Pediatric burns are life-threatening injuries due to the acute injury and secondary complications. In acute-phase burns, hypovolemia and vasoconstriction cause renal impairment. Sepsis and multiorgan failure compound the problem resulting in morbidity and mortality. This paper outlines 5 years' experience using hemofiltration in major pediatric burns, and a review of the current literature. Retrospective patient data collection was undertaken identifying relevant pediatric burns undergoing Continuous Veno-Venous Hemofiltration. Data were analyzed to identify demographics, indication, duration …

BACKGROUND: Infections are a major problem in burns patients. Knowledge of the incidence and antimicrobial sensitivities of the microorganisms commonly encountered within each institution's burns unit is important as it informs and directs empiric antibiotic therapy.
METHODS: This was a retrospective review of patients admitted from 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2012 to an adult burns intensive care unit. Specimens chosen for analysis were wound swabs, blood cultures, venous catheter tips, tracheal aspirates, sputum, urine and wound tissue. Records were accessed from the admission register an…

BACKGROUND: In the days following a burn injury, major burn patients (MBP) present a multifactorial coagulation disorder known as acute burn-induced coagulopathy. Several studies have investigated coagulation in MBPs; however, Factor XIII (FXIII), which converts fibrin monomers into a stable clot and promotes wound healing, has not yet been studied.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the kinetics of FXIII and other coagulation factors and cofactors in MBPs in order to clarify coagulopathy in these patients and its potential relationship with surgical bleeding.
METHODS: Prospective observational pilot s

Differential diagnosis of agents of chemical burns can be challenging in neonates, especially in absence of a clear history of the event. A wide variety of chemical agents, from acids to basics, can be involved. Massive chemical burns over 21% of the body surface of a four-day-old male neonate were observed. At the physical examination, lower chest, abdomen, genital area and upper limbs showed full-thickness contact burns with a clear demarcation line of the skin breakdown related to necrosis of the subcutaneous layer. Head and fingers exhibited small hard brownish eschars. No clear history wa…

Mucormycosis is a relatively rare but dangerous infectious diseases. Burn patients, especially severe burn patients, are at high risk of mucormycosis. In recent years, the incidence of mucormycosis in burn patients has increased. At present, there are a few domestic literatures on mucormycosis in burns, with most being case reports without systematic summary. Based on the relevant literature at home and abroad in recent years, this article reviewed the epidemiological characteristics, clinical manifestations, diagnostic methods, and treatment methods of mucormycosis in burns, hoping to provide…

INTRODUCTION: Management of deep facial burns is a serious challenge for many reasons: a considerable anatomic and functional diversity is concentrated in a small space, a uniform treatment does not exist, late sequelae are frequent and may be severe, and the literature on the subject is ambiguous.
AIM: To analyse management of deep facial burns.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective medical chart review was conducted for 569 patients with deep facial burns hospitalized between January 2005 and January 2015. Demographic data, type, depth and size of burns, chronology and type of surgical tre…

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Eczema herpeticum (EH) is a disseminated viral infection occurring in pre-existing skin conditions and burns. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency, treatment, and outcome of EH in pediatric burn patients.
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in the pediatric surgery department, King Edward Medical University/ Mayo Hospital, Lahore, from October 2015 to July 2018 after ethical approval. All pediatric burn patients diagnosed with EH and not sensitive to Acyclovir or suffering from chemical burns were enrolled in the study. Diagnosis was c…

We have encountered many burn cases with lower extremity burn with adverse outcome. The study was a retrospective cohort study in 2 years, mean (SD) of follow up was 12(7) months. All demographic data, cause burn, time, total burn surface area (TBSA), presence lower extremity burn and its burn surface area (BSA), foot burn, delay in treatment, smoking, infection, morbidity, co-morbid diseases, length of stay (LOS), amputation, mortality, and outcome were gathered from patients' files. Statistical analysis was done with SPSS 21software. We had 14,215 burn patients, of them 995 were admitted acc

We present a case of a toxic reaction in both eyes caused by secretions from an encrusting anemone of the genus Protopalythoa. The patient presented with chemosis and follicular reaction of the conjunctiva and whitish spots on the limbus. Under local treatment with steroids and antibiotic eyedrops, remission was achieved within a few days. Palytoxin, a poisonous component of Protopalythoa secretions, leads to inhibition of the sodium-potassium-ATPase, to destabilization of the membrane potential and to cell death. Ocular exposure can lead to severe anatomical and functional impairments with sy

We report several cases of Meloidae-related blisters in French soldiers deployed to Mali. Blister beetles of the Meloidae family produce cantharidin, a blistering agent, for defensive purposes. These virtually cosmopolitan Coleoptera can cause significant nuisance to travellers and deployed soldiers especially during the rainy season in the Sahel region.

BACKGROUND: Hair bleaching is increasingly being carried out in hairdressing salons. The products used are a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and persulfates, both active chemical agents. Scalp burns secondary to hair bleaching are a traumatic adverse effect rarely discussed in publications that continue to be little known among healthcare professionals.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report the case of a 15-year-old girl with a plaque of scarring alopecia on the vertex. This lesion resulted from a deep burn following a hair-bleaching procedure. Healing took around 4 months, resulting in discomfort for…

Burns are a common cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in children. Thermal and chemical burns are the most common types of burns. Their clinical appearance can be similar and the treatment is largely similar. Thermal burns in children occur primarily after exposure to a hot surface or liquid, or contact with fire. Burns are typically classified based on the depth and total body surface area, and the severity and onset of the burn can also depend on the temperature and duration of contact. Chemical burns are caused by chemicals-most commonly acids and alkalis-that can damage the skin …

Burn injuries pose complex biopsychosocial challenges to recovery and improved comprehensive care. The physical and emotional sequelae of burns differ, depending on burn severity, individual resilience, and stage of development when they occur. Most burn survivors are resilient and recover, whereas some are more vulnerable and have complicated outcomes. Physical rehabilitation is affected by orthopedic, neurologic, and metabolic complications and disabilities. Psychiatric recovery is affected by pain, mental disorders, substance abuse, and burn stigmatization. Individual resilience, social sup…

Burn injury in diabetic patients has been a recent topic of interest in published studies. Previous studies have shown increased complications in diabetic patients compared with nondiabetic controls who have sustained these injuries. A paucity of research has been devoted to foot-specific diabetic burn injury. We present a case series evaluating the mechanisms and complications of diabetic foot burns.
