The Authors describe chronic vaginitis of bovines in intensive breeding. All of the 78 subjects examined presented vaginitis, accompanied by fibrinous hydrocele. On the spermatic cord and the tail of epididymis, initial lesions consisted of granulomas and fibrinous bridges between vaginalis propria of testicle and of epididymis. Subsequently appeared adherence and synechiae, which join the deferens and epididymis body to didymis, and thickening of albuginea. Absolute and relative ages of incisor and canine eruption were recorded in 152 Holstein-Friesian and 154 Limousine X Hungarian Fleckvieh cows kept under commercial circumstances. While significant difference was found only between the emergence of the first incisor relative to the canine, a broader comparison of several breeds as published by a variety of authors put the findings within the right context. In experimental trials on cattle, ivermectin given SC at 200 micrograms/kg had 95% or better efficacy against adult and immature GI and pulmonary nematodes, including inhibited fourth-stage larvae of Ostertagia ostertagi. Studies of efficacy against ectoparasites revealed nearly 100% efficacy against sucking lice, psoroptic and sarcoptic mange mites and cattle grubs. Safety trials revealed no adverse effects with the recommended dosage, including bulls and pregnant cows. A few grub-infested cattle died from acute esophagitis associated with a host-parasite reaction after ivermectin injection.

Saskatoon serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia) twigs were administered to cattle in feed rations and by intraruminal dosing to determine the toxicity of the cyanogenic shrub. When chopped twigs were fed as 75% of the diet, cattle exhibited restlessness, shivering, loss of weight, scours and shortness of breath. Between 1967 and 1977 a study was made of diseases of cattle in the Solomon Islands. Tuberculosis was found in only 3 herds and was eradicated by 1975. Brucellosis serology revealed very few reactors and by 1977 the herds involved were considered free of the disease. Significant serological reactions were found to Leptospira interrogans serovars pomona, hardjo, autumnalis and jez-bratislava. Myopathy and myoglobinuria occurred in a group of feedlot cattle in Alberta following transportation. The condition was associated with a deficiency of selenium (Se) in grain and hay fed to these animals on their premises of origin. Clinical findings in affected animals were characterized by a normal body temperature, stiffness, sternal recumbency and the passage of red or coffee-colored urine. Treatment with injectable Se-vitamin E was followed by the recovery of most affected animals within two weeks.
