BACKGROUND: Chondrocytes respond to biomechanical and bioelectrochemical stimuli by secreting appropriate extracellular matrix proteins that enable the tissue to withstand the large forces it experiences. Although biomechanical aspects of cartilage are well described, little is known of the bioelectrochemical responses. Type XI collagen (CXI) and cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) are minor components in cartilage, shown to be arthritogenic. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review of the author's nasal surgery experience for an 8-year period.

Subchondral hematomas have been found with arthroscopy in one third of patients with dislocated distal radial fractures. The aim of the present, prospective study was to determine whether these hematomas might cause radiographic osteoarthrosis. We studied 41 patients (age 20-57 years, 22 women) with a dislocated distal radial fracture. Fresh and frozen cartilage allografts both function well to relieve joint pain due to cartilage injury. Fresh cartilage allografts appear to remain alive for many months and are most applicable to small injuries such as osteochondritis dissecans, traumatic defects, and osteonecrosis. A total of 307 breast neoplasms and tumour-like conditions were reviewed to assess the frequency with which bone and/or cartilage occurred. Of 90 fibroadenomas, 1 (1.1%) and 2 of 158 breast carcinomas (1.3%) contained bone, one benign mesenchymoma contained cartilage, and one benign "mixed" tumour (pleomorphic adenoma) displayed cartilage and bone. Twenty-two papillomas and 34 cases of gynaecomastia did not contain any cartilage or bone.
