Familial male breast cancer.

Infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the breast occurred in a total of six men from two families. In one family specimens from three men who had prophylactic mastectomies revealed focal intraductal hyperplasia, suggesting a familial tendency toward proliferation of mammary-duct epithelium. In the other family, benign and malignant breast lesions also developed in several women. Preliminary data suggest elevated urinary oestrogen excretion in three men from these families, implicating a defect in oestrogen production or metabolism in the pathogenesis of male breast neoplasms.

Breast carcinoma with positive results for melanoma marker (HMB-45). HMB-45 immunoreactivity in normal and neoplastic breast.

HMB-45 (melanocytic cell-specific monoclonal antibody) immunoreactivity has been detected by the immunoperoxidase technique in the cytoplasm of 2 of 100 breast carcinomas. In addition, normal breast lobules and ducts were occasionally found to have positive results in 6 of 100 cases. These findings indicate the need to exercise caution in the interpretation of HMB-45 immunoreactivity for immunohistochemical characterization of neoplasms.

Metastatic mucinous adenocarcinoma from breast mimicking a pyogenic granuloma in the gingiva: a case report.

Mucin-producing adenocarcinomas (MAC) are an extremely rare, indistinct group of neoplasm having either a salivary gland origin or with prominent glandular component. The diagnosis is chiefly based on the histological aspect conjoined with immunohistochemical evaluation as clinico-radiographical features are non-specific. It can arise as a primary metastasis to soft tissues, most commonly from either lung, breast, kidney, or colon. This paper reports a 51-year-old woman with buccolingual gingival swelling having a final diagnosis of metastatic mucinous adenocarcinoma from the breast. A tissue

Sebaceous lymphadenoma of salivary gland: a case report and a review of the literature.

The unusual case is described of a benign parotid gland neoplasm with intermingled sebaceous and lymphoid tissue, synchronous to breast cancer. In the past, the patient had undergone a simple surgical procedure for a cystic parotid gland lesion in that same gland. Secondary neoplasms have only occasionally been reported, since there are few cases for corroborating the strong correlation between salivary neoplasms and other carcinomas as in Muir-Torre syndrome; the previous cystic lesion showed the origin of the neoplasm from a sebaceous inclusion in the lymph node as a postulate of Warthin tum

Clinical characteristics and survival of breast cancer patients with extramammary malignancies in a single Asian center over the past 23 years.

BACKGROUND: The rise of multiple primary malignant neoplasms (MPMNs) necessitates exploration. MPMNs represent 18% of U.S. cancers. Breast cancer is the predominant malignancy among female Americans. However, most studies on breast cancer with MPMNs are confined to case reports with small sample sizes. Hence, this article scrutinizes 280 patients diagnosed with breast cancer and extramammary primary malignancies via long-term follow-up. METHODS: We reviewed 280 breast cancer cases with extramammary primary malignancies from January 2000 to December 2022 at our institute, excluding those diagn

Independent primary cutaneous and mammary apocrine carcinomas with neuroendocrine differentiation: Report of a case and literature review.

Cutaneous apocrine carcinomas share common features with their counterparts in the breast; hence, metastatic mammary carcinoma must be excluded before such lesions can be designated primary cutaneous neoplasms. Primary tumors from either source rarely exhibit neuroendocrine differentiation. We report a case of a 72-year-old female with a painless 1.2-cm scalp nodule. An incisional biopsy revealed dermal involvement by an invasive apocrine carcinoma juxtaposed to a benign apocrine cystic lesion. Immunohistochemically, the carcinoma expressed neuroendocrine proteins including synaptophysin, chro

Myeloid Sarcoma of the Breast as Blast Phase of JAK2-Mutated (Val617Phe Exon 14p) Essential Thrombocythemia: A Case Report and a Systematic Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a mass-forming proliferation of myeloid blasts. Frequently, it arises as blast phase of pre-existing myeloproliferative, myelodysplastic disorders or consequent to bone marrow transplant. Its molecular characterization has become an increasingly important requirement for the diagnostic definition of this solid leukemia. CASE PRESENTATION: Our case report concerns an MS arising in the breast of a woman with a previous diagnosis of JAK2-mutated essential thrombocythemia (Val617Phe exon 14p) mimicking, on histology, a lobular carcinoma of the breast. The imm

Leiomyosarcoma of the breast: a difficult diagnosis on fine-needle aspiration biopsy.

Leiomyosarcoma of the breast is rarely encountered in fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytologic material. We report a case of primary leiomyosarcoma of the breast in a 52-yr-old female. Aspiration cytology showed large, dissociated round to spindle cells with abundant vacuolated cytoplasm, pleomorphic nuclei, prominent nucleoli, and occasional intranuclear cytoplasmic invaginations. Mitotic figures, osteoclast-like giant cells, and stromal fragments were identified. A diagnosis of malignant neoplasm representing either a sarcoma, a poorly differentiated carcinoma, or a metaplastic carcinoma was m

Outcomes of sonography-based management of breast cysts.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound is commonly used during diagnosis of breast lesions. Our purpose was to study the role of sonography for risk stratification of malignancy in the diagnosis and management of palpable breast cysts. METHODS: This was a cohort study of 176 patients with palpable breast cysts. Sonographic findings were correlated with clinical and pathologic outcomes. RESULTS: Mean cyst size was 2.0 +/- 1.8 cm. Cysts were simple, complex and probably benign, and complex and suspicious for neoplasm in 82.25%, 10.25% and 7.5% of patients, respectively. Thick cyst wall (P = 0.0001), mural tum

Pheochromocytoma and primary hyperparathyroidism: a very rare association in a neurofibromatosis type 1 patient unmasked by Takotsubo syndrome.

