[Premature ejaculation: the main physiological mechanisms and new approaches to the treatment].

Premature ejaculation (PE) is characterized by an early ejaculation, which occurs within 1 minute after or before vaginal penetration. PE is the most common sexual problem and leads to a number of negative psychological consequences. To understand the etiopathogenesis of PE, it is necessary to understand the physiological mechanisms of the ejaculatory reflex. A group of galanine-ergic lumbar spinothalamic cells (LSt cells) with their numerous projections to various structures of the central nervous system plays a crucial role. The main approaches to the treatment of PE are based on the inhibit

A Randomized Sham-Controlled Trial of Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback Following Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is often associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation and reduced heart rate variability (HRV), potentially affecting cognition. This study tested whether HRV biofeedback (HRV-B) improved resting HRV and stress recovery in individuals with TBI compared to sham control. We also examined whether HRV changes related to physical symptoms, emotional well-being, cognitive performance, and adherence. Fifty-eight participants with TBI enrolled; 49 completed the study (HRV-B: 25, mean age 27.1; sham: 24, mean age 26.6). Participants attended five weekly sess

Heart Rate Variability, Cortisol and Attention Focus During Shamatha Quiescence Meditation.

Cardiac vagal tone can be seen as a stable marker for the ability to sustain attention and regulate emotion, two factors associated with the quality of meditation. In this study, heart rate variability (HRV) has been monitored in different forms of Shamatha quiescence meditation: three breath meditations, Settling the Mind in its natural state, Awareness of Awareness, Loving-kindness and Tonglen. Establish and test a practical means of monitoring neurobiological effects of meditation. Over 6 weeks, two experimental groups practiced Shamatha meditation on a daily basis (n = 20). HRV patterns an

Protective effect of heart rate variability biofeedback on stress-induced lung function impairment in asthma.

Psychological stress can provoke airway constriction in asthmatic patients, which may be because of autonomic nervous system dysfunction in asthma. We investigated the effect of enhancing respiratory sinus arrhythmia using heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) on spirometry performance and HRV indices during stress induced by Stroop Color-Word interference test in asthmatic patients and healthy volunteers. Stress caused decrease in FEV1%, FVC%, and PEF% compared to baseline in asthmatic patients, but not in healthy subjects. A single short duration episode of HRV-BF not only had a protec

Multimodal perspectives on dental anxiety etiology and technologies.

Dental anxiety is a complex condition that negatively impacts oral health, quality of life and dental care efficiency, often arising from psychological, physiological and early negative experiences that extend into adulthood. Therefore, it is of interest to assess its severity and identify triggers, tools such as the dental anxiety scale (DAS), modified dental anxiety scale (MDAS), dental fear scale (DFS) and visual analog scale (VAS). Children are often evaluated using the venham picture test (VPT) and facial image scale (FIS). Management involves behavioral and psychological methods, includi

Technical validation of a multimodal emotion-adaptive biofeedback system for autonomic regulation using guided breathing.

Breathing interventions delivered through biofeedback have been shown to support physiological modulation consistent with resonance breathing responses. However, most biofeedback systems on the market are based on fixed procedures, provide limited physiological feedback, and do not adapt to user comfort or emotional state. The system is designed to work under a typical 20-min biofeedback timeframe and uses a two-stage adaptive respiration rate (RR) algorithm that gradually converges toward resonance frequency while dynamically responding to signs of emotional discomfort. System-level testing w

Varying effectiveness of real-time biofeedback across various activities in preserving lumbar Lordotic curvature using an inertial measurement system.

Preserving lumbar lordotic curvature (LLC) is considered an important strategy for both managing low back pain (LBP) and preventing its exacerbation; however, this approach has traditionally been limited to postural education. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a real-time biofeedback system that uses inertial sensors, and to compare its impact across various activities. Ten male participants with LBP wore sensor-equipped clothing while performing four daily activities commonly associated with an increased risk of LBP, under varying conditions of auditory feedback and postural e

Synergy Between Neurofeedback and Biofeedback Enhances Therapeutic Outcomes.

This paper discusses both the 'why' and the 'how' concerning a multi-modal approach to enhancing treatment outcomes with a variety of clients. First, the necessity of an approach to client care that combines treatment modalities will be discussed. Then comes discussion of the history of combining modalities along with discussion of which combinations of treatments should be considered for different disorders. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), for example, requires more than one intervention because its neurological basis means it is appropriate for the brain-based intervention o

Effectiveness of biofeedback on blood pressure in patients with hypertension: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Hypertension is the leading modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, but less than 50% have their blood pressure controlled. A possible avenue to support hypertension management is a holistic approach, using non-pharmacological interventions. Since hypertension is mediated in part by dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), biofeedback may help improve hypertension management by targeted self-regulation and self-awareness of parameters that regulate the ANS. This systematic review aimed to assess the effectiveness of biofeedback on blood pressure in hypertensive patients.

A Pilot Study of the Biofeedback Training to Reduce Salivary Cortisol Level and Improve Mental Health in Highly-Trained Female Athletes.

Biofeedback (BFB) training can provide a useful resource for athletes to cope with stress. However, the effects of BFB training on acute and chronic endocrine stress responses, parasympathetic activity, and mental health in competitive athletes have not been explored yet. This pilot study examined the effects of a 7-week BFB training on psychophysiological parameters in highly trained female athletes. Six highly trained female volleyball players (mean age: 17.50 ± 1.05 years) volunteered to participate in the study. Athletes individually attended 21-session heart rate variability (HRV)-BFB tra

Effects of facial biofeedback on hypomimia, emotion recognition, and affect in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Facial expressions are a core component of emotions and nonverbal social communication. Therefore, hypomimia as secondary symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) has adverse effects like social impairment, stigmatization, under-diagnosis and under-treatment of depression, and a generally lower quality of life. Beside unspecific dopaminergic treatment, specific treatment options for hypomimia in PD are rarely investigated. This quasi-randomized controlled trial evaluated the short-term effects of facial electromyogram (EMG) based biofeedback to enhance facial expression and emotion reco

[Current status and prospects of non-surgical treatment for fecal incontinence].

Fecal incontinence is a refractory disease in colorectal surgery. The main clinical manifestation is that patients cannot control the discharge of gas, solid or liquid feces in the rectum autonomously. It is easy to bring shame to patients and seriously affect their physical and mental health. Reducing the frequency of fecal incontinence, restoring anal sphincter function, and improving patient quality of life are important goals for treating fecal incontinence. With the development of medical technology and the improvement of treatment plans for fecal incontinence, patients with fecal inconti

The effect of duration between sessions on biofeedback treatment in children with dysfunctional voiding.

OBJECTIVE: Biofeedback is an effective treatment in children with standard urotherapy-resistant dysfunctional voiding (DV). However, the duration of the session intervals is not standardized. We aimed to compare the effectiveness of daily and weekly sessions of biofeedback treatments. METHODS: The data of children who received biofeedback due to DV between March 2018 and May 2019 were retrospectively evaluated. The children were divided into two groups, one with daily and the other with weekly sessions. The voiding patterns in uroflowmetry (UF), maximum flow rate (Qmax), electromyography acti
