Fishy odor is a critical factor affecting the sensory quality and consumer acceptance of aquatic products. However, systematic differences in the composition of fishy odor compounds between freshwater and marine fish remain unclear. To address this gap, this study elucidated the composition of fishy odor compounds in freshwater crucian carp (Carassius auratus) and marine yellowfin seabream (Acanthopagrus latus) through comprehensive analysis of their volatile compounds. The key fishy odorants were identified using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-

Understanding genetic diversity and population structure is essential for the sustainable management of freshwater fish, particularly in systems influenced by long-term stocking. In this context, the genetic status of Albanian common carp (Cyprinus carpio) remains poorly understood. Here, 125 individuals from five populations representing natural lakes (Ohrid and Shkodra), semi-managed freshwater systems (Prespa and Belshi), and a hatchery stock (Tapiza) were genotyped at 12 polymorphic microsatellite loci. High genetic diversity was detected across all populations, with low genetic differenti

Sustainable aquaculture of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella, GC) is consistently threatened by bacterial diseases, particularly those caused by Aeromonas veronii. A disease-resistant grass carp (DR-GC) has been developed by backcrossing female gynogenetic GC with normal male GC, exhibiting improved resistance. However, the systemic molecular mechanisms of DR-GC defending against Aeromonas veronii infection remain largely unexplored. Here, a label-free quantitative proteomics approach was employed to systematically compare proteomic profiles across five tissues (intestine, liver, muscle, ski

Thioredoxin (Trx) is a conserved redox regulatory protein that plays critical roles in maintaining cellular redox homeostasis and immune defense. However, its molecular characteristics and antiviral functions in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) remain largely unknown. In this study, thioredoxin 1 (trx1) was cloned and functionally characterized. The full-length trx1 cDNA was 834 bp, containing a 324 bp open reading frame encoding a 107-amino-acid protein with the conserved Cys-Gly-Pro-Cys (CGPC) redox-active motif. Phylogenetic and structural analyses demonstrated that Trx1 was highly cons

Grass carp is an important commercial fish in China that is plagued by various diseases, especially the hemorrhagic disease induced by grass carp reovirus (GCRV). Autophagy, a highly conserved biological process among eukaryotes, is pivotal in maintaining cellular homeostasis and managing various stressors, including viral infections. Uncoordinated (Unc) 51-like kinase 2 (ULK2) is considered an initiator of the autophagic process. In this study, we successfully cloned and isolated the ULK2 gene from grass carp. We observed that its expression levels were markedly altered following exposure to

NLRC3 belongs to the NOD-like receptor family and is recognized as a modulator of innate immune mechanisms. In this study, we firstly report that Ctenopharyngodon idelus NLRC3 (CiNLRC3) acts as a negative regulator in the antiviral immune response. Cinlrc3 is ubiquitously expressed across tested tissues, displaying particularly high expression in the intestine, spleen, gill and kidney. Notably, Cinlrc3 expression is markedly upregulated following grass carp reovirus (GCRV) infection both in vivo and in vitro. Functional assays reveal that the overexpression of CiNLRC3 hampers cellular antivira

INTRODUCTION: Galectin-9 is a β-galactoside-binding lectin that functions as a critical pattern recognition receptor (PRR) in the host immune system, initiating immune defense responses by recognizing and binding to pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) on the surface of microorganisms. In this study, we identified and characterized a novel galectin-9 cDNA, designated CcGal-9, from Yellow River carp (Cyprinus carpio haematopterus).
METHODS: The full-length CcGal-9 cDNA was cloned and sequenced, and its structural features were analyzed. Tissue distribution of CcGal-9 mRNA was examine

Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) is an economically important fish species that holds a central position in freshwater aquaculture in China, and its primary disease, grass carp hemorrhagic disease (GCHD), is caused by Grass Carp Reovirus (GCRV) infection. GCHD poses serious threats to aquaculture, but traditional prevention and control methods are limited. Currently, the primary measures for preventing and controlling the disease include vaccination and cultivating disease-resistant varieties. Breeding resistant varieties is an effective strategy to improve grass carp's disease resistance.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) contamination poses a significant environmental threat due to its widespread distribution and persistence. However, the hepatotoxic effects of PFOS on key aquatic species, such as crucian carp, remain understudied. This study systematically investigated the hepatotoxicity and underlying molecular mechanisms associated with PFOS exposure in crucian carp over a 21 day period. We determined a 96 h 50% lethal concentration (LC50) of 23.17 mg/L. Histopathological and transcriptomic analyses confirmed PFOS-induced liver damage in the carp, characterized by venous con

Pesticides are recognized as prominent toxicants in aqueous ecosystems, which frequently impact aquatic life. The pyrethroid insecticide lambda-cyhalothrin (LDC) and the triazole fungicide difenoconazole (DFC) are frequently co-detected in many water sources. However, the joint harmful effects of these chemicals on fish are still poorly understood. In this study, a 30-day co-exposure experiment was conducted using LDC and DFC on the hook snout carp (Opsariichthys bidens) to assess their toxic impacts on hepatic tissues. Biochemical assays demonstrated a significant increase in catalase (CAT) a

