Molecular community profiling reveals impacts of time, space, and disease status on the bacterial community associated with the Caribbean sponge Aplysina cauliformis.

Reports of marine sponge diseases have increased in recent years, but few etiologic agents have been identified. Aplysina red band syndrome (ARBS), a condition observed in the Caribbean sponge Aplysina cauliformis, is characterized by a rust-colored leading margin. Culture-independent methods (terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism and clone library analyses) were used to assess bacterial communities associated with healthy and ARBS-affected sponges from two locations over 2 years. Although the bacterial communities associated with healthy and ARBS-affected sponges were significantl

Course and outcome of psychosis in black Caribbean populations and other ethnic groups living in the UK: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: A higher incidence of psychosis has repeatedly been reported in black Caribbean populations in the UK. This has been attributed to a number of biological, psychological and sociocultural causes, including black Caribbean populations having a different illness course and outcome compared to other ethnic populations living in the UK. AIMS: A systematic review of UK-based quantitative studies, which compared at least two aspects of outcome in black Caribbean populations and other ethnic populations living in the UK, was conducted to assess whether the current body of research suggest

First Latin American position paper on the pharmacological treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disease that involves synovial joints, resulting in severe dysfunction or burden for individual patients, families and society. Latin American Rheumatology Associations have acknowledged its relevance and recognized multiple limitations for its diagnosis and treatment in Latin America and the Caribbean. This document underscores issues regarding the impact and relevance of this disease in these countries. OBJECTIVES: To develop a consensus document that may unify and guide the pharmacological management of RA in Latin A

Migration and schizophrenia: the challenges for European psychiatry and implications for the future.

BACKGROUND: The last decade of the twentieth century has seen an unprecedented increase in the number of reports in the psychiatric literature documenting increased rates of psychotic illness among migrants in a range of European countries. In countries where high rates of immigration have been long-standing such as Britain and the Netherlands, these increased rates have also been seen in the second generation of migrants. This has impacted on psychiatry significantly with regard to the aetiology, diagnosis, and treatment of schizophrenia. METHOD: We reviewed the literature to summarise the a

Neurological manifestations of Behçet's disease in a Caribbean population: clinical and imaging findings.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic relapsing multisystem disorder. While most frequently occurring around the Mediterranean and in Japan, isolated cases of BD have been reported in Africa south of the Sahara and in the Caribbean. The aim of this study was to describe our experience of BD in Guadeloupe (French West Indies) where the presence of the disease has not been reported previously. We analysed retrospectively the charts, and clinical and imaging features of patients native to Guadeloupe who were diagnosed with neurological manifestations of BD between 1989 and 1999. In our series of 13

Vitamin A deficiency in Latin America and the Caribbean: an overview.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) has been known to exist in Latin America and the Caribbean since the mid-1960s; however, except for pioneering work by the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama/Pan American Health Organization on sugar fortification in Central America, there was little interest in controlling it because of the low frequency of clinical findings. More recently, implications of the effect of subclinical VAD on child health and survival has generated increased interest in assessing the problem and a greater commitment to controlling it. The information available by mid-1

Mosquito-host blood-meal networks reveal potential arboviral bridge pathways in Colombian Caribbean mangroves.

Mosquito-host feeding networks shape the ecological routes through which arboviruses may move from enzootic cycles toward human-exposure compartments, yet these networks remain largely uncharacterized in Colombian Caribbean mangroves. We analyzed blood-fed female mosquitoes collected in La Balsa, San Bernardo del Viento (Córdoba, Colombia), between 2011 and 2014 to infer a molecular blood-meal-based interaction network. Of 496 blood-fed females from nine mosquito species, 437 amplified by CytB and/or COI PCR and 396 yielded high-quality sequences suitable for host identification, resolving 31

Geospatial heterogeneity in total mercury and methylmercury concentrations in the red lionfish Pterois volitans (Linnaeus, 1758) from the Colombian Caribbean.

