A simple and reliable radioimmunoassay for the determination of 5-androstene-3 beta, 17 beta-diol in peripheral plasma and in breast cyst fluid, after a chromatography on Celite microcolumn has been described and evaluated. Proliferating trichilemmal tumors (PTTs) are benign adnexal skin neoplasms that arise from the outer root sheath of the hair follicle. These tumors are most commonly observed on the scalp and occur, most of the time, in elderly women. Malignant transformation of these neoplasms is a rare event; less than 50 cases have been reported in the English medical literature. In breast cyst fluid obtained from 50 patients age (47.1 +/- 2.3) sodium, potassium, oestrone (E1), oestradiol (E2) androgens, progesterone, (P) and Epidermal Growth Factor--EGF were determined. A matched pair analysis was done among patients with breast cancer, those with mammary cyst and those without any abnormality in mammary gland by ultrasonic echogram (U.S.) to investigate the relationship between dietary or smoking habit and mammary disease. AIMS: To describe a giant ulcerating fibroadenoma mimicking malignancy and highlight diagnostic uncertainty from discordant clinical, imaging, and biopsy findings.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 22-year-old woman presented with an approximately 10 cm fungating, ulcerated right-breast mass complicated by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection.