Microcystin-LR (MC-LR), a cyclic heptapeptide produced by freshwater cyanobacteria, induces a range of liver injuries. However, the mechanisms underlying MC-LR toxicity in primary hepatocytes of aquatic organisms remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of MC-LR on oxidative stress and mitochondrial function using primarily cultured grass carp hepatocytes. The results revealed that IC50 of MC-LR on grass carp primary liver cells for 24 hours was 2.40 μmol/L. Based on 24h-IC50, concentrations of 0, 0.30, 0.60, and 1.20 μmol/L were used in subsequent experiments. MC-

The antiepileptic drug carbamazepine (CBZ) has been widely detected in freshwater, yet its toxic actions in fish at multiple endpoints and the subsequent recovery patterns of the impacted are less discussed. This study investigated the bioaccumulation, physiological and behavioral changes of crucian carp (Carassius carassius) following CBZ exposure (G1 = 6.15 μg/L, G2 = 61.5 μg/L, G3 = 615 μg/L, G4 = 6150 μg/L) and subsequent recovery. Our results showed that CBZ was more likely to accumulate in the liver and brain than in the gills. A concentration-dependent phenomenon was observed; however,

Gasdermin E (GSDME), to date, is considered the only direct executor of the pyroptosis process in teleost and plays an important role in innate immunity. In common carp (Cyprinus carpio), there contains two pairs of GSDME (GSDMEa/a-like and GSDMEb-1/2), and the pyroptotic function and regulation mechanism of GSDME still remain unclear. In this study, we identified two GSDMEb genes of common carp (CcGSDMEb-1/2), which contain a conserved N-terminal pore-forming domain, C-terminal autoinhibitory domain, and a flexible and pliable hinge region. We investigated the function and mechanism of CcGSDM

Chlorpyrifos (CPF) and glyphosate (GLY) are the most widely used organophosphate insecticide and herbicide worldwide, respectively; co-occurrence of CPF and GLY in aquatic environments occurs where they inevitably have potential hazards to fish. However, the potential mechanisms of CPF and GLY to induce toxicity have not been fully explored. To identify the adverse impacts of CPF and GLY on fish, either alone or in combination (MIX), CPF (25 μg/L) and GLY (3.5 mg/L) were set up according to an environmentally relevant concentration to expose to common carp for 21 days. After exposure, CPF and

Currently, aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems are continuously and chronically polluted by cocktails of countless chemical compounds. The susceptibility to infections is tremendously increasing in a variety of organisms due to exposure to environmental pollutants. Pendimethalin, an herbicide, is continuously used in agriculture to remove unwanted broadleaf weeds across the globe. Therefore, this study investigates the mechanisms of toxicity of pendimethalin in freshwater fish bighead carp upon exposure to low and environmentally relevant concentrations. For this purpose, 48 fish without any cl

In this study, we genetically characterised Monogenea found on common carp in Iran. In total, 5603 parasites were recovered from 112 fish. The parasites were first identified morphologically as Dactylogyrus extensus, D. anchoratus, D. vastator, D. minutus, D. achmerowi and Gyrodactylus sprostonae. Representative samples were then subjected to sequencing. This is one of the first studies which has provided both morphological and sequence data for Dactylogyrus spp. and G. sprostonae. Our findings provide a foundation for future research into the genetic make-up of these economically significant

The pharmacokinetic (PK) properties of enrofloxacin (ENR) and its metabolite ciprofloxacin (CIP) were investigated in crucian carp following oral administration at different dose levels (5, 10, 20, 40 mg/kg body weight). The disposition kinetics of ENR was found to be linear over the dose range studied. Serum half-lives ranged from 64.56 to 72.68 hr. The in vitro and ex vivo activities of ENR in serum against a pathogenic strain of Aeromonas hydrophila were determined. In vitro and ex vivo bactericidal activity of ENR was concentration dependent. Dosing of 10 mg/kg resulted in an AUC/minimum i

Florfenicol, a synthetic drug with chemical structure and spectrum of antibacterial activity similar to chloramphenicol, has been shown to be effective against a number of bacterial pathogens. However, there are increasing signs of florfenicol-resistant bacteria due to the misuse and overuse of florfenicol in aquaculture. In the present study, florfenicol had a higher bactericidal efficacy in the presence of myo-inositol, which may be due to the ability of myo-inositol to increase susceptibility of Aeromonas hydrophila to florfenicol. Furthermore, in two different infected models, co-administr

Different types of metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have been suggested for various applications such as water treatment and construction of agricultural pesticides; however, there are concerns about the potential toxicity of these compounds for the nontarget organism especially aquatic organisms. The aims of this study were assessing toxicity and histopathological effects of copper oxide NPs (NPs-CuO) on common carp (Cyprinus carpio) as a model organism. For this purpose 150 common carp with an average weight 7 ± 1 g were exposed to 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, 80, 100, 150, and 200 mg/l of CuO-NPs