Understanding mercury dynamics in invasive marine predators is essential for evaluating both ecological risks and human consumption safety. This study quantified total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in the muscle of red lionfish Pterois volitans (Linnaeus, 1758) collected from two sites in the Colombian Caribbean: Isla Fuerte (n = 38) and Santa Marta Bay (n = 22). Morphometric variables (total length and body mass) were recorded, and correlations with Hg concentrations were assessed. Mean THg levels were significantly higher in red lionfish from Santa Marta Bay (177.85 ±

Peripheral Immunological Signatures of Parkinsonism: Insights from the Caribbean vs. North America.

The contribution of the peripheral immune system to Parkinson's disease (PD) and Atypical parkinsonism (AP), including multiple system atrophy, progressive supranuclear palsy, and Caribbean atypical parkinsonism, is increasingly recognized, albeit incompletely resolved. Our study aimed to compare the peripheral immunological profile of PD and AP patients from two distinct geographical areas, Guadeloupe and Montreal. We conducted a cross-sectional study on PD and AP patients and healthy controls from Guadeloupe and Montreal (total 57 subjects). We collected clinical assessments and arbovirus se

Trophic redundancy within a diverse community of sympatric delphinids in the oligotrophic Caribbean Sea.

Understanding the trophic interactions of sympatric predators is essential to assess ecosystem structure, particularly in oligotrophic environments where resources are scarce. We examined the trophic structure of a diverse community of sympatric delphinids in the Lesser Antilles, in the eastern Caribbean Sea, using stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope analysis. Isotope data suggest the existence of three distinct isotopic clusters. Killer whales (Orcinus orca) and false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens) exhibited the highest δ15N and δ13C values, broad isotopic niches, and minim

Since 2011, the Caribbean region-including Martinique, Guadeloupe, and French Guiana-has experienced increasing invasions of Sargassum seaweed, leading to significant environmental, economic, and public health challenges. This study evaluates the health impacts of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and ammonia (NH₃) emissions from decomposing Sargassum on affected populations. Data were collected from 850 patients admitted to the University Hospital of Martinique between January 2018 and September 2024, all of whom had been exposed to Sargassum emissions for an average of 2-3 months annually. Reported sym

Disturbance intensification is altering the trait composition of Caribbean reefs, locking them into a low functioning state.

Anthropogenic climate change is intensifying natural disturbance regimes, which negatively affects some species, while benefiting others. This could alter the trait composition of ecological communities and influence resilience to disturbance. We investigated how the frequency and intensification of the regional storm regime (and likely other disturbances) is altering coral species composition and in turn resistance and recovery. We developed regional databases of coral cover and composition (3144 reef locations from 1970 to 2017) and of the path and strength of cyclonic storms in the region (

Genetic variability of the 16S rRNA gene of Nocardia brasiliensis, the most common causative agent of actinomycetoma in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Mycetoma is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2016. It is characterized by the progressive growth of nodules and granulomatous lesions on the legs, arms, and trunk. It is potentially disfiguring and causes disability or amputations in working-age people from marginalized areas. The causative agents can be fungi (eumycetoma) or actinobacteria (actinomycetoma), the latter being the most common in America and Asia. Nocardia brasiliensis is the most important causal agent of actinomycetoma in the Americas. Taxonomic problems have been reported wh

Promoting immunization equity in Latin America and the Caribbean: Case studies, lessons learned, and their implication for COVID-19 vaccine equity.

In 2020, the World Health Organization launched the Immunization Agenda 2030: A Global Strategy to Leave No One Behind, which prioritizes high equitable immunization coverage at the national level and in all districts. Achieving high and homogenous immunization coverage, which is all the more important within the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccine rollout, requires the strengthening of existing immunization activities and innovative approach to immunization promotion. This research applied a descriptive case study methodology to document the implementation of strategic multi-

Time to abandon the old dictum of delayed laparoscopic cholecystectomy after acute cholecystitis has settled in Caribbean practice.

Although laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold standard treatment for acute cholecystitis, many Caribbean surgeons are reluctant to operate during the acute attack. We collected data for all consecutive patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis from January 1 to 31 December 2018. Delayed cholecystectomy was done >6 weeks after acute cholecystitis settled. We compared data between early and delayed groups. Delayed laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed in 54 patients, and 42 had early laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Delayed surgery resulted in significantl