SUMMARY: Neurofibromatosis type 1 is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by cutaneous, bone, and neurocognitive manifestations and an increased risk of neoplasms - more frequently cutaneous neurofibromas and optic gliomas and more rarely pheochromocytomas/paragangliomas, solitary parathyroid adenomas with primary hyperparathyroidism, and breast carcinomas. We present a case of a 48-year-old woman with an unexpected presentation of Takotsubo syndrome that culminated in a synchronous diagnosis of pheochromocytoma, primary hyperparathyroidism, and invasive breast carcinoma (pN2(R0)N1) in

Fine needle aspiration of secretory breast carcinoma resembling lactational changes. A case report.

BACKGROUND: The cytologic features of secretory breast carcinoma were first described as recently as 1986. Only one other report of fine needle aspiration (FNA) diagnosis of secretory breast carcinoma in a male has been published, in 1994. CASE: A 33-year-old male with a unilateral breast mass present for at least 10 years underwent FNA aspiration biopsy, excisional biopsy and mastectomy. FNA cytology findings demonstrated marked overlap with features described as characteristic of lactation changes. CONCLUSION: Secretory breast carcinoma is a rare, usually well differentiated neoplasm that

Lesions of the breast in children exclusive of typical fibroadenoma and gynecomastia. A clinicopathologic study of 113 cases.

This large series of cases demonstrates that the breast of the child or adolescent is the potential site for a number of interesting lesions exclusive of fibroadenoma and gynecomastia. Adenoma of the nipple, juvenile papillomatosis, and juvenile or cellular fibroadenoma should be correctly diagnosed to insure conservative surgical management and appropriate clinical follow-up. The results of the Juvenile Papillomatosis Registry suggest that this lesion is a morphological marker of potentially more serious breast disease in the future. Recognition of a cellular fibroepithelial neoplasm, especia

Multimodal Ultrasound Manifestations of a Central Intraductal Papilloma at the Nipple and Its Causes of Misdiagnosis: A Case Report.

Intraductal papillomas (IPs) are tumors arising from the ductal epithelial cells of the breast. Common symptoms associated with IPs include serous or serosanguineous nipple discharge and palpable masses. We present a case involving a 59-year-old female patient who experienced papillary lesions and nipple discharge for 20 years. Diagnostic imaging for this patient included mammography, conventional ultrasound, and contrast-enhanced ultrasound, which revealed an irregular and poorly defined mass at the right nipple. The ultrasound findings raised the possibility of Paget's disease of the breast,

Primary large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast: radiologic and pathologic findings.

Some breast neoplasms are classified as primary neuroendocrine carcinomas because they are positive for neuroendocrine markers. Although neuroendocrine carcinomas can originate from various organs of the body, primary neuroendocrine carcinomas of the breast are extremely rare. The diagnosis of primary neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast can only be made if nonmammary sites are confidently excluded or if an in situ component can be found. Here we report a primary large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNL) involving the left breast. Breast ultrasonography revealed a lobulated, heterogeneous, …

Complete Resolution of Paraneoplastic Membranous Nephropathy Following Curative Therapy of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.

A paraneoplastic syndrome, which includes glomerulopathy, is a manifestation of malignancy unexplained by direct tumor burden. Membranous nephropathy (MN) may be associated with malignancies that are primarily solid tumors of the lung, prostate and gastrointestinal tract. It is rarely associated with breast cancer. To our knowledge, we herein report the first case of MN associated with triple-negative carcinoma of the breast. The patient initially presented with MN as a paraneoplastic nephrotic syndrome. Treatment resulting in a complete pathological response of the breast cancer also resolved

Bilateral breast MALT lymphoma: a case report and review of the literature.

Breast lymphoma is a rare disease. Both primary and secondary breast involvement have been reported. Most primary breast lymphomas are high-grade malignant neoplasms, mainly large cell and Burkitt type. Low-grade lymphomas of the breast, particularly mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas, have been exceedingly rare. In this report we present a patient with bilateral breast involvement by MALT lymphoma. Our patient developed localized MALT lymphoma in both breasts in a sequential fashion. She was treated with bilateral lumpectomy, followed by radiation therapy to both breasts. The

Granular cell breast tumour mimicking infiltrating carcinoma.

Granular cell tumour (GCT) is a rare, usually benign neoplasm that can mimic carcinoma on breast imaging. GCT can originate anywhere in the body but is most frequently found in the head and neck region, particularly in the tongue. Of the reported cases, 6% have occurred in the breast, most commonly in the upper inner quadrant. We report a case of GCT of the breast presenting as a spiculated mass infiltrating the greater thoracic muscle on breast screening mammogram.

Orbital neoplasms in adults: clinical, radiologic, and pathologic review.

Orbital neoplasms in adults may be categorized on the basis of location and histologic type. Imaging features of these lesions often reflect their tissue composition. Cavernous malformations (also known as cavernous hemangiomas), although not true neoplasms, are the most common benign adult orbital tumor. They typically appear as a well-circumscribed, ovoid intraconal mass on cross-sectional images. Lymphoma, which may be primary or secondary to systemic disease, is the most prevalent orbital neoplasm in older adults (≥60 years of age). Choroidal melanoma is the most common primary adult ocula

Tumor-to-tumor metastasis: an unusual case of breast cancer metastatic to a solitary fibrous tumor.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm that most commonly involves the visceral or parietal pleura, but that has also been described arising from virtually all organs. This neoplasm exhibits rich vascularity, a characteristic it shares with renal cell carcinoma, making these tumors especially suitable for harboring metastases. We present a case of a 64-year-old woman with history of right breast cancer treated six years previously and who presents with a left pulmonary SFT containing metastatic invasive ductal breast carcinoma as well as a synchronous contralateral primary
