Direct-Acting Antiviral Therapy for HCV Infection Is Associated With a Reduced Risk of Cardiovascular Disease Events.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Infection with hepatitis virus C (HCV) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. It is not clear whether treatment with direct-acting antiviral (DAA) agents affects risk of CVD. METHODS: We searched the Electronically Retrieved Cohort of HCV-Infected Veterans database for patients with chronic HCV infection (n = 242,680) and identified patients who had been treated with a pegylated interferon and ribavirin regimen (n = 4436) or a DAA-containing regimen (n = 12,667). Treated patients were matched for age, race, sex, and baseline values with

Cardiac remodelling identified by cardiovascular magnetic resonance in patients with hepatitis C infection and liver disease.

Chronic cardiac dysfunction in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) in the absence of alcohol consumption or other cardiac disease is well described. Whilst functional and morphological features of this condition remain unclear, diastolic dysfunction has been implicated by echocardiography. We aimed to evaluate myocardial structure, function and tissue composition with cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging in patients with hepatitis C and histological evidence of liver disease on biopsy. Contrast-enhanced CMR imaging for morphological, functional and tissue characterization was perform

A prospective cohort study of periodontal disease measures and cardiovascular disease markers in HIV-infected adults.

The determinants of HIV-associated cardiovascular disease (CVD) are not well understood. Periodontal disease (PD) has been linked to CVD but this connection has not been examined in HIV infection. We followed a cohort of HIV-infected adults to ascertain whether PD was associated with carotid artery intima media thickness (IMT) and brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD). We performed a longitudinal observational study of HIV-infected adults on HAART for <2 years with no known heart disease. PD was characterized clinically and microbiologically. Cardiovascular disease was assessed by IMT/F

Metabolic abnormalities and cardiovascular disease risk factors in adults with human immunodeficiency virus infection and lipodystrophy.

We evaluated metabolic and clinical features of 71 HIV-infected patients with lipodystrophy by comparing them with 213 healthy control subjects, matched for age and body mass index, from the Framingham Offspring Study. Thirty HIV-infected patients without fat redistribution were compared separately with 90 matched control subjects from the Framingham Offspring Study. Fasting glucose, insulin, and lipid levels; glucose and insulin response to standard oral glucose challenge; and anthropometric measurements were determined. HIV-infected patients with lipodystrophy demonstrated significantly incr

Cardiovascular manifestations and left ventricular functions in human immunodeficiency virus infection in infants and children in Thailand.

During January through December 1993, twelve symptomatic infants and children (6 females, 6 males) with human immunodeficiency virus infection were prospectively evaluated for their cardiovascular clinical manifestations and ventricular functions, using two-dimensional, M-mode and Doppler echocardiographic examination. From auscultation, the pulmonic component of the second heart sound was accentuated in 8 cases and the murmur of atrioventricula valve regurgitation and pericardial friction rub were audible in 7 and 6 patients, respectively. Cardiomegaly and venous congestion were present on ch

Rates of Infections, Malignancies, Cardiovascular Outcomes, and Death in Individuals with Hospital-treated Alopecia Areata: A Registry-based Cohort Study in Denmark.

The emergence of new systemic treatments for alopecia areata underscores the importance of estimating rates of potential treatment safety events among individuals with alopecia areata. In this population-based cohort study, data linked across Danish population-based registries were used to examine the rates of the following safety events of interest before approval of Janus kinase inhibitor treatments by the European Medicines Agency: serious infections, herpes zoster infections, malignancies, arterial and venous cardiovascular events, and all-cause death in an alopecia areata cohort, defined

Associations between soil-transmitted helminth infections and physical activity, physical fitness, and cardiovascular disease risk in primary schoolchildren from Gqeberha, South Africa.

BACKGROUND/AIM: School-aged children in low- and middle-income countries carry the highest burden of intestinal helminth infections, such as soil-transmitted helminths (STH). STH infections have been associated with negative consequences for child physical and cognitive development and wellbeing. With the epidemiological transition and rise in cardiovascular disease (CVD), studies have shown that helminth infections may influence glucose metabolism by preventing obesity. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the association of STH infections in schoolchildren from Gqeberha, focusing on

Emergence of daptomycin non-susceptible coagulase-negative Staphylococci in patients with cardiovascular device infections: Two cases report investigated by whole genome analysis.

RATIONALE: Daptomycin (DAP) is a key drug for treating severe Staphylococcus infections. The emergence of DAP non-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus has been widely recognized in clinical situations, although the clinical status of DAP non-susceptible coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) infections is unclear. We encountered 2 cases of cardiovascular device infections that were associated with DAP non-susceptible CoNS. PATIENT CONCERNS: The first case involved a 60-year-old woman with a pump pocket infection in a left ventricular assist device. DAP non-susceptible Staphylococcus capitis su

Potential role of the cardiovascular non-antibiotic (helper compound) amlodipine in the treatment of microbial infections: scope and hope for the future.

The appearance of multiresistant bacterial strains coupled with the globally ongoing problem of infectious diseases point to the imperative need for novel and affordable antimicrobial drugs. The antibacterial potential of cardiovascular non-antibiotics such as amlodipine (AML), dobutamine, lacidipine, nifedipine and oxyfedrine has been reported previously. Of these drugs, AML proved to have the most significant antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Time-kill curve studies indicate that this Ca(2+) channel blocker exhibits bactericidal activity against Listeri

Cytomegalovirus infection and HIV-1 disease progression in infants born to HIV-1-infected women. Pediatric Pulmonary and Cardiovascular Complications of Vertically Transmitted HIV Infection Study Group.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) has been implicated as a cofactor in the progression of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) disease. We assessed 440 infants (75 of whom were HIV-1-infected and 365 of whom were not) who had known CMV status and were born to HIV-1-infected women and who were followed prospectively. HIV-1 disease progression was defined as the presence of class C symptoms (according to the criteria of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC]) or CD4 counts of less than 750 cells per cubic millimeter by 1 year of age and less than 500 cells per cu

Development and external validation of a risk prediction score (DASHI) for cardiovascular events following acute respiratory infections: derivation and validation retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory infections increase the short-term risk of myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke in primary care patients. Clinical guidelines for acute respiratory infections in primary care do not consider the risk of cardiovascular events, and CVD risk prediction tools target long-term risk. We aimed to develop and validate a prediction tool for the risk of cardiovascular disease events within 28-days of acute respiratory infection. METHODS: The design was a retrospective cohort study using two different databases of routinely collected data from electronic health records fro
