Myocardial Tissue Oxygenation and Microvascular Blood Volume Measurement Using a Contrast Blood Oxygenation Level-Dependent Imaging Model.

OBJECTIVES: We propose a method of quantitatively measuring drug-induced microvascular volume changes, as well as drug-induced changes in blood oxygenation using calibrated blood oxygen level-dependent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We postulate that for MRI signals there is a contribution to R2* relaxation rates from static susceptibility effects of the intravascular blood that scales with the blood volume/magnetic field and depends on the oxygenation state of the blood. These may be compared with the effects of an intravascular contrast agent. With 4 R2* measurements, microvascular blood …

Cervical blood perfusion assessed using power Doppler-derived estimation of fractional moving blood volume: a reproducibility study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the reproducibility of estimation of power Doppler-derived fractional moving blood volume (FMBV) in the uterine cervix of women with uncomplicated pregnancies. METHODS: Two experienced operators evaluated 30 uncomplicated singleton pregnancies at 20-24 weeks of gestation. The PDU box was positioned in a mid-sagittal view of the cervix, including the internal os and external os, in the same plane as that in which cervical length is measured. Two consecutive examinations were performed by each operator, in each of which the cervical length was measured and five consecutiv…

Preanalytical Quality Evaluation of Low-Volume Citrate Evacuated Blood Collection Tubes-Anticoagulant Solution Volume Accuracy, pH, and Anionic-Cationic Composition.

Blood collection tubes are widely used medical devices. Inaccurate citrate anticoagulant concentration can influence the results of coagulation tests. The producer's expertise and responsibility are considered the quality safeguards. However, the tubes undergo changes during their lifecycle, partly due to storage conditions, and the end user or a third party has no comprehensive insight. A methodology is necessary to reveal the tube's inherent characteristics. We provide insight into the anionic-cationic composition and pH of anticoagulant solutions in commercial tubes using high-performance i

A clinical evaluation of routine blood sampling practices in patients with diabetes: impact on fingerstick blood volume and pain.

BACKGROUND: There is a perception that patients with diabetes struggle to produce sufficient blood to fill glucose test strips, including strips with 1-µL fill requirements. The purpose of this study was to determine the volume of blood expressed when these patients perform routine fingersticks using their own lancing device and sampling technique and to evaluate the relationship between blood volume and pain. METHODS: Sixty-four patients (type 1 or type 2 diabetes) performed 8 fingersticks using their own lancing device and preferred depth setting and lancing technique. Eight different comme…

Peritumoral brain edema volume in meningioma correlates with tumor fractional anisotropy but not apparent diffusion coefficient or cerebral blood volume.

PURPOSE: Pathogenesis of peritumoral brain edema (PTBE) in meningiomas remains unclear. Associations between PTBE volume and diffusion or perfusion properties of meningioma have not been studied. We aimed to investigate if diffusion and perfusion properties of meningioma correlate with its PTBE volume. METHODS: Seventy consecutive patients (mean age, 58.9 ± 13.7 years; 37 women) with meningiomas who had preoperative DTI and DSC-PWI were retrospectively analyzed. PTBE volume, tumor volume, and mean T2 signal, ADC, FA, and CBV of the tumor were measured. Between meningiomas with and without PTB

Females have higher myocardial perfusion, blood volume and extracellular volume compared to males - an adenosine stress cardiovascular magnetic resonance study.

Knowledge on sex differences in myocardial perfusion, blood volume (MBV), and extracellular volume (ECV) in healthy individuals is scarce and conflicting. Therefore, this was investigated quantitatively by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). Healthy volunteers (n = 41, 51% female) underwent CMR at 1.5 T. Quantitative MBV [%] and perfusion [ml/min/g] maps were acquired during adenosine stress and at rest following an intravenous contrast bolus (0.05 mmol/kg, gadobutrol). Native T1 maps were acquired before and during adenosine stress, and after contrast (0.2 mmol/kg) at rest and during ade…

The Changes in Relative Blood Volume during Dialysis Are Characterized by Ultrafiltration Rate and Predialysis Blood Test Values.

