Calcium channel blocker overdose mimicking an acute myocardial infarction.

A 42-year-old man presented with shortness of breath, weakness, and diaphoresis, and developed a new left bundle branch block while under evaluation in the Emergency Department. At emergency cardiac catheterization, he was found to have only insignificant coronary disease, and a hyperdynamic ventricle. Despite these findings, he subsequently developed profound bradycardia and hypotension, which were refractory to standard therapies including pressors, calcium, and transvenous pacing. He gradually improved over several days and made a full recovery, after which he admitted to taking multiple ca

Pregnancy following discontinuation of a calcium channel blocker in the male partner.

The fertility potential of human sperm populations can be assessed by the presence of head-directed mannose ligand receptors (mannose-specific lectin) and the occurrence of spontaneous acrosome reactions after incubation under capacitating conditions in vitro. We have reported previously on the interaction between anti-hypertensive medications and their effects on these parameters of male fertility potential. In this report we document the effects of cessation of calcium ion channel blocker medication on male fertility. Motile spermatozoa from a 30 year old infertile patient on a calcium ion c

Recurrent attacks of amaurosis fugax treated with calcium channel blocker.

Vasospasm may be one of the causes of amaurosis fugax. A patient is reported who daily experienced multiple brief episodes of amaurosis fugax. The absence of physical, laboratory, or radiographic evidence for thromboembolism, hemodynamic compromise, or vasculitis, suggested that the amaurosis might be caused by vasospasm. This hypothesis was supported by cessation of the attacks of amaurosis when the patient was treated with a calcium channel blocker.

Comparative Study of Metabolite Changes After Antihypertensive Therapy With Calcium Channel Blockers or Angiotensin Type 1 Receptor Blockers.

The high prevalence of hypertension contributes to an increased global burden of cardiovascular diseases. Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) and angiotensin type 1 receptor blockers (ARBs) are the most widely used antihypertensive drugs, and the effects of these drugs on serum metabolites remain unknown. Untargeted metabolomics has been proved to be a powerful approach for the detection of biomarkers and new compounds. In this study, we aimed to determine the changes in metabolites after single-drug therapy with a CCB or ARB in patients newly diagnosed with mild to moderate primary hypertension.

A comparison of hypotension and bradycardia following spinal anesthesia in patients on calcium channel blockers and β-blockers.

OBJECTIVES: Hypotension is a common complication of spinal anesthesia and is frequent in patients with hypertension. Antihypertensive agents decrease this effect by controlling blood pressure. There are conflicting reports on the continuation of antihypertensive drugs on the day of surgery in patients undergoing spinal anesthesia. Sudden hypotension could have detrimental effect on the organ systems. This study was undertaken to compare the variation in blood pressure in hypertensive patients on β-blockers and calcium channel blockers undergoing spinal anesthesia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninet

[Bone and calcium update; research of calcium metabolism on cardiovascular system update. Calcium channel blocker update].

Voltage-dependent calcium channels are divided into L type, T type, and N type. L type calcium channel blockers are widely used for treatment of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. However, recent experimental and clinical findings suggest that not only L type calcium channel but also T and N type calcium cannels are possibly involved in cardiovascular diseases, through activation of sympathetic nervous system or aldosterone release. Therefore, it is proposed that L type calcium channel blockade combined with T type or N type calcium channel blockade may have additive benefits in prevent

Combined Use of Angiotensin Receptor Blockers and Calcium Channel Blockers in High-risk Hypertensive Populations: An Observational Study.

This observational matched cohort study evaluated the combined use of angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) and calcium channel blockers (CCBs) in high-risk hypertensive patients to optimize treatment strategies. A total of 330 high-risk hypertensive patients treated between 2018 and 2024 were identified from the cardiovascular department database. Propensity score matching was applied to balance baseline characteristics, yielding three matched groups (n = 110 each): ARB monotherapy (valsartan 80 mg once daily), CCB monotherapy (amlodipine 5 mg once daily), and combination therapy (valsartan/am

Comparison of Rate Control Efficacy between beta-blockers and Calcium Channel Blockers in Patients Hospitalized with Atrial Fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent cardiac arrhythmia. Previous studies showed that rhythm and rate control strategies are associated with similar rates of mortality and serious morbidity. Beta blockers (BB) and calcium channel blockers (CCB) are commonly used and the selection between these two medications depends on personal preference. OBJECTIVES: To compare real-time capability of BB and CCB for the treatment of rapid AF and to estimate their efficacy in reducing hospitalization duration. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 306 patients hospitali

Heart rate outcomes with concomitant parenteral calcium channel blockers and beta blockers in rapid atrial fibrillation or flutter.

BACKGROUND: Patients who present with atrial fibrillation (AF) or flutter with rapid ventricular response (RVR) and hemodynamic stability may be managed with either an intravenous (IV) nondihydropyridine calcium channel blocker (CCB) or a beta-blocker (BB). Patients without improved heart rates may need to switch to, or add, a second AV nodal blocker. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the incidence of rate control achievement and bradycardia in patients in AF or atrial flutter with RVR who receive both an intravenous CCB and a BB. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients who received concomita

Diuretic or Beta-Blocker for Hypertensive Patients Already Receiving ACEI/ARB and Calcium Channel Blocker.

BACKGROUND: In patients already receiving combination of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI)/angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) and calcium channel blocker (CCB), whether the choice of additional diuretic or beta-blocker affects the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular outcomes remains unclear. METHODS: A total of 13,551 patients who were concurrently receiving three anti-hypertensive agents of different classes through outpatient clinics during 2004-2006 were identified from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan. Patients were further classified into two treatmen

Calcium Ion Channels: Roles in Infection and Sepsis Mechanisms of Calcium Channel Blocker Benefits in Immunocompromised Patients at Risk for Infection.

Immunosuppression may occur for a number of reasons related to an individual's frailty, debility, disease or from therapeutic iatrogenic intervention or misadventure. A large percentage of morbidity and mortality in immunodeficient populations is related to an inadequate response to infectious agents with slow response to antibiotics, enhancements of antibiotic resistance in populations, and markedly increased prevalence of acute inflammatory response, septic and infection related death. Given known relationships between intracellular calcium ion concentrations and cytotoxicity and cellular de

Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes With Verapamil Compared With Other Calcium Channel Blockers.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence that the calcium channel blocker (CCB) verapamil slows type 1 diabetes progression suggests possible preventive benefits among people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. We compared type 2 diabetes incidence between users of verapamil versus other CCBs in a population-based cohort. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: From a random sample of Australians in national subsidized health care databases, we identified 90,026 individuals who initiated treatment with a CCB (at least two supplies) between July 2003 and December 2014. Incident diabetes was captured by subsequent receipt

Calcium channel blockers' contribution to overcoming Current drug discovery challenges in Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive, irreversible, and multifactorial brain disorder that gradually and insidiously destroys individual's memory, thinking, and other cognitive abilities. AREAS COVERED: In this perspective, the authors examine the complex and multifactorial nature of Alzheimer's disease and believe that the best approach to develop new drugs is the MTDL strategy, which obviously faces several challenges. These challenges include identifying the key combination of targets and their suitability for coordinated actions, as well as developing an acceptable phar
