Unlike other arthropods, spiders rarely transmit communicable diseases, and thus play a critical role in the ecosystem by consuming other insects that frequently transmit human diseases, such as mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas. There are more than 30,000 species of spiders worldwide, most of which are venomous, but cannot inflict serious bites due to delicate mouthparts and short fangs. Other insect bites, skin infections, and chemical- or physical-agent exposures are often misdiagnosed as spider bites. Approximately 40 species from 4 major genera of spiders in Louisiana and throughout the South,

Animal bites are an extremely common problem in the United States. Dogs are by far the most common offender, closely followed by cats, humans, and rats. Most injuries are trivial, but can become infected, and fatalities do occur. A wide variety of organisms cause a multitude of clinical problems, but cellulitis and lymphangitis caused by Pasteurella multocida are most common. Human bites, especially of the hand, present major problems in management, and staphylococci or streptococci are frequent pathogens. Penicillin is an effective first-line antibiotic for animal bites, while a penicillinase

BACKGROUND: Several studies carried out in Benin have shown the involvement of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.), the Anopheles funestus group in malaria transmission, but none of them reported the contribution of the Anopheles nili group to the transmission of this disease. The current study investigated the question through an entomological cross-sectional survey performed in Northern Benin.
METHODS: Mosquito samplings were performed in September and October 2017 in 4 villages located in two districts: Bambaba and Wodara (Kérou district) and, Péhunco 2 and Béké (Péhunco district). The col

In the last decade much progress has been made in our understanding of animal bites. Two major areas of remaining controversy are discussed. Recent study of human bites has shown that the early literature depicting all human bites as having an extraordinarily high infection and complication rate was biased by its emphasis on human bites of the hand that presented late with infection already present. These bites, the so-called closed-fist injuries (CFI), do indeed have a poor prognosis, but it may be as much due to their location and initial neglect as to the source of the injury. Human bites e

Rabies is a vaccine-preventable fatal zoonotic disease. Uganda, through the veterinary surveillance system at National Animal Disease Diagnostics and Epidemiology Centre (NADDEC), captures animal bites (a proxy for rabies) on a monthly basis from districts. We established trends of incidence of animal bites and corresponding post-exposure prophylactic anti-rabies vaccination in humans (PEP), associated mortality rates in humans, spatial distribution of animal bites, and pets vaccinated during 2013-2017. We reviewed rabies surveillance data at NADDEC from 2013-2017. The surveillance system capt

Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS) is a life-threatening emerging infectious disease caused by the SFTS virus. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to gain new insights into the routes of transmission to humans and assess whether tick bites are the dominant mechanism, as previously reported in the medical literature. Original articles were searched through Embase, Medline, and Global Health from 2009 to 2022. We performed meta-analyses to pool adjusted odds ratio (aOR) estimates using a fixed-effects model. Of 1683 articles, 41 eligible articles from three co

OBJECTIVES: This study assesses exposure to malaria vector mosquitos that is nonpreventable through use of nets, the contribution of outdoor and indoor biting towards residual vector exposure, and the risk factors for being bitten and for being infected with malaria parasites on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea.
METHODS: Human behavior and malaria infection data were collected from 13,735 randomly selected residents during cross-sectional surveys, concomitantly with entomological human landing catches, indoors and outdoors, in 20 locations on the Island. Self-reported time of going indoors, go

Human bite injuries, although less frequent than animal bites, usually stem from aggressive behavior, sports participation, or sexual activity. Human genital bites and similar traumatic events also occur, but are infrequently reported because of embarrassment. A genital ulceration following mild trauma during oral-genital contact is reported and appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic interventions reviewed. The ulcer was infected, as verified by culture, with an aggressive oral flora organism, Eikenella corrodens. The genital ulceration healed following appropriate antibiotic therapy. Treatmen

Background: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus is transmitted to humans via tick bites and occasionally via the consumption of unpasteurized milk products. According to the literature, the most important driver of TBE emergence and increase in incidence in humans is changes in human behaviour/activities. Method and principal findings: To compensate for the lack of data, expert opinions were gathered to identify the risk factors for exposure to tick bites linked to twenty-eight human activities (professional or recreational) in forests and to target prevention messages at the populations most

