BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Bupropion is generally considered safe and is widely used both as a monotherapy and as an augmentation agent for the treatment of major depression. Concerns have been raised about bupropion's propensity to precipitate new psychosis and worsen existing psychotic symptoms, although the mechanism is poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: A variety of abused drugs, including psychostimulants, can modulate the expression of anxiety. Although the effect of nicotine and D-amphetamine on anxiety-related behaviour in animal models has been investigated, the mechanisms underlying the anxiogenic or anxiolytic actions of these drugs have not been clarified.
