Testing a Sustainable Strategy Against Poultry Helminth Stages Developing in the Soil.

Free-ranging hens are at risk of infection by parasites characterized by certain stages that develop in the soil until attaining the infective phase. To analyze the usefulness of a biological control strategy of helminths affecting pasturing hens, fecal samples containing eggs of the helminths Ascaridia galli and Capillaria spp. were collected and then homogenized with an electric mixer. A total of 64 small areas were established by placing wooden frames (15 × 40 × 30 cm) on the ground and then adding approximately 100 g of a fecal mixture (per area). Four batches of 16 areas were considered: …

Gastroenteric parasite of wild Galliformes in the Italian Alps: implication for conservation management.

This study provides insights about the diversity, prevalence and distribution of alpine wild galliformes gastrointestinal parasite community, trying to fill a gap in the scientific information currently available in scientific literature. The analysis included three host species: 77 rock partridge (Alectoris graeca saxatilis), 83 black grouse (Tetrao tetrix tetrix) and 26 rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta helveticus) shot during the hunting seasons 2008-2015. Parasites isolated were Ascaridia compar, Capillaria caudinflata and cestodes. The rock ptarmigan was free from gastrointestinal parasites, w…

Molecular prevalence of zoonotic nematode parasite Calodium hepaticum in household rat population in Chennai city, India.

Calodium hepaticum (syn. Capillaria hepatica) is a zoonotic nematode parasite occurring commonly in the liver of rats, which act as primary reservoir hosts. In the present study, 55 household rats in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, were trapped and screened for C. hepaticum infection in the liver. All the collected rat liver samples were subjected to macroscopic examination. Rat liver samples with yellowish-white patch lesions were confirmed for the presence of bi-operculate and ellipsoidal shape eggs by parasitological and histopathological examination. A parasite-specific semi-nested PCR was dev…

Wildlife and parasitic infections: A One Health perspective in Greece.

While research on the parasitic fauna of wildlife in Greece is currently limited, conducted studies have provided valuable insights into the prevalence of parasitic infections in wild carnivores, omnivores, and herbivores. This review consolidates the existing data on the endoparasites detected in wild animals in Greece, specifically focusing on those that pose established or potential zoonotic risks. Over the last 60 years, various parasite species such as Leishmania infantum, Cryptosporidium spp., Toxoplasma gondii, Sarcocystis spp., Toxocara canis, Ancylostoma caninum, Capillaria spp., Bayl…

Gastrointestinal parasites of black grouse Lyrurus tetrix: A long-term study (1986-2019) in the French Alps.

This study investigates the gastroenteric parasites community of 336 black grouse Lyrurus tetrix, covering a wide part of the totality of the species range in the French Alps and characterized by a long-term sampling (1986-2019). Parasite community was described using common epidemiological descriptors. Additionally, for the most prevalent parasite, a species distribution model (SDM) was built to understand the main factors influencing parasite occurrence. Ascaridia compar, Capillaria caudinflata, cestodes (Raillietina urogalli, R.cesticillus, and Hymenolepis microps), Eimeria sp. (E. lyruri a…

An Overview of Fish-borne Nematodiases among Returned Travelers for Recent 25 Years- Unexpected Diseases Sometimes Far Away from the Origin.

Along with globalization of traveling and trading, fish-borne nematodiases seems to be increasing in number. However, apart from occasional and sporadic case reports or mini-reviews of particular diseases in particular countries, an overview of fish-borne nematodiasis among travelers have never been performed. In this review, we gathered fishborne nematodiasis among travelers for recent 25 years by an extensive global literature survey using appropriate keywords, e.g. travelers diseases, human infection, anisakiasis, gnathostomiasis, capillariasis, sushi, sashimi, ceviche, Gnathostoma, Pseudot…

Co-infections of the cestode Echinococcus vogeli and the nematode Calodium hepaticum in the hystricomorphic rodent Agouti paca from a forest reserve in Acre, Brazil.

The helminth fauna of Agouti paca (Linnaeus, 1766) has seldom been studied. In this paper, we report an unusual mixed infection of Echinococcus vogeli Rausch & Bernstein, 1972 and Calodium hepaticum (syn. Capillaria hepatica Bancroft, 1863) in free-ranging paca from a forested region in Acre (Brazil). Gross morphological examination revealed that paca liver contained multiple spherical to subspherical white or translucent lesions, which were isolated or frequently contiguous and partially covered by Glisson's capsule. Microscopic examination revealed unilocular cystic structures that contained…

Integrated Taxonomic Approaches to Gastrointestinal and Urinary Capillariid Nematodes from Wild and Domestic Mammals.

Fine nematodes of the family Capillariidae parasitize various organs and tissues in fish, amphibians, reptiles, avians, and mammals. Currently classified into more than 20 genera, these nematodes are primarily distinguished based on the caudal structures of male worms. Morphological and molecular analyses were conducted on 15 mammal-parasitic species belonging to the genera Aonchotheca (A. putorii, A. suzukii n. sp., A. suis n. comb. (syn. Capillaria suis), A. riukiuensis, and A. bilobata), Pearsonema (P. neoplica n. sp., P. feliscati, P. iharai n. sp., and P. toriii n. sp.), Liniscus (L. himi…
