Intrathecal baclofen for intractable axial dystonia.

Following spinal instrumentation for scoliosis, a patient developed intractable axial dystonia refractory to conservative medical management. We describe the successful treatment of this dystonia with a continuous infusion of intrathecal baclofen and the subsequent long-term management.

Progressive postnatal subependymal necrosis in an infant with congenital cytomegalovirus infection.

An infant with congenital cytomegalovirus infection developed subependymal cysts postnatally. This patient provides further support for the concept that congenitally-infected infants occasionally have postnatal progression of central nervous system lesions.

Is prosopagnosia more frequent in males than in females?

A case review of prosopagnosia was carried out and male-female incidence of the disorder compared to relative male-female incidence of cerebro-vascular disease in general. Prosopagnosia was found to occur significantly more frequently in males than in females. Possible implications of this finding vis-à-vis male-female differences in cerebral organization are discussed and topics for further investigation are suggested.

Tactile Perception for Stroke Induce Changes in Electroencephalography.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Tactile perception is a basic way to obtain and evaluate information about an object. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of tactile perception on brain activation using two different tactile explorations, passive and active touches, in individuals with chronic hemiparetic stroke. METHODS: Twenty patients who were diagnosed with stroke (8 right brain damaged, 12 left brain damaged) participated in this study. The tactile perception was conducted using passive and active explorations in a sitting position. To determine the neurological changes in the brai

Selenium health benefit values as seafood safety criteria.

Selenium (Se) is absolutely required for activity of 25-30 genetically unique enzymes (selenoenzymes). All forms of life that have nervous systems possess selenoenzymes to protect their brains from oxidative damage. Homeostatic mechanisms normally maintain optimal selenoenzyme activities in brain tissues, but high methylmercury (MeHg) exposures sequester Se and irreversibly inhibit selenoenzyme activities. However, nutritionally relevant amounts of Se can replace the Se sequestered by MeHg and maintain normal selenoenzyme activities, thus preventing oxidative brain damage and other adverse con

Rehabilitation strategies for patients with homonymous visual field defects.

Homonymous visual field defects (HVFDs) are among the most common disorders that occur in brain damage, particularly after stroke. They lead to considerable disabilities, particularly with reading and visual exploration. A variety of different approaches, including optical aids and visual training techniques, have been examined for the rehabilitation of these HVFDs. Despite the considerable ingenuity that has been applied and anecdotal evidence that has accumulated, rigorously controlled trials that clearly establish efficacy of any method are lacking.

Speech and language therapy for dysarthria due to nonprogressive brain damage: a systematic Cochrane review.

BACKGROUND: Dysarthria is a common sequel of nonprogressive brain damage (typically stroke and traumatic brain damage). Impairment-based therapy and a wide variety of compensatory management strategies are undertaken by speech and language therapists with this patient population. OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of speech and language therapy interventions for adults with dysarthria following nonprogressive brain damage. DESIGN: Systematic review. SEARCH STRATEGY: This review has drawn on the search strategies developed for the following Cochrane Groups as a whole: Stroke, Injuries, and

The rehabilitation of limb apraxia: a study in left-brain-damaged patients.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of a rehabilitative training program for patients with limb apraxia. DESIGN: Randomized, controlled trial. SETTING: Neurologic rehabilitation unit of a university hospital. PATIENTS: Thirteen patients with acquired brain injury and limb apraxia (lasting more than 2 months) as a result of lesions involving the left cerebral hemisphere. Patients were assigned to a study group or to a control group following a randomization scheme. The study group underwent an experimental training for limb apraxia. The control group received conventional treatment for ap

The probable mechanisms of brain damage and epilepsy in febrile convulsions, Singapore syndrome and Reye's syndrome.

Current knowledge suggests integration of cerebral perfusion and metabolism as enabling normal neuronal function, and their pertubations explaining the brain damage of hypoxia, hypoglycaemia, hypoperfusion and status epilepticus. Similar mechanisms appear operative in the viral encephalopathies and cause psychomotor dysfunction and epilepsy. A transient inhibition of plasma membrane glucose transport is central to the understanding of the metabolic abnormalities of these encephalopathies, the ensuing cell energy crisis resulting from neuroglycopoenia being evidenced by electroencephalographic

Informative content of narrative discourse in right-brain-damaged right-handers.

Thirty-six right-brain-damaged (RBD) right-handers and 20 controls (C) were submitted to a narrative production task using the pictorial representation of a trivial story. Each subject's narrative was analyzed, using a "propositional analysis," in order to study amount as well as nature of informative content. Results show that RBD subjects' narratives contain a smaller amount of information that did not appear to be related to a smaller amount of verbal output or to the presence of a visual neglect, that the information contained in RBD subjects' narratives appears to be a subset of that cont

Imitating gestures. A quantitative approach to ideomotor apraxia.

The ability to carry out movements on imitation was assessed with a 24-item test in uniterally hemisphere-damaged patients. On the basis of a cutoff score derived from the performances of 100 control patients, 20% of the right brain-damaged patients were calssified as apraxic. Most right brain-damaged patients were only mildly defective, but a few showed a striking impairment. In left brain-damaged patients apraxia was not only more frequent, but also much more severe and was nearly always associated with aphasia. However, the correlation between the motor and the language disorder was not par
