BACKGROUND: Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is a disruptive behavioral disorder; however, increasing evidence emphasizes irritable mood as a primary symptom of ODD.
OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether heterogeneous groups (classes) of individuals can be differentiated based on ODD sub-dimensions (irritability and defiance) or on overall ODD symptoms longitudinally. We also examine associations between ODD trajectory class and comorbid substance use (heavy episodic drinking, cannabis use), mental health (depression and anxiety) and behavioral symptoms (ADHD, aggression and substanc

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSACS) is an early-onset neurodegenerative disorder caused by mutations in the SACS gene. The disease, first described in Canadian families from Québec, is characterized by cerebellar ataxia, pyramidal tract involvement and peripheral neuropathy.
METHODS: Analysis of SACS gene allowed the identification of 14 patients with ARSACS from 13 unrelated Italian families. Clinical phenotype, gene mutations and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings were analysed.
RESULTS: We found 16 novel SACS gene mutations

OBJECTIVES: Maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), defined as negative events experienced before 18 years of age (e.g., physical abuse), have been linked to intergenerational impacts on children's physical health. However, research examining associations between maternal ACEs and preschool children's non-psychiatric neurological, respiratory, sensory, digestive, immune, renal, and hematologic conditions remains limited or non-existent, particularly in Canada. This novel Canadian study examined these associations in preschool-aged children.
STUDY DESIGN: This study used data from the l

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Tailored primary prophylaxis (TPP) is a reduced-intensity treatment program for hemophiliacs with the goal of preventing arthropathy. Our primary aim was to evaluate the joint outcomes of treated subjects using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and physical examination as outcome measures.
METHODS: Ankles, elbows and knees (index joints) of 24 subjects (median [range] age at start of therapy, 1.6 [1-2.5] years) with severe hemophilia A enrolled in the Canadian Hemophilia Primary Prophylaxis Study (CHPS) were examined by MRI at a median age of 8.8 years (range 6.2-11.5 ye

BACKGROUND: Early dietary introduction of highly allergenic foods has been associated with decreased risk of food allergy in high-risk infants.
OBJECTIVE: Early introduction of highly allergenic foods for lower risk infants was examined using Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) Study data.
METHODS: CHILD participants were recruited from the general population before birth. Every 6 months, caregivers reported food introduction and allergic reactions. At ages 1 and 3 years, sensitization to peanut, egg, and cow's milk was measured by skin prick testing (SPT) and atopic der

BACKGROUND: Diets are increasingly dominated by ultra-processed foods, which have been linked to several chronic diseases. Emerging evidence suggests an association between ultra-processed food consumption and inflammatory diseases, including multiple sclerosis (MS).
OBJECTIVE: To assess associations between consumption of ultra-processed foods and paediatric-onset MS (PoMS).
METHODS: We used data from the microbiome sub-study of the Canadian Pediatric Demyelinating Disease Network Study for PoMS cases (symptom onset aged <18 years) and unaffected controls. Data on consumption of ultra-proce

OBJECTIVE: Childhood sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) symptoms may comprise multiple phenotypes depending on craniofacial anatomy, tonsil and adenoid growth, body habitus, and rhinitis symptoms. The primary objective of this study is to identify and characterize the different SDB phenotypes to two years of age.
METHODS: Data from 770 infants in the Edmonton sub-cohort of the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Study (CHILD) were analyzed to identify SDB phenotypes based on age of onset and duration of symptoms. Parents completed the 22-item sleep-related breathing disorder (SRBD) scale. Chil

OBJECTIVE: Near-point of convergence (NPC) testing is an attractive screening tool in the sport setting because it is rapid, requires few resources, and is easy to administer. Remote NPC has been reported after sport-related concussion (SRC), although the incidence among a university-aged population is not well defined. The purpose of the study was to examine the incidence of remote NPC after SRC in a cohort of Canadian interuniversity athletes.
DESIGN: Cross-sequential.
SETTING: University.
PARTICIPANTS: One hundred thirty-two university athletes [SRC, n = 68; musculoskeletal (MSK) injury,

