Ectopic bronchogenic cyst arising from the parapharyngeal space is extremely rare and has only been reported once in a case report written in Chinese. Here, we reported one case with such a rare congenital abnormality. The patient accidentally found a mass in the parapharyngeal space when taking the head MRI scan. The CT scan showed a 2.6 × 1.9 cm low-density nodule with a well-defined border. The pathological exam confirmed its diagnosis of parapharyngeal bronchogenic cyst.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital anomalies arising from an abnormal budding of the primitive foregut or tracheobronchial tree. They are most commonly identified in the mediastinum though they can be found in the lung. Ectopic bronchogenic cysts are uncommon in clinical practice, and even rarer when located in the thyroid gland. We report here two cases of intrathyroidal bronchogenic cysts and discuss the patients' outcomes.

Bronchogenic cysts are considered rare airway anomalies that can have a significant impact on the well-being of infants. In this case report, we present a rare presentation of bronchogenic cyst presenting with early neonatal respiratory distress due to airway and vascular compression. Surgical excision was curative with an excellent prognosis.

The case is 61 years old, female. The mediastinal mass was pointed out at a medical examination, and she visited our hospital. A plain computed tomography (CT) scan showed a 12×35 mm mass in the anterior mediastinum, and a thymoma was suspected. Magnetic resonance imaging( MRI) showed low signal at T1-weighted image and high signal at T2-weighted image. A benign cystic mass such as a thymic cyst and a pericardial cyst was suspected, and thoracoscopic resection was performed. Pathologically, a bronchogenic cyst was diagnosed.

Bronchogenic cysts are commonly located in the middle mediastinal compartment as fluid-filled cysts and thymoma is one of the most common neoplasms in the anterior mediastinum in adult cases. For two cases of asymptomatic, incidentally discovered anterior mediastinal soft tissue mass in adults, we planned to perform complete thymectomy with minimally invasive techniques based on the guidelines of International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group. Their pathological finding revealed cystic lesions lined by ciliated epithelium and this supported the diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst rather than thymic…

We report a rare case of bronchogenic cyst associated with congenital complete absence of the pericardium. A 17-year-old male was admitted to the hospital for surgical resection of a growing cystic lesion located in the middle mediastinum. The patient was asymptomatic and no significant findings were found on physical examination. Resection of the mediastinal cyst was performed by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. The complete absence of the pericardium was immediately observed along with a cystic tumor arising from the mediastinum. After the resection of the cyst, no additional procedure …

Intracranial bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are uncommon, and BCs at the craniocervical junction are extremely rare. These lesions are most frequently encountered in the cervico-thoracic region of the spine. Their pathogenesis is still poorly understood. Regardless of the surgical approach, the aim of surgery should be total removal of the cyst and its content, whenever feasible. In this case report, a 50-year-old patient with a BC of the craniocervical junction is presented. The patient was operated on through a right-sided suboccipital retrosigmoid approach. The uniform layer of pseudostratified, …

A 66-year-old man presented with a retroperitoneal mass found in a routine medical examination. He had no complaints and no medical history. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a cystic mass in the retroperitoneal space, attached to the left crus of the diaphragm, 5.5 cm in size. Retroperitoneal cystic tumor was diagnosed, and transperitoneal tumor resection was performed. Pathological findings revealed a cyst wall lined with ciliated epithelium and cartilage, diagnosed as a retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst. The patient was in good health at 12 months after th…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to discuss the diagnosis and determine the optimal thoracoscopic surgical treatment of mediastinal bronchogenic cysts.
METHODS: From May 1996 to April 2008, 13 consecutive patients with mediastinal bronchogenic cysts underwent thoracoscopic surgery at our institution. There were eight men and five women aged 16-74 years (mean age, 41.5 years).
RESULTS: In the majority of patients (69.2%), there were no clinical symptoms and the lesions were found incidentally by chest radiography that was performed as part of physical screening. Lesions were found in the …

Cutaneous bronchogenic anomalies are rare. We report a 4-year-old boy who presented with a tumour and relapsing infection in the right scapular region. Histopathological examination of this tumour revealed a subcutaneous cystic legion formed by ciliated columnar epithelium with smooth muscle bundles and squamous epithelium with sebaceous glands.

OBJECTIVE: Bronchogenic cysts are uncommon congenital anomalies of foregut origin usually located within the mediastinum and the lung and rarely diagnosed in adults. Surgical excision is recommended to establish diagnosis based on histologic examination, alleviate symptoms if present, and prevent future complications. Thoracoscopic approach is becoming the primary therapeutic option.
METHODS: Between January 1995 and July 2008, 30 patients with mediastinal bronchogenic cyst (MBC) underwent thoracoscopic operation (19 male, 11 female with a mean age of 39 years, range 19-59 years). Symptoms we…

Congenital cysts of the neck are not uncommon. Most of these are thyroglossal, branchial cleft and thymic cysts. Bronchogenic cysts are uncommon developmental anomalies of the tracheobronchial tree and rarely occur in the neck. More than 70 cases of bronchogenic cysts in the head and neck region have been reported in the literature. We report three cases presenting with neck swelling in the hyoid region that were diagnosed as bronchogenic cysts based on clinical and histopathological findings.

Bronchogenic cysts are extremely rare in the tongue. We explain this localization by abnormal detachment of accessory lung buds from the primitive foregut. MR is the best imaging modality to evaluate lesions of tongue. Enucleation is the best treatment option. We present and discuss the case of a six month old infant presenting with a congenital tongue mass. This mass was a bronchogenic cyst.

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is a safe and minimally invasive diagnostic technique for the analysis of mediastinal lesions. This case report describes a patient who developed a life-threatening mediastinitis after EUS-FNA of a mediastinal lesion, which (based on computed tomography of the thorax) had been suspected to be a lymph-node metastasis, but proved to be a bronchogenic cyst.

Bronchogenic cysts in the interatrial septum are very rare. We experienced a case in which a 39-year-old man, incidentally diagnosed through echocardiography as having a cardiac tumor, was surgically treated. Pathologic investigation of the tumor, which was located in the interatrial septum and resected, revealed that the tumor was a bronchogenic benign cyst. Tumor enucleation was performed and the resultant atrial septal defect was closed by an autopericardial patch.