During 1975, 332 animal bite injuries accounted for 1.2% of all surgical problems treated at the UCLA Hospital Emergency Department. Data on 307 bite injuries were available and analyzed for environmental, animal, human, interaction, and clinical factors. More than half of the dog bites and almost three fourths of the cat bites-scratches happened at or near the victims' homes. Dog bites were almost twice as common among men, while cat bites-scratches were twice as common among women. Of the incidents in which ownership information was available, 85% of dog bites and 80% of cat bites-scratches

BACKGROUND: Early evening and outdoor biting by vector mosquitoes undermines the effectiveness of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), as users of nets are exposed to vector biting whilst not under a net, both outdoors and indoors. This study assessed exposure to malaria vector bites amongst users and non-users of ITNs in southwestern Mali.
METHODS: Using cross-sectional household survey data of human behaviour and malaria infection prevalence, along with mosquito human landing catch (HLC) data collected in 30 separate communities, the average number of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) mosquit

Background Human-wildlife conflict is a global threat to sustainable development, food security, and conservation. Southeast Asia, including India, faces a major risk, with a very high number of animal bites occurring annually. While several studies have focused on dog bites, the aim of this study is to describe monkey bite cases and understand the associated factors to improve rabies prevention. This study explores patient perceptions and attitudes regarding the availability of services, alongside considerations of human and animal ethics with respect to monkey bites. Insect bites and bite wounds are quite common and most often have mild repercussions in humans. Statistics on the incidence of accidents caused by insects are not available, and the skin reactions after the bites are not always known. The authors present two cases of patients with hemorrhagic blisters on their hands after tabanidae bites and discuss the factors that cause the problem and the importance of the differential diagnosis of blisters with hemorrhagic content on human skin.

Red meat allergies have followed tick bites on every continent except Antarctica. The sensitizing antigen is galactose-α-1,3-galactose (α-gal), an oligosaccharide constituent of nonprimate blood and meat, acquired by ticks during animal bloodfeeding. Because red meat allergy after tick bites is a worldwide phenomenon, the objectives of this review were to describe the global epidemiology of red meat allergy after tick bites and its immunological mechanisms; to identify the human risk factors for red meat allergy after tick bites; to identify the most common tick vectors of red meat allergy wor

BACKGROUND: Dog bites can have an array of negative health impacts on victims. Research focusing on the correlates of bites focused on limited sets of variables and produced conflicting findings.
OBJECTIVE: To expand knowledge about the correlates of dog bites by exploring a comprehensive set of variables related to the nature of the dog and the circumstances surrounding the bite not commonly explored in extant research.
METHODS: Data were drawn from police department reports of dog bites in the city of Detroit between 2007-2015; 478 dog bites were reported. Multiple regression was used to d

INTRODUCTION: Dog bites are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly where rabies is endemic. There is also a significant financial burden attached to prophylactic treatment to diminish the risk of rabies infection. KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has a high incidence of human rabies yet little is known about the demographics of dog bites in the province.
OBJECTIVES: To analyse the demographics of dog bites in Northern KZN.
METHODS: Records of all dog bites presenting to the main referral hospital in Northern KZN between August 2007 and September 2011 were analysed.

INTRODUCTION: Rabies poses a significant public health and economic challenge in Kenya. The Kenya rabies elimination strategy identifies surveillance as a key pillar to achieve the targets of ending human deaths from rabies by 2030. Here we investigated the utility of the national human and animal rabies surveillance data to provide robust surveillance data to guide the Kenya rabies elimination program.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the official rabies data obtained from the national human and animal health surveillance systems between 2017 and 2023. We obtained data on bi

Spider bites are uncommon medical events, since there are limited number of spiders world-wide with fangs strong enough to pierce human skin, and most spiders bite humans only as a final defense when being crushed between skin and another object. Thus, most lesions attributed to spider bites are caused by some other etiology. The spiders that can cause medically significant bites include widow and false widow spiders (worldwide), recluse spiders (mostly North and South America), Australian funnel web spiders (eastern coastal Australia) and Phoneutria spiders (Brazil). Acute spider bites most c

Data abstracted from 34 death certificates indicate that the three venomous animal groups most often responsible for human deaths in California from 1960 through 1976 were Hymenoptera (bees, wasps, ants and the like) (56 percent), snakes (35 percent) and spiders (6 percent). An average incidence of 2.0 deaths per year occurred during these 17 years, or an average death rate of 0.01 per 100,000 population per year. Nearly three times more males than females died of venomous animal bites and stings. Half of the deaths from venomous snake bites occurred in children younger than 5 years of age. Su
