The Growing Threat of Gonococcal Blindness.

Antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea is now a reality, as well as the consequences of untreatable infections. Gonococcal eye infections result in blindness if not properly treated; they accounted for the vast majority of infections in children in homes for the blind in the pre-antibiotic era. Neisseria gonorrhoeae infects the eyes of infants born to mothers with gonorrhea and can also infect the eyes of adults. Changes in sexual practices may account for the rise in adult gonococcal eye infections, although some cases seem to have occurred with no associated genital infection. As gonorrhea becomes i…

Steroid-induced glaucoma and childhood blindness.

AIM: To determine the prevalence, risk factors and the severity of visual loss caused by steroid-induced glaucoma (SIG) among children. MET … st and 52% had been on topical steroids for >1 year. Glaucomatous optic neuropathy was the cause of blindness in 37.3% (22/59) and low vision in 23.7% (14/59) children. And 27% (16/59) were unilaterally blind at presentation. CONCLUSIONS: A third of the children presenting with SIG to our tertiary care centre were bilaterally blind at presentation. Ophthal …

Auditory motion processing after early blindness.

Studies showing that occipital cortex responds to auditory and tactile stimuli after early blindness are often interpreted as demonstrating that early blind subjects "see" auditory and tactile stimuli. However, it is not clear whether these occipital responses directly mediate the perception of auditory/tactile stimuli, or simply modulate or augment responses within other sensory areas. We used fMRI pattern classification to categorize the perceived direction of motion for both coherent and ambiguous auditory motion stimuli. In sighted individuals, perceived motion direction was accurately cat…

Reduced taste sensitivity in congenital blindness.

Sight is undoubtedly not only important for food identification and selection but also for the modulation of gustatory sensitivity. We can, … ggest that the lower taste sensitivity observed in congenitally blind individuals is due to various blindness-related obstacles when shopping for food, cooking and eating out, all of which contribute to underexpose the gustatory system to a larger variety of taste stimuli.

Nutritional amblyopia combined with night blindness.

We report the case of an 18-year-old male who developed both nutritional amblyopia and night blindness. After nearly a lifetime of consuming a bizarre diet limited to French fries, pretzels, crackers, and carbonated sodas, he had a relatively sudden onset of night blindness and bilateral visual loss. The night blindness resolved after taking daily oral vitamin A supplements. Visual acuity gradually improved from light perception, both eyes, to 20/20 right eye and 20/25 left eye after multivitamin supplementation and vitamin B(12) injections. The patient had bilateral optic atrophy and bilatera…

Permanent blindness after endoscopic sinus surgery.

Few cases of ophthalmic complications have been reported following sinus endoscopic surgery with current techniques. Irreversible damage to orbital structures was found in a 21-year-old patient referred to our department for evaluation after sinus endoscopic surgery and ipsilateral amaurosis.

[Recurrent cortical blindness after LSD-intake].

Recurrent disturbances of vision associated with headaches are typical signs of a migraine. A 15-year-old girl suffered from common migraine. The patient had a headache and nausea five days after a first and proved intake of LSD. Shortly later, a complete blindness of both eyes developed within seconds. These symptoms continued for 48 hours. As the pupillar reactions were intact the findings were consistent with cortical blindness. MRI and MR-angiography of the brain, analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid and blood investigations for thrombophilia were normal. The EEG showed a bilateral symmetri…

Onchocerca volvulus, Wolbachia and river blindness.

Chronic infection with filarial nematodes results in development of a suppressive response to an immense parasite burden, thereby limiting pathological and clinical manifestations. However, pro-inflammatory responses to dead and degenerating Onchocerca volvulus worms and release of endosymbiotic Wolbachia bacteria result in corneal opacification, sacrification and visual impairment. This review discusses host and parasite factors implicated in maintaining this balance of pro- an anti-inflammatory responses, and will focus on adaptive and innate immunity to filarial antigens and endosymbiotic W

Blindness and eye disease in Cambodia.

PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence and etiology of blindness and low vision and to assess the prevalence of common eye diseases in central Cambodia. METHODS: In this cross-sectional, population-based study, 6,558 residents of Kandal Province, Cambodia were registered, and 5,803 (88.5%) were interviewed and examined. This house-to-house survey was conducted by a team consisting of a senior ophthalmologist, a Cambodian eye doctor, and eight Cambodian eyecare workers. RESULTS: The prevalence of bilateral blindness (visual acuity <3/60) is 1.1% (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.9-1.4), and an addi…

[Epidemiology of blindness in Baden, Germany].

BACKGROUND: There is no exact knowledge concerning blinding diseases in Germany. Purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of diseases leading to new blindness in Baden (Southern Germany). METHODS: We evaluated the ophthalmological diseases leading to blindness in Baden from the applications presented to the eye doctor for blind and low vision people in Baden, Germany from 1980 to 1999. RESULTS: 1511 applications for blindness (991 women and 520 men) aged 1-107 (mean age: 68 +/- 22 years) were evaluated. 62.5% of persons who had recently become blind, concerned patients aged 70 ye…

Sphenoid sinus mucocele with unilateral blindness.

Mucoceles of the sphenoid sinus are rare and may frequently remain undiagnosed until symptoms due to compression of surrounding structures set in. In such cases, the optic nerve, because of its close proximity to the sphenoid sinus, is at risk, and pressure exerted by the mucocele may result in visual impairment. A case of a sphenoid sinus mucocele with sudden-onset unilateral blindness as the only presenting symptom has been described. Early diagnosis and prompt surgical intervention enabled the vision to be restored completely.
