Loeffler endocarditis is relatively under-recognized and can impose a diagnostic challenge. We present a case of Loeffler endocarditis where eosinophilia was associated with parasitosis. This case highlights the importance of clinical clues in a patient with restrictive cardiomyopathy, and appropriate ancillary testing which helps guide further management.

Many metabolic diseases result in pathological changes within the cardiovascular system, often with the most severe effects on the function of the heart and great vessels. Metabolic disorders affecting the heart include disorders of amino acid metabolism, storage diseases, neuromuscular diseases, diseases of metal and pigment metabolism, carnitine deficiency, and connective tissue disorders. Several inborn errors of metabolism may involve the myocardium due to the accumulation of abnormal metabolites in the myocardial cells. In addition, the heart valves and coronary vessels may be involved. I

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to describe the genetic and clinical characteristics of paediatric cardiomyopathy in a cohort of Chinese patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical history and mutation spectrum of 75 unrelated Chinese paediatric patients who were diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and referred to our hospital between January 2016 and December 2022.
RESULTS: Seventy-five children with cardiomyopathy were enrolled, including 32 (42.7%) boys and 43 (57.3%) girls. Dilated cardiomyopathy was the most prevalent cardiomyopathy (61.3%) in the patients, followed by hypertroph

Cardiomyopathies are a major cause of mortality and morbidity and this spectrum of disorders tops the list of diseases leading to cardiac transplantation. While significant gains have been made during the past decade clinically, knowledge of the molecular aspects of these disorders has taken longer to advance. During the past 5 years, however, molecular genetic information on a variety of primary cardiomyopathies, such as familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and X-linked dilated cardiomyopathy, has been obtained. Other primary and secondary myocardial diseases are now under study with advances

Survival outcomes of patients with heart failure (HF) based on their disease etiology are not well described. Here, we provide one-year mortality outcomes of 10850 patients with HF (mean age = 59.9 years, 31% women) in India. Ischemic heart disease (71.9%), dilated cardiomyopathy (17.3), rheumatic heart disease (5.4), non-rheumatic valvular heart disease (1.9), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (0.8), congenital heart disease (0.7), peri-partum cardiomyopathy (0.5), restrictive cardiomyopathy (0.4), and infective endocarditis (0.1) were the main disease etiologies. Mortality rate per 100-person year

Alcoholic cardiomyopathy is a consequence of toxic effects of ethyl alcohol. Acute effects must be distinguished from chronic effects over many years. Chronic abuse of alcohol of 1.5-2 g ethyl alcohol per kg body weight (i.e. about 100-150 g/70 kg) per day for years can cause congestive cardiomyopathy in predisposed persons, usually between 30 and 50 years of age. The diagnosis is associated with some criteria for exclusion, i.e. coronary heart disease, hypertension, valvular heart disease, in addition all obstructive and restrictive cardiomyopathy must be excluded. On the other hand, a specif

Pulmonary function data, including diffusing capacity, were evaluated in 56 patients with chronic severe cardiomyopathy before heart transplantation. Cardiac catheterization data were used to describe the relationship between cardiac and pulmonary function. Of 56 patients 44 had some abnormality in pulmonary function. The majority, 30 of 56, had a restrictive impairment alone. Of 28 patients in whom diffusing capacity was measured, 64% had a diffusion impairment. There was no association of pulmonary function impairment with type of cardiomyopathy or smoking history. Pulmonary capillary wedge

BACKGROUND: Although outcomes for pediatric cardiomyopathy (CMP) patients have improved, an understanding of outcomes by CMP phenotype is essential. This study assessed changes in waitlist and post-transplant survival in nondilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) patients over 2 decades, explored ventricular assist device (VAD) utilization in this cohort, and identified risk factors for waitlist and posttransplant mortality in the current era.
METHODS: Pediatric patients with a diagnosis of CMP listed for heart transplantation during three eras: Era 1: March 5, 1999 to December 31, 2004; Era 2: January

Tropical endomyocardial fibrosis is a common cause of restrictive cardiomyopathy worldwide, but is relatively rare in developed countries. We present a case of tropical endomyocardial fibrosis with right ventricular involvement initially mistaken as Ebstein's anomaly. We highlight the need for timely and accurate diagnosis to ensure appropriate management. (Level of Difficulty: Intermediate.).

