Long-read, high-coverage reference genome of the nymphalid butterfly Catonephele acontius (Nymphalidae: Biblidinae).

Catonephele acontius (Nymphalidae:Biblidinae:Epicalinii) is a butterfly species with a wide distribution across the Neotropics including the Amazon. Here, we present a long-read high-coverage reference genome for this species to serve as a genomic resource for future studies on Biblidinae butterflies, a group that is the subject of ongoing studies of seasonal adaptation under climate change. We used PacBio HiFi and IsoSeq reads to generate a highly contiguous and well-annotated reference genome. Five libraries were constructed, 4 using RNA from different tissues and 1 using high molecular weig

Remote Modification-Induced Butterfly Effect on Nonfullerene Acceptor Aggregation for Efficient Organic Solar Cells.

Organic solar cells (OSCs) possess unique advantages for next-generation photovoltaic applications, yet their power conversion efficiencies (PCE) are still constrained by substantial voltage losses. Simultaneously achieving high luminescence and charge transport properties of nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) remains a major challenge due to the complex, nonlinear relationship between molecular structure and solid-state packing. In this study, we demonstrate a molecular design concept based on the "butterfly effect" that enables precise control over intermolecular packing in A-DA'D-A-type NFAs thr

Diet quality improves survival and mediates larval response to densovirus infection in the Melissa blue butterfly.

Entomopathogenic viruses affect insect populations by reducing fitness and influencing other measures of performance such as development and longevity. Given the huge diversity of viruses, studies are needed to understand the mechanisms underlying how viruses affect their insect hosts. The Junonia coenia densovirus (JcDV) infects a wide range of Lepidoptera and can cause death in the larval and pupal stages. In this study, we used the Melissa blue butterfly (Lycaeides melissa: Lycaenidae) to describe infection progression at the individual level, the effects of infection on development, surviv

Biportal endoscopic en bloc removal of the ligamentum flavum for spinal stenosis: nuances for the "butterfly" technique.

The introduction of endoscopic spine surgery has led to a paradigm shift in the treatment of spinal disorders. In particular, biportal endoscopic surgery has gained traction for its wider visual field and improved the maneuverability of instruments, familiar anatomy, and costeffectiveness. In this study, we describe our en bloc removal of the ligamentum flavum using a "butterfly" technique. This approach had several advantages: (1) The flavum serves as a protective barrier for the dura during drilling. (2) There is less epidural bleeding, which provides (3) better visualization. (4) In an inad

The Effect of Silver Nanoparticles on the Digestive System, Gonad Morphology, and Physiology of Butterfly Splitfin (Ameca splendens).

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the morphology and enzymatic activity of butterfly splitfin (Ameca splendens). Individuals of both sexes, aged about five months, were exposed to AgNPs at concentrations of 0 (control group), 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 mg/dm3 for 42 days. On the last day of the experiment, the fish were euthanized, subjected to standard histological processing (anterior intestine, liver, and gonads), and analysed for digestive enzyme activity in the anterior intestine and oxidative stress markers in the liver. Fish in the AgNP 0.01 a

Exploring the Depth-Dependent Microviscosity inside a Micelle Using Butterfly-Motion-Based Fluorescent Probes.

The viscosity distribution of micellar interiors from the very center to the outer surface is dramatically varied, which has been distinguished in theoretical models, yet it remains highly challenging to quantify this issue experimentally. Herein, a series of fluorophore-substituted surfactants DPAC-Fn (n = 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15) are developed by functionalizing the different alkyl-trimethylammonium bromides with the butterfly motion-based viscosity sensor, N,N'-diphenyl-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine (DPAC). The immersion depth of DPAC units of DPAC-Fn in cetrimonium bromide (C16TAB) micel

Modified Matti-Russe technique using a "butterfly bone graft" for treatment of scaphoid non-union.

INTRODUCTION: Autologous bone grafts are used to treat scaphoid non-union with shortening and humpback deformity. The superiority of internally fixed bone graft to embedded bone graft has not been clearly proven. METHODS: Retrospectively analyzed 42 cases of scaphoid waist non-union treated using the "butterfly bone graft" (modified Matti-Russe technique). RESULTS: Complete healing was reached by all patients, with an average time of 4.4 (SD ± 0.7) months. Mayo Wrist Score improved from and QuickDASH score significantly improved in all patients after treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Butterfly bone g

Hematology and blood pH reference intervals for wild Spiny Butterfly Rays (Gymnura altavela) in the Canary Islands.

BACKGROUND: Despite the popularity of elasmobranchs in zoos and aquariums, data on hematological values for health monitoring remain limited, particularly for wild populations. In this study, reference intervals for key hematological parameters and blood pH were established from blood samples of 49 adult females of the Critically Endangered Spiny Butterfly Ray (Gymnura altavela) collected across three shallow beaches in the Canary Islands. Additional data were obtained from four adults maintained under human care. To our knowledge, this is the first report of hematological and blood pH referen

Surgical fixation of a unilateral bar and unsegmented butterfly vertebra in a patient with diastematomyelia and a tethered cord: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of literature to guide the surgical management of the simultaneous presentation of a diastematomyelia, two hemicords, and a unilateral bar unsegmented vertebra, a form of formation failure. OBSERVATIONS: An 11-year-old female presented with acute-onset back pain, urinary incontinence, and lower extremity numbness. Evaluation revealed T7 diastematomyelia with a tethered cord and a right-sided T6-11 nonsegmented unilateral bar, resulting in thoracolumbar levoscoliosis (maximal Cobb angle of 49°). Initial surgical decompression and spinal cord detethering were perf

Imaging the butterfly: A rare presentation of bilateral primary small lymphocytic lymphoma in the infratemporal fossa with incidental detection.

The infratemporal fossa is a deep anatomical space rarely involved in lymphoproliferative disorders. Small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL), a low-grade subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), is exceptionally rare in this region, with only a few cases reported in the literature. We report the first known case of a 48-year-old patient with a primary, bilateral, butterfly-shaped SLL of the infratemporal fossae, discovered incidentally during imaging after a road traffic accident. Clinical signs of infratemporal fossa involvement are often nonspecific or absent, particularly in indolent forms like SLL.

Assessment of skin safety and anti-pollution activity of Clitoria ternatea L. (butterfly pea) flower extract.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Clitoria ternatea L. (Fabaceae), commonly known as butterfly pea, has a well-established role in Ayurvedic and Southeast Asian traditional medicine. While its internal uses-for enhancing memory and reducing inflammation-are well documented, its external applications for treating skin irritations, wounds, and inflammation are less scientifically substantiated, despite historical use in India, Thailand, and Indonesia. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to evaluate the dermal safety and anti-pollution efficacy of Clitoria ternatea flower (CTF) extracts prepared vi

Triphenylene Diazocines: Butterfly-Type Rigid Photoswitches with Annulated Aromatic Ring Systems and Increased Switching Amplitude.

Azobenzenes are arguably the most frequently used photoswitches, but systems in which the benzene units are replaced by larger π systems are rare. Azonaphthalene is known, but the next higher homologue azoanthracene already undergoes irreversible intramolecular cycloaddition during photoisomerization. Such side reactions are not possible with rigid diazocines. In the present work, we have succeeded in integrating triphenylene groups into diazocines, making them the azo switches with the largest aromatic, annulated ring systems published to date. Both the unsubstituted system and several deriva