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pediatric concussion can disrupt functional brain network connectivity, but prospective longitudinal research is needed to clarify recovery and identify moderators of change. This study investigated network functional connectivity (FC) up to 6 months after pediatric concussion.
METHODS: This prospective longitudinal concurrent cohort observational study consecutively recruited children (aged 8 to 17 years) at 5 Canadian pediatric hospital emergency departments within 48 hours of sustaining a concussion or mild orthopaedic injury (OI). Children completed 3T MRI scann

Bullying is a form of interpersonal trauma that impacts all parties involved, including the youth who witness the bullying. Some bystanders choose to intervene and defend the child being bullied. Defending may be positively associated with psychosocial difficulties because youth are becoming more involved in a traumatic event, or because youth may be actively coping with the distress elicited from witnessing bullying; however, the link between defending and psychosocial difficulties has not yet been examined. The current study investigated the age-related differences and psychosocial difficult

OBJECTIVE: Prior studies have reported that major depressive episodes (MDEs) are associated with elevated mortality. However, the association has not always persisted after adjustment for other mortality risk factors. In our study, we examine this issue using data from a longitudinal Canadian study (the National Population Health Survey [NPHS]). The NPHS included a more comprehensive set of mortality determinants than prior studies, allowing a more comprehensive assessment of the effect of MDEs on mortality.
METHODS: The NPHS began data collection in 1994 and follow-up data were available to

BACKGROUND: In their early stages, serious mental illnesses (SMIs) are often indistinguishable from one another, suggesting that studying alterations in brain activity in a transdiagnostic fashion could help to understand the neurophysiological origins of different SMI. The purpose of this study was to examine brain activity in youth at varying stages of risk for SMI using functional magnetic resonance imaging tasks (fMRI) that engage brain systems believed to be affected.
METHODS: Two hundred and forty three participants at different stages of risk for SMI were recruited to the Canadian Psyc

Transitional Living Programs are popular interventions in Canada and the United States, for youth who are homeless or emerging from the foster care system. Some researchers have emphasized that an increased effectiveness of Transitional Living Programs is possible with an underlying philosophy such as Housing First or harm reduction. However, literature on the impact of these types of programs on homeless youth is limited. Given the lack of knowledge in this area, the aim of our longitudinal qualitative study was to understand the impact of a long-term transitional housing program, operating f

A growing body of research seeks to reveal the health effects of 'falling from grace' or 'rising from rags,' i.e., experiencing downward or upward mobility relative to one's family socioeconomic background. In this study, we mobilized a unique dataset, the 2012 Longitudinal and International Study of Adults linked to historical income data from the Canada Revenue Agency, to investigate associations between both educational and income mobility and self-rated health in a national sample of approximately 2500 women and 2300 men aged 25 to 50. Compared to educational immobility, extreme downward e

OBJECTIVES: In the Canadian context of universal health-care coverage, income inequalities are understudied as potentially predictive of the timings and patterns of repeat hospitalizations for diabetes, despite this condition requiring self-care practices entailing appreciable out-of-pocket expenses in daily life. In this study, we examined the relationships between income disparities and risk of earlier readmission for diabetes and commonly comorbid chronic conditions in the working-age population.
METHODS: The cohort study exploited 2006 population census data linked longitudinally to 3 yea

Neisseria meningitidis carriage data are necessary to inform serogroup B (NmB) immunization program implementation. This longitudinal study compared detection methods to measure N. meningitidis throat carriage prevalence in Quebec from November 2010 to December 2013 using cultured swab isolates and direct swab PCR from students in ninth grade (aged 13 to 15 years; n = 534) and eleventh grade/college entry (16 to 18 years; n = 363) and in university students in dormitories (18 to 25 years; n = 360) at 3 time points per group. Meningococcal and NmB carriage rates were lower in ninth- and elevent
