Arthritis associated with Campylobacter jejuni enteritis.

Among 342 patients with infection due to Campylobacter fetus ss. jejuni, 8 cases (2.3%) of arthritis were found. Three patients had monoarthritis and 5 oligoor polyarthritis. The arthritis began 4 days - 4 weeks after the onset of diarrhoea; this interval and the synovial fluid findings suggest that the arthritis was reactive. The histocompatibility antigen HLA-B 27 was identified in 5 of the 7 patients tested.

Geographic clustering and population structures of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli in South and Southeast Asian poultry systems.

Poultry production is rapidly expanding across South and Southeast Asia to meet rising demand for human consumption. Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli are the leading causes of human bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide, with poultry serving as a primary reservoir posing significant risks to food safety and public health. This study investigated the genetic diversity of C. jejuni and C. coli isolates from chicken sampled in farms, along with markets (live bird markets and shops) and slaughtering facilities from Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Core-genome multilocus sequence …

The point mutation A1387G in the 16S rRNA gene confers aminoglycoside resistance in Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli.

Thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. are the most frequent cause of foodborne bacterial diarrhea and high-priority antibiotic-resistant pathogens, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Monitoring revealed current low prevalence of gentamicin resistance in European Campylobacter spp. isolates but substantial presence of gentamicin modifying genes circulating globally. Using a combined approach of natural transformation and whole-genome sequencing, we revealed a novel gentamicin resistance mechanism, namely the point mutation A1387G in the 16S rRNA gene, originally identified in a C. co…

Emergence of Fluoroquinolone-Resistant Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli among Australian Chickens in the Absence of Fluoroquinolone Use.

In a structured survey of all major chicken-meat producers in Australia, we investigated the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and genomic characteristics of Campylobacter jejuni (n = 108) and C. coli (n = 96) from cecal samples of chickens at slaughter (n = 200). The majority of the C. jejuni (63%) and C. coli (86.5%) samples were susceptible to all antimicrobials. Fluoroquinolone resistance was detected among both C. jejuni (14.8%) and C. coli (5.2%), although this only included three sequence types (STs) and one ST, respectively. Multidrug resistance among strains of C. jejuni (0.9%) and C. co…

Prevalence, virulence, and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli in white stork Ciconia ciconia in Poland.

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of white stork Ciconia ciconia as a potential reservoir of Campylobacter spp. Antimicrobial resistance and the presence of putative virulence genes of the isolates were also examined. A total of 398 white stork chicks sampled in Western Poland in habitats with high density of breeding were examined. Rectal swabs were collected during breeding season 2009-2012 from storks developing in a relatively pure environment (Odra meadows), in polluted areas (a copper mining-smelting complex), and in suburbs. Of the anal swabs collected, 7.6% were positiv…

Prevalence of Campylobacter species in adult Crohn's disease and the preferential colonization sites of Campylobacter species in the human intestine.

INTRODUCTION: Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are the two major forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). A high prevalence of Campylobacter concisus was previously detected in paediatric CD and adult UC. Currently, the prevalence of C. concisus in adult CD and the preferential colonization sites of Campylobacter species in the human intestine are unknown. In this study, we examined the prevalence of Campylobacter species in biopsies collected from multiple anatomic sites of adult patients with IBD and controls. METHODS: Three hundred and one biopsies collected from ileum, c…

Establishment of a non-human primate Campylobacter disease model for the pre-clinical evaluation of Campylobacter vaccine formulations.

Campylobacter jejuni is a common cause of enteritis worldwide. The mechanisms by which C. jejuni causes disease are unclear. Challenge studies in humans are currently considered unethical due to the possibility of severe complications, such as Guillain-Barré syndrome. Campylobacter infection in non-human primates closely mimics the disease and immune response, seen in humans. In this study, we attempted to determine the minimal dose of a pathogenic C. jejuni 81-176 strain required for clinical signs and symptoms of disease (> or = 80% attack rate) in Macaca mulatta monkeys using an escalating …

Myocarditis in a patient with salmonella and campylobacter enteritis.

