Delivering heart failure disease management in 3 tertiary care centers: key clinical components and venues of care.

BACKGROUND: Little data exist to assist to help those organizing and managing heart failure (HF) disease management (DM) programs. We aimed to describe the intensity of outpatient HF care (clinic visits and telephone calls) and medical and nonpharmacological interventions in the outpatient setting. METHODS: This was a prospective substudy of 130 patients enrolled in STARBRITE in HFDM programs at 3 centers. Follow-up occurred 10, 30, 60, 90, and 120 days after discharge. The number of clinic visits and calls made by HF cardiologists, nurse practitioners, and nurses were prospectively tracked.

Diphenhydramine and dimenhydrinate poisoning: an evidence-based consensus guideline for out-of-hospital management.

In 2003, there were 28,092 human exposures to diphenhydramine reported to poison centers in the US. A related drug, dimenhydrinate, is a less frequent cause of poisonings. Between January 2000 and June 2004, there were 2,534 reported dimenhydrinate ingestions in children less than 6 years of age. An evidence-based expert consensus process was used to create this guideline. Relevant articles were abstracted by a trained physician researcher. The first draft was created by the primary author. The entire panel discussed and refined the guideline before distribution to secondary reviewers for comm

Investigating woodpecker drumming using the center of percussion.

Woodpeckers are known for their distinctive drumming behavior used to forage for food and attract mates. During drumming, woodpeckers endure decelerations up to 1200 g without developing apparent brain injuries. Because of this extraordinary capability, woodpecker anatomy has served as an inspiration for structures that reduce forces during impacts, with potential applications in helmet design and vehicle safety. Previous studies theorized that impact energy from drumming is primarily absorbed by anatomical features in the woodpecker's head such as the tongue, hyoid bone, spongy bone, or lower

The Eastern Door Center: re-balancing the wheel-a Two-Eyed Seeing approach to FASD and other disorders related to transgenerational adversity.

In 2015, the Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) called for immediate action to address the lack of access to health services for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) in Indigenous communities. They called for the provision of culturally safe, community-based, FASD diagnostic, intervention and prevention services. FASD is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect all aspects of functioning. The term refers to a spectrum of conditions occurring as a result of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and associated risk factors. PAE can affect both physical and mental health leading

Understanding the Scale and Nature of Parent/Guardian Telephone Calls to a Tertiary Children's Cardiac Centre: A Service Evaluation.

Heart defects are the second most common congenital anomaly in babies born in the UK and standards state families should have access to a children's cardiac nurse specialist telephone advice service. However, there is little published information to describe the nature of calls and the workload associated with telephone support. We conducted a prospective service evaluation of telephone calls received at one UK specialist children's cardiac surgical center from parents/carers (April-June 2019). All inpatient cardiac teams (cardiology secretaries, inpatient cardiac wards, outpatient department

Post-marketing surveillance of methadone and buprenorphine in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: There have been recent increases in the use of methadone and buprenorphine in the United States. Methadone is increasingly being used for pain management, and buprenorphine use has expanded to include treatment for opioid addiction, leading to exposures of these drugs in new populations. There is a debate about the relative safety of these two drugs in routine outpatient medical use. METHODS: Data from the Researched Abuse, Diversion and Addiction-Related Surveillance (RADARS) System Programs were used to analyze rates of abuse, misuse, and diversion using the Drug Diversion, Ke

Asking for something different from our donors: factors influencing persuasion success.

BACKGROUND: Demand for plasma-derived products, and consequently plasmapheresis donors, continues to increase. This study aims to identify the factors that facilitate the persuasion success of conversations with whole blood (WB) donors to convert to plasmapheresis donation within a voluntary nonremunerated context. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Surveys were sent to WB donors after a plasmapheresis conversion conversation with a blood collection agency (BCA) staff member: in center (Sample 1) or via a call center (Sample 2). Participants reported the number of donor-initiated and BCA-initiated con

Plain language summary of a study testing a new drug (BI 764524) for diabetic macular ischemia.

What is this summary about? This paper describes the results of a clinical trial called HORNBILL that were published in a scientific journal called Ophthalmology Science. In HORNBILL, researchers looked at a new drug called BI 764524 in the treatment of diabetic macular ischemia (DMI). DMI is a condition that affects people living with diabetes. For people living with DMI, there is reduced blood flow in the center of the retina (an area at the back of the eye that changes light into signals to allow people to see). Reduced blood flow means that the retina does not function correctly and vision

Marijuana and acute health care contacts in Colorado.

Over 22 million Americans are current users of marijuana; half of US states allow medical marijuana, and several allow recreational marijuana. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact marijuana has on hospitalizations, emergency department (ED) visits, and regional poison center (RPC) calls in Colorado, a medical and recreational marijuana state. This is a retrospective review using Colorado Hospital Association hospitalizations and ED visits with marijuana-related billing codes, and RPC marijuana exposure calls. Legalization of marijuana in Colorado has been associated with an i

[Routes of care and health of children in Togo].

A character of child health in the tropics is that benign diseases elsewhere become serious and even mortal. Thus, in spite of considerable pediatric care in Togo, diarrhoea, malaria, anaemia, malnutrition, and acute respiratory illness remain prevalent and comprise a formidable "gang of 5" for pediatric pathology. The behaviour patterns of families and the population in general confronted by illnesses may in part be responsible for this situation. A survey was conducted over 3 months and based on a questionnaire given to parents bringing their children for consultation at the hospital (CHU) o

Characterization of edible marijuana product exposures reported to United States poison centers.

CONTEXT: Edible marijuana products are sold as brownies, cookies, and candies, which may be indistinguishable from counterparts without marijuana and are palatable to children and adults. The consumption of an entire product containing multiple dose-units may result in overdose. OBJECTIVE: To characterize edible marijuana exposures reported to US poison centers with subgroup analysis by age. METHODS: We analyzed single substance, human exposure calls coded to marijuana brownies, candies, cookies, beverages, or other foods reported to the National Poison Data System from January 2013 to Decem

From Invisibility to Equity: Redefining Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Through the Lens of Women's Unique Needs.

Women with spinal cord injury (SCI) experience persistent disparities in rehabilitation and healthcare access, particularly in reproductive health, sexual wellness, safety, and autonomy. Existing care models remain predominantly gender neutral and fail to address the full continuum of women's health needs. In response to these challenges, we propose a multifaceted rehabilitation framework that integrates an interdisciplinary approach to address the comprehensive needs of women living with SCI. Through the collaborative efforts of the SCI Model Systems (SCIMS) Women's Health Special Interest Gr