In medical literature, few cases of Rasmussen's aneurysm have been reported until now, and to the best of our knowledge, there has been no description of a case of Rasmussen's aneurysm in childhood. The child described in the case report had a restrictive cardiomyopathy, complicated by pulmonary hypertension, in association with miliary tuberculosis.

A young patient with a severely elevated eosinophil count died from manifestations of severe eosinophilic endomyocardiopathy. Echocardiographic and hemodynamic evaluation were diagnostic of a rapidly progressive restrictive cardiomyopathy. Progression of cardiac disease in the face of medical treatment is an ominous sign and may argue for earlier surgical intervention in this syndrome.

The renin-angiotensin (RAS) pathway has an important role in the etiology of heart failure and given the importance of RAS as a therapeutic target in various cardiomyopathies, genetic polymorphisms in the RAS genes may modulate the risk and severity of disease in cardiomyopathy patients. In the present study, we examined the association of RAS pathway gene polymorphisms, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), angiotensinogen (AGT), and angiotensin receptor type 1 (AGTR1) with risk and disease severity in Asian Indian idiopathic cardiomyopathy patients. The case-control study was conducted in 400

Cardiomyopathies (ie, diseases of the heart muscle) are major causes of morbidity and mortality. A significant percentage of patients with cardiomyopathies have genetic-based, inheritable disease and, over the past 2 decades the genetic causes of these disorders have been increasingly discovered. The genes causing these disorders when they are mutated appear to encode proteins that frame a "final common pathway" for that specific disorder, but the specifics of the phenotype, including age of onset, severity, and outcome is variable for reasons not yet understood. The "final common pathways" fo

Eosinophilic myocarditis, a rare and under-recognized disease process, occurs due to cytotoxic inflammation of the endomyocardium that over time may lead to a restrictive cardiomyopathy. We report clinical, multimodality imaging, and pathologic findings in a 45-year-old woman over a 17-month period as she progressed from suspected acute eosinophilic myocarditis to phenotypic endomyocardial fibrosis resulting in recurrent ascites. Interval echocardiograms demonstrate definitive pathologic structural changes that reflect the hemodynamic consequences of the underlying cardiomyopathy. Despite a ne

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Although feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) occurs more commonly, dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM), arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) and cardiomyopathy - nonspecific phenotype (NCM; formerly unclassified cardiomyopathy) are all recognized in domestic cats.
PATIENT GROUP: Any adult domestic cat, of either sex and of any breed, can be affected.
DIAGNOSTICS: The non-HCM cardiomyopathies are rarely suspected in subclinically affected cats, so most are first identified when a cat

A 33-year-old male with idiopathic restrictive cardiomyopathy had dilated and tortuous veins over both lower limbs and over the scrotum with multiple hyperpigmented scars. He was in the habit of puncturing the veins to let out blood during episodes of worsening of dyspnoea, thereby relieving dyspnoea by decreasing the preload.

Endomyocardial fibrosis (EMF) is a poorly understood but common cause of heart failure in sub-Saharan Africa, which typically presents with a restrictive phenotype. We describe a previously unreported presentation of EMF with severe left ventricular dilatation and systolic dysfunction, mimicking dilated cardiomyopathy, in which longitudinal and multimodality imaging was crucial for the diagnosis.

Idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES), a systemic disease that commonly involves the heart leading to progressive endomyocardial fibrosis, frequently manifests as restrictive cardiomyopathy. In this report, we describe the first case of a patient with endomyocardial fibrosis due to HES who underwent orthotopic heart transplantation at our institution. A literature review and discussion are included.

An infant with hypotonia, gross cardiomegaly and heart failure is described. Angiocardiography revealed a hypertrophic restrictive cardiomyopathy. The diagnosis of type II glycogenosis was confirmed by the total absence of alpha-1,4-glucosidase in cultured skin fibroblasts. It is now possible to offer prenatal diagnosis by amniocentesis to women at risk of having affected children.
