The subtitle to the conference upon which this journal issue is based invited us to 'follow Crowter'. This paper does so primarily by following the person and only thereby attends to the legal judgment. In particular, it will attend to her comment that When mum told me about the discrimination against babies like me in the womb, I felt like a knife had been put into my heart. It made me feel less valued than other people. The argument is that (I) there are strong reasons for such an approach from the field of theological ethics and that this is valuable for pastoral theology and for bioethics.…

Osteoporosis is a common multifactorial disorder of reduced bone mass. The disorder in its most common form is generalized, affecting the elderly, both sexes, and all racial groups. Multiple environmental factors are involved in the pathogenesis. Genes also play a major role as reflected by heritability of many components of bone strength. Quantitative phenotypes in bone strength in the normal population do not conform to a monogenetic mode of inheritance. The common form of osteoporosis is generally considered to be a polygenic disorder arising from the interaction of common polymorphic allel

During the last decade there has been a striking growth in interest in ethical issues arising from the development of neurosciences. It was … of them (i.e. ethics of neurosciences), neuroethics is basically understood as a sub--discipline of bioethics. Although there are some reasons for distinguishing several branches or sub-disciplines of bioethics (genethics, neuroethics, nanoethics, etc.), there are sound arguments against such a tendency for the proliferation of biomedical ethics. The second …

The clinical autopsy of foetuses, stillborn babies, or neonates and the examination of the placenta help to inform the mother's decision-making and her medical care for subsequent pregnancies. Indeed, these post-mortem examinations can identify unexpected congenital malformations or the cause of repeated miscarriage or stillbirth. However, the use of clinical pathology for diagnostic purposes in the context of family planning for bereaved parents with an unfulfilled desire to have a child, and IVF couples has received little attention to date. This article applies Beauchamp and Childress' bioe

Artificial gametes, derived from stem cells, have the potential to enable in vitro fertilization of embryos. Currently, artificial gametes are only being generated in laboratory animals; however, considerable efforts are underway to develop artificial gametes using human cell sources. These artificial gametes are being proposed as a means to address infertility through assisted reproductive technologies. Nonetheless, the availability of artificial gametes obtained from adult organisms can potentially expand the possibilities of reproduction. Various groups, such as same-sex couples, post-menop

This paper has both theoretical and practical ambitions. The theoretical ambitions are to explore what would constitute both effective and ethical treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). However, the practical ambition is perhaps more important: we argue that a dominant form of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which is widely taken to be far-and-away the best "treatment" for ASD, manifests systematic violations of the fundamental tenets of bioethics. Moreover, the supposed benefits of the treatment not only fail to mitigate these violations, but often exacerbate them. Warnings of the peri…

Medical devices are often referred to as being invasive or non-invasive. Though invasiveness is relevant, and central, to how devices are understood and regarded in medicine and bioethics, a consensus concept or definition of invasiveness is lacking. To begin to address this problem, this essay explores four possible descriptive meanings of invasiveness: how devices are introduced to the body, where they are located in the body, whether they are foreign to the body, and how they change the body. An argument is offered that invasiveness is not purely descriptive, but implicates normative concep…

Human fetal tissue is a scarce resource that has been used in Australia for biomedical research since 1980. From 1994 to 2002, it has been used for research by 19 biomedical researchers at 12 separate Australian institutions (four universities, six major teaching hospitals and two research institutes). With an average of 265 samples distributed annually, researchers have conducted experiments in biomedical research with the approval of their Human Ethics Committees, and published 74 manuscripts in peer reviewed journals over the past decade. The tissue is obtained from therapeutic termination

Informed consent is both a foundational principle of research ethics and a human right grounded in self-determination and bodily integrity. During the COVID-19 pandemic, legislative attempts were made in South Korea to bypass informed consent and ethics review requirements for research involving patients with infectious diseases. Framed as emergency measures to accelerate biomedical innovation, the proposals sparked resistance from a broad coalition of civil society actors, including human rights advocates, patient organizations, labor unions, medical professionals, and bioethics scholars. Thi…

This editorial asks what a family needs to keep for the years after th … e resolution, but an extended present in which care, grief, and unproven harm remain open together. In this paper, we present a comprehensive case study analysis of a specific legal order issued by the Court of First Instance Number 6 of Santiago de Compostela on March 21, 2023. The focal point of the case study is the utilization of Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), a specific neurotechnology, in an emergency clinical situation. The objective of this article is to examine the legal and bioethical dimensions surrounding the use of ECT, shedding light on the ethical implications and decision-making processes involved in such cases. The analysis delves into the legal aspects of the case, consid

BACKGROUND: Nursing ethics teaching often relies on lectures and paper-based cases, which may not adequately prepare students for ethically ambiguous clinical practice. Evidence on low-resource, narrative, immersive approaches for nursing ethics education remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: To explore how undergraduate nursing students described their ethical reasoning, ethical positioning, and perceived learning after participating in an immersive ethical role-play simulation (IERS).
DESIGN: Qualitative descriptive study.
SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A total of 102 second-year undergraduate nursing s

As technological and genomic innovations continue to advance precision cancer prevention, psychosocial, ethical, and operational complexities increasingly accompany their development. Addressing these challenges will require intentional cross-disciplinary collaboration. We argue that the distinct yet complementary lenses of bioethics and implementation science will be crucial as precision cancer prevention technologies move toward clinical integration. We provide a framework for how this joint effort can be accomplished and sustained across the translational pipeline.

Bioethics has developed against a backdrop of increased concern for human and civil rights, including the rights of patients to decide about their own treatment. The recent case of Laleh and Ladan Bijani, the twenty-nine-year old Iranian conjoined twins who died in a Singapore hospital on Jul 8, after more than fifty hours of surgery aimed at separating them, highlights the tensions between respect for patient autonomy and professional medical judgment.

Bertolotti syndrome is a lumbosacral anomaly that induces persistent lumbar pain. This case describes 3D navigation-guided resection of an enlarged transverse process. Sufficient decompression provided pain relief refractory to noninvasive treatments. ODI and SF-36 scales validated clinical efficacy, reflecting profound enhancement in the patient's functional and health-related quality of life. Trial Registration: The publication project was approved by the Bioethics Committee of the Medical University of Łódź and conforms to the Declaration of Helsinki.

Fertility treatments, which are part of "assisted reproductive technologies" (ART), mainly undertaken through in vitro fertilization (IVF), … y, and integrity; yet on the other hand, these concepts are also undermining the very principles of bioethics they are supposed to express and rely on. Based on this suggested criticism, we offer two "take home" messages informed by our analysis of the Israeli case, but reaching beyond it.
