Calcinosis cutis in juvenile dermatomyositis responsive to aluminum hydroxide treatment.

Calcinosis cutis is a frequent complication of juvenile dermatomyositis; however, its treatment remains unsatisfactory. We report a case of calcinosis cutis in juvenile dermatomyositis which was successfully treated with oral aluminum hydroxide. Almost complete clearing of calcinosis was observed after 8 months of therapy. There were no adverse effects from therapy. Aluminum hydroxide is worth trying in treating calcinosis cutis.

Calcinosis Cutis Universalis: A Review of Therapeutic Strategies and Surgical Management.

Background/Objectives: Calcinosis cutis universalis is a rare and severe manifestation of dystrophic calcification, most associated with connective tissue diseases such as dermatomyositis, systemic sclerosis, and systemic lupus erythematosus. It is characterized by widespread deposition of calcium salts throughout the soft tissues, leading to pain, recurrent infections, restricted mobility, and significant impairment in daily functioning and quality of life. Management remains challenging due to the absence of standardized treatment guidelines with risks including delayed wound healing and rec…

[Calcinosis cutis in a hemodialysis patient with Von Hippel-Lindau disease].

We report the case of a 52-year-old man with Von Hippel-Lindau disease who had been receiving nocturnal home hemodialysis for ten months following bilateral nephrectomy for multifocal clear cell renal carcinoma. He presented with a firm, painless subcutaneous nodule on the right anterior thigh, featuring a central crater filled with chalky-white material. Skin biopsy revealed dermal calcium deposits surrounded by a fibrous and histiocytic reaction, consistent with dystrophic calcinosis cutis. Additional nodules were palpable on the left calf and right biceps. Bilateral femur X-rays were normal…

It is associated with deficiency of early com … on revealed dense, massive calcified material in the subcutaneous tissue, confirming a diagnosis of calcinosis cutis. Surgical excision of the lesion was performed, and immunosuppressive agents were administered. However, one month later, the patient re-presented with a persistent infected wound that required antibiotic therapy. She subsequently received further m …

Intravenous treatment of calcinosis cutis with sodium thiosulfate - A case series.

Calcinosis cutis is defined as the deposition of calcium salts in the skin. The dystrophic form is the most common and usually occurs in chronic inflammatory processes associated with collagenoses. Therapeutic options include surgical excision as well as a few pharmacological treatments. Overall, the evidence for the known therapeutic interventions is very limited and there is a lack of valid recommendations. Intravenous sodium thiosulfate has been used successfully in the treatment of calciphylaxis. In our case series, five patients with dystrophic calcinosis cutis received intravenous sodium…

Idiopathic calcinosis cutis of the buttocks: A case report and review of the literature.

RATIONALE: Calcinosis cutis is a rare skin disease, and idiopathic cases are rarely reported. It is characterized by the deposition of insoluble calcium salts in the skin, subcutaneous tissue, superficial muscles, and tendon sheaths. However, no abnormal changes were found in the bone. In this article, we introduce a case of idiopathic calcinosis cutis of the buttocks with a long course and large lesion area. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 51-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital with a chief complaint of 'Due to the discovery of hard nodules with pruritus in the buttocks for 32 years. The …

Idiopathic calcinosis cutis in an infant: The importance of a wait-and-see approach.

A healthy 2-year-old girl presented with multiple asymptomatic subcutaneous nodules on both legs. Histologically demonstrated calcium deposition within the dermis and subcutaneous tissue consistent with calcinosis cutis. Laboratory abnormalities, underlying genetic conditions, and potential triggering factors were ruled out. The lesions resolved over an 18-month period without treatment, emphasizing the importance of the wait-and-see approach in idiopathic cases of calcinosis cutis.

Utilization of Ultrasonography in Dermatology: Two Case Reports of Calcinosis Cutis.

Development of newer generation of cost-effective ultrasonic devices in recent years has increased the use of ultrasonography in dermatology. Several lesions can be diagnosed and managed using ultrasonography. Calcinosis cutis involves the deposition of insoluble calcium salts in the cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues. On ultrasonography, it specifically presents as hyperechoic deposits with a posterior acoustic shadowing artifact due to the acoustic properties of calcium. A 62-year-old female patient presented with a solitary, skin-colored, palpable nodule on the inner side of the right lower…

Dystrophic calcinosis cutis in chronic venous disease of the lower limbs.

Lower limb ulcers secondary to chronic venous disease (CVD) are a significant public health problem in Brazil and account for about 70% of these ulcers. Despite recent technological advances and the various therapeutic options for treatment of these chronic injuries, several factors may be involved in resistance to treatment. Dystrophic calcinosis cutis (DCC) is a rare and often underdiagnosed condition that, when in conjunction with CVD, may be associated with a refractory healing process. In this article, we report a case of DCC in a patient with CVD and discuss its etiology, pathophysiology…

Bisphosphonates for the Treatment of Calcinosis Cutis-A Retrospective Single-Center Study.

(1) Background: Calcinosis cutis is a frequent symptom of autoimmune connective tissue diseases leading to pain, transcutaneous expulsion of calcified material and bacterial superinfection. There is a high need for new therapeutic options as no standardized treatment algorithm is established. While case reports indicate beneficial effects of bisphosphonates, standardized evaluation of treatment effects is missing. (2) Methods: In this retrospective analysis we evaluate the effects of intravenous pamidronate, a second-generation bisphosphonate, in seven patients with calcinosis cutis using cons…

Idiopathic calcinosis cutis of the scrotum: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal deposition of calcium in the skin or subcutaneous tissue is termed calcinosis cutis. Idiopathic calcinosis cutis of the scrotum is an uncommon entity. The pathogenesis of idiopathic calcinosis cutis of the scrotum is debatable. The condition presents as several brown to yellowish nodules on the scrotum, gradually progressive, and mostly asymptomatic. Here we report a case of idiopathic calcinosis cutis of the scrotum with a brief review of the literature and a discussion on pathogenesis. CASE PRESENTATION: A healthy looking, 50-year-old Nepali man presented with multiple …

Calcinosis cutis in a patient with eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome: case report.

Eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) often is a disabling disorder caused by the consumption of contaminated L-tryptophan. Affected patients present with an array of symptoms, including cutaneous manifestations, peripheral eosinophilia, myalgias, and long-term neurocognitive disability. This article is the first reported case of a patient with EMS who developed calcinosis cutis. While many long-term sequelae of EMS are reported in the literature, there are no reports of the development of dystrophic calcification in these patients. The calcinosis cutis in this patient with EMS may represent a n…
