Association between polycystic ovarian syndrome and psychiatric morbidity in a rural setting: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine-metabolic condition affecting women in reproductive years. Women with PCOS often face psychiatric issues such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, negative body image, and eating disorders, which can worsen quality of life and pose treatment challenges. Despite its prevalence, psychiatric aspects are often overlooked. AIM: To assess depression, anxiety, stress, and quality of life in women with PCOS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: It is a cross-sectional study conducted for 18 months. The sample includes 102 patients who

Deficits in neurocognition, theory of mind, and social functioning in patients with schizophrenic disorders: are they related?

In schizophrenic disorders, impairments in social functioning, neurocognition, and theory of mind (ToM) are frequently reported but little is known about the relationships between them. The aim of this study is twofold: (a) to compare neurocognition, social-functioning, and ToM in patients and controls and (b) to investigate whether impairments in these domains are related to psychiatric symptoms. Participants were 16 outpatients with schizophrenic disorders (DSM-IV), and 16 healthy controls. We administered neuropsychological tests, ToM, social functioning, and psychopathology measures. Pharmacological augmentation strategies for schizophrenia patients with insufficient response to clozapine: a quantitative literature review.

BACKGROUND: When schizophrenia patients have insufficient response to clozapine, pharmacological augmentation is often applied. This meta-analysis summarizes available evidence on efficacy of pharmacological augmentation of clozapine treatment in schizophrenia spectrum disorder. METHODS: Only double-blind randomized controlled studies were included. Primary outcome measure was total symptom severity, and secondary outcome measures were subscores for positive and negative symptoms. Effect sizes were calculated from individual studies and combined to standardized mean differences (Hedges's g).

A pilot randomized trial of carbamazepine for behavioral symptoms in treatment-resistant outpatients with Alzheimer disease.

The authors performed a 6-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial of carbamazepine (400 mg/day) with 21 agitated subjects (16 completers) who had been treated unsuccessfully with antipsychotics. There was greater improvement for the carbamazepine group on the Clinical Global Impression of Change (P=0.055) and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) Hostility item (P=0.009), with a trend toward worsening on the BPRS Hallucination item (P=0.067). Overall, carbamazepine showed modest clinical benefit in these subjects, who had not responded to antipsychotics, an

Idazoxan, an alpha 2 antagonist, augments fluphenazine in schizophrenic patients: a pilot study.

Idazoxan, a selective alpha 2-adrenergic antagonist, was added to stable doses of fluphenazine treatment in six patients with schizophrenia who participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled pharmacologic study. Compared with fluphenazine alone, combining idazoxan (mean dose, 120 mg/day) with fluphenazine (mean dose, 28 mg/day) resulted in a significant decrease in Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale total symptoms (p < 0.05). Symptom ratings returned to baseline upon idazoxan discontinuation. No significant effects of idazoxan were observed on fluphenazine levels in plasma or on extrapyramidal

Response to electroconvulsive therapy in elderly patients with late-onset bipolar disorder: The impact of cerebral small vessel disease.

OBJECTIVES: Cerebral Small Vessel Disease (CSVD) is a chronic, progressive vascular disorder that confers increased vulnerability to psychiatric syndromes, including late-life mood disorders. In this study, we investigated the impact of CSVD on electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) outcomes in patients with late-onset bipolar disorder (BD). METHODS: A sample of 54 non-demented elderly patients (≥60 years) with late-onset BD and treatment-resistant major depression, mixed state, or catatonia who underwent bilateral ECT were included in this naturalistic observational study. A diagnosis of CSVD was e

Valproate in the treatment of acute mania. A placebo-controlled study.

We conducted a placebo-controlled, double-blind study of valproate, a drug originally developed as an antiepileptic, in 36 patients with acute manic episodes who had previously failed to respond to or to tolerate lithium carbonate. Treatment duration was 7 to 21 days, with no other psychotropic medications permitted except lorazepam up to 4 mg/d during the first 10 days of treatment. Serum valproate concentrations were measured three times weekly; an unblinded investigator then adjusted dosage to produce serum concentrations between 50 and 100 mg/L. Valproate proved superior to placebo in alle

Experiencing malevolent voices is associated with attentional dysfunction in psychotic patients.

Inattention in people with schizophrenia is common. However, there has been little research on the association between inattention and auditory hallucinations. The aim of the study was to investigate how inattention is affected by beliefs about voices as benevolent and malevolent and perceived control of voices. A total of 31 patients who experienced auditory hallucinations and who met the criteria for schizophrenia or other psychosis completed the attention subscale of the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS) and the Connors' Continuous Performance Test II (CCPT-II).