INTRODUCTION: Continuous monitoring of relative blood volume (percentage BV) in hemodialysis (HD) is critical for determining dry weight and preventing intradialytic hypotension. However, the cause of the BV variation remains unknown. This research aimed to examine factors that influence the percentage BV. METHODS: We devised a formula based on coefficients ("a," "τ," and "b") to predict changes in percentage BV. "a" denotes a significant decrease in percentage BV in the early stages of HD. "τ" represents the transition from early to late phase of HD. "b" denotes the slope of the decrease in …

The measurement of dendritic cells in umbilical cord blood: a novel technique using small volumes of whole blood.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a technique that would permit the identification of dendritic cells (DC) in small volumes of preterm neonatal cord blood in order to investigate neonatal immune response in relation to infection and preterm labor. METHODS: We used three-color flow cytometry and a fixed quantity of fluorospheres to determine absolute cell numbers. Four red cell lysis techniques, sample dilution, time delay experiments, and a comparison with traditional Ficoll cell separation techniques were performed. Absolute numbers of DC recovered using each technique were calculated and compared. RES

Computed tomography-derived pulmonary blood volume distribution may be modifiable in asthma.

BACKGROUND: A smaller relative volume of the peripheral pulmonary vasculature in asthma, termed "vascular pruning", has been linked to great … ctional area (≤5 mm2 as BV5 and ≥10 mm2 as BV10). These volumes were reported relative to the total blood volume (TBV) as BV5% and BV10%. Change in blood vessel volumes from baseline to follow-up were evaluated and correlated with changes in patient-reported outcomes, type-2 inflammatory biomarkers and measurements of airway structure and function. RESULTS: F …

Decoding Blood Volume Loss: Can Non-Invasive Signals Match the Gold Standard?

The potential of advanced waveform analysis of physiological signals to diagnose varying levels of hypovolemia has not been fully explored. This study extends previous work by comparing the discriminative ability of invasive and non-invasive signals to classify levels of ongoing hypovolemia using a deep learning (DL) framework. Hypovolemia was simulated via a dynamic lower body negative pressure (LBNP) model among healthy volunteers, allowing for real-life-like fluctuations in intravascular blood volume caused by bleeding and resuscitation. The analysis incorporated photoplethysmography (PPG) …

Evaluation of product bioequivalence when subject blood volume necessitates limited sampling strategies.

In a traditional blood level bioequivalence (BE) study, every subject provides drug concentrations at each blood sampling time. However, this approach is not suitable for animals whose blood volume limits or prohibits multiple sample collections. In our previous research, we presented an approach that can be applied to studies using a destructive sampling design where each animal provides only 1 blood sample that is then incorporated into a composite profile. Another situation we sometimes face is that of when the animals can contribute more than one sample but are still limited in the number …

Splanchnic Nerve Block Mediated Changes in Stressed Blood Volume in Heart Failure.

OBJECTIVES: The authors estimated changes of stressed blood volume (SBV) induced by splanchnic nerve block (SNB) in patients with either decompensated or ambulatory heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). BACKGROUND: The splanchnic vascular capacity is a major determinant of the SBV, which in turn determines cardiac filling pressures and may be modifiable through SNB. METHODS: We analyzed data from 2 prospective, single-arm clinical studies in decompensated HFrEF (splanchnic HF-1; resting hemodynamics) and ambulatory heart failure (splanchnic HF-2; exercise hemodynamics). Patie…

Correlation between blood flow, tissue volume and microvessel density in the flap.

The purpose of this study was to assess the correlation between tissue volume and blood flow of the flap in an animal model. Using animal model, tissue volume can be attenuated, and precise change of blood flow could be evaluated. We further investigate the relationship between blood flow and vascular density in the tissue. In this study, we assessed flap conductance (ml/min/mm Hg) as to evaluate the conductivity of blood flow into the flap. Japanese white rabbit was used (n = 7) for this study. The amount of blood flow of jejunal and latissimus dorsi muscle (LD) flaps was measured while remov

Early MRI Blood Volume Changes in Constrictor Muscles Correlate With Postradiation Dysphagia.

PURPOSE: Predicting individual patient sensitivity to radiation therapy (RT) for tumor control or normal tissue toxicity is necessary to individualize treatment planning. In head and neck cancer, radiation doses are limited by many nearby critical structures, including structures involved in swallowing. Previous efforts showed that imaging parameters correlate with RT dose; here, we investigate the role of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) blood volume (BV) changes in predicting dysphagia. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This study included 32 patients with locally advance…
