can contribute to the development of several diseases like retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). The vascular developm

Effects of silver nanoparticles prenatal exposure on rat offspring development.

Many types of nanocomposites employed in food packaging are based on silver nanoparticles (AgNP) because of their antibacterial properties, which can increase food shelf-life. As the commercialization of AgNP products has been expanding, the released of such nanoparticles in the environment has caused enormous concern, once they can pose potential risks to the environment and human beings. For instance, exposure of the maternal environment to nanomaterials during pregnancy may impact the health of the dam, fetus and offspring. In this context, here we investigated the effects of prenatal expos

Rhinovirus and childhood asthma: an update.

Asthma is recognized as a complex disease resulting from interactions between multiple genetic and environmental factors. Accumulating evidence suggests that respiratory viral infections in early life constitute a major environmental risk factor for the development of childhood asthma. Respiratory viral infections have also been recognized as the most common cause of asthma exacerbation. The advent of molecular diagnostics to detect respiratory viruses has provided new insights into the role of human rhinovirus (HRV) infections in the pathogenesis of asthma. However, it is still unclear whethe