Myocarditis associated with bacterial enteritis has only rarely been described and the pathogenesis is unclear. Herein we report a case where a young adult developed myocarditis during the acute stage of an infection with Salmonella heidelberg and Campylobacter jejunii/coli. The patient's troponin I value was elevated. We suggest that use of cardiac-sensitive troponins may be a useful tool for diagnosis of acute myocarditis in the context of bacterial enteritis. We also suggest the need for further investigation of the pathogenesis of myocarditis associated with enteric pathogens.

Risk factors for Campylobacter enteritis in Switzerland.

From February to December 1991, 167 sporadic cases of Campylobacter enteritis in Switzerland and 282 controls were enrolled in a case-control study using self-administered questionnaires. In the multivariate matched analysis, travel abroad was identified as the most important risk factor for an infection with Campylobacter (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 21.2, 95% confidence interval [CI]7.6-56.2). Having foreign citizenship also increased the risk (OR = 6.7, 95% CI 1.3-34.5). Among food items consumed within five days before onset of illness, consumption of poultry liver was shown to be a risk fa…

Report on an intrafamiliar outbreak of Campylobacter enteritis.

An intrafamiliar campylobacter enteritis outbreak is described. From stools of three adults and two children, 5 Campylobacter jejuni strains resistant to erythromycin, lincomycin, and tetracycline, were isolated. From the sixth member of the family, a boy, a susceptible strain was isolated. Serological responses, measured using a serum bactericidal assay, against autologous and heterologous campylobacters have shown that one strain only, the resistant one, caused the outbreak. The source of infection was unknown.

Campylobacter enteritis in infants and young children.

Campylobacter has recently been recognized as a common pathogen of the intestinal tract in pediatric practice. We report on 21 patients who were diagnosed as having enteritis due to Campylobacter jejuni infection. The most common symptom was diarrhea, accompanied by fever, vomiting and abdominal pain. The in vitro sensitivity test demonstrated the efficacy of aminoglycosides, chloramphenicol and erythromycin in the treatment of this disease. All the patients were symptom-free when discharged from the hospital.

Experimental infection of laying hens with Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter jejuni: Shedding dynamics and internal organ colonization.

Campylobacteriosis is considered the most common foodborne bacterial zoonosis worldwide. The species most frequently associated with enteric cases in humans is Campylobacter jejuni, followed by C. coli, and they can be transmitted through poultry meat. This study aimed to evaluate the dynamics of fecal shedding and the ability of these pathogens to colonize internal organs in laying hens using an experimental infection model. Two independent trials were conducted using sixteen-week-old laying hens, orally infected with 1 × 10 ³ CFU or 1 × 10 ¹ ⁰ CFU of C. jejuni or C. coli. Cloacal swabs were …

Campylobacter coli enteritis associated with Campylobacter fetus bacteremia, spondylodiscitis, and late CIED-related endocarditis, a case report.

Campylobacter sp. is widely considered a leading causative agent of bacterial food-borne gastrointestinal illness. Discitis and endocarditis caused by Campylobacter spp. are extremely rare. We describe the case of a 94-year-old man who was admitted for recent lumbar pain, diarrhea, and fever. C. fetus and C. coli were identified by MALDI-TOF from blood and stool samples respectively. MRI of the spine showed L5-S1 discitis. Patient was treated with 6 weeks of amoxicillin with clinical and microbiological response until cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) related endocarditis occurred f…

Antimicrobial susceptibilities of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli strains isolated from two early stages of poultry production.

Our aim was to monitor the resistance of Campylobacter isolates from two initial stages of broiler production in 5 grandparent breeder broiler farms (GPBFs) and 12 parent breeder broiler farms (PBFs) in which no antimicrobials were used during the study. Susceptibility tests were carried out for 805 strains (697 Campylobacter jejuni and 108 Campylobacter coli) against nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, amoxicillin, amoxicillin plus clavulanic acid, tetracycline, gentamicin, and chloramphenicol using the disk-diffusion method. Quinolone resistance was the most abundant overall (74.9%)…
