Seroepidemiology of toxoplasmosis in pregnant women and detection of infection acquired during pregnancy in Cotonou, Benin.

Assessing the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in pregnant women and the associated risk factors is the first step in defining policy for the prevention of congenital toxoplasmosis in a given population. An epidemiological study was conducted during prenatal consultations at the CHU-MEL of Cotonou (Benin) between September 2018 and April 2021 and recruited 549 pregnant women to determine the seroprevalence and potential factors associated with Toxoplasma gondii infection. Toxoplasma gondii IgG/IgM antibodies were detected using an enzyme-linked fluorescence assay (ELFA) technique, an IgG avidity te…

Plant and natural product based homemade remedies for veterinary uses by the Peul community in Benin.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Across Africa, Peul community typically rely on plant-based veterinary knowledge to manage common livestock health problems. Unfortunately, their nomadic life-style being affected by conflicts, land tenure constraints, and drought, they have been shifting to a sedentary life. The process of their settlement led to the erosion of the vast ethnoveterinary skills they had acquired over centuries and forced them to replace the plant and other species they used by commercial products. AIM OF THE STUDY: 1) To collect comprehensive data from the Benin Peul community o…

Modeling the seasonality of Anopheles gambiae s.s. biting rates in a South Benin sanitary zone.

BACKGROUND: Efficient malaria vector control requires knowledge of spatio-temporal vector dynamics. We have classified village groups according to the biting rate profiles of both Anopheles coluzzii and An. gambiae, the major malaria vectors in these villages. METHODS: Mosquitoes were captured by human bait in 28 South Benin villages during 2009. Both An. coluzzii and An. gambiae counts in each village were standardized to focus on changes in the vector biting rate over time. Latent class trajectory modeling, allowing for random intercept at the 'village' level, was adjusted to standardized v…

Is chloroquine chemoprophylaxis still effective to prevent low birth weight? Results of a study in Benin.

BACKGROUND: In areas of stable transmission, malaria during pregnancy is associated with severe maternal and foetal outcomes, especially low birth weight (LBW). To prevent these complications, weekly chloroquine (CQ) chemoprophylaxis is now being replaced by intermittent preventive treatment with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine in West Africa. The prevalence of placental malaria and its burden on LBW were assessed in Benin to evaluate the efficacy of weekly CQ chemoprophylaxis, prior to its replacement by intermittent preventive treatment. METHODS: In two maternity clinics in Ouidah, an observation…

Guiding malaria elimination interventions: a data-driven approach to resource optimization in Benin, West Africa.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major public health challenge in Benin, where environmental conditions strongly influence its transmission dynamics. Understanding the spatial heterogeneity of malaria risk is essential for targeting interventions more effectively. METHODS: This study applied high-resolution environmental covariates and a robust Stochastic Partial Differential Equation (SPDE) model to investigate the distribution of malaria prevalence across Benin. Remote sensing-derived variables, including temperature and vegetation indices, as well as information about soil, built-up areas, an…

Non-Mastomys rodents harbour ancient Lassa virus lineages within Benin and Nigeria's Guinea savanna belt.

The zoonotic Lassa virus (LASV), killing thousands of people annually, is maintained majorly by the multimammate mice Mastomys natalensis and M. erythroleucus; but other rodent reservoirs exist. Knowledge regarding LASV ecology remains limited in certain areas where Lassa fever continues to be incident and even recently emergent. Here, we assess community composition and LASV infection-status of small mammals in key localities across the Guinea savanna belt that spans the countries of Benin and Nigeria. Active LASV infection was determined by conventional (gel based)- and quantitative-PCR scre…
